and a wonderful aroma to wedding
ceremonies and receptions, there are
other reasons behind their inclusion
in such festivities.
In ancient Rome,
brides carried or
wore flower gar-
lands because the
Romans believed
flowers signified
hope, fertility and
new beginnings. In
the Middle Ages, brides did not carry
flowers, but rather strong-smelling
spices and herbs. The rationale was
that the herbs and spices would
drive away bad luck and evil spirits.
Flowers also served another practi-
cal purpose. In eras when bathing
was a luxury, different flowers and
herbs helped mask body odors. It
wasn’t until the Victorian era, when
flowers were used to symbolize
romantic love, that they became part
of wedding ceremonies, according to
Modern Weddings magazine.
The phrase “tying the knot” is
synonymous with getting married.
Although the words can represent
the symbolic joining of two lives
together, in some cultures, getting
married actually requires tying a knot.
The custom traces its origins to an
ancient Babylonian tradition in which
threads from the clothes of both the
bride and groom were tied in a knot
to represent the couple’s union. Other
cultures have embraced this tradition,
and couples tie ceremonial knots dur-
ing their wedding ceremonies.
Diamond engagement rings are
presented as tokens of love and
affection during wedding proposals.
The majority of first-time brides will
receive a diamond ring, with surveys
indicating only 13 percent opt for
another gemstone. Researchers from
Emory University determined that
the average price for a diamond ring
is roughly $2,500. However, grooms
can spend much more. Diamonds
have symbolized eternal love for
centuries, perhaps since they were
first discovered in India more than
2,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks
actually thought diamonds were tears
of the gods, while ancient Romans
believed diamonds were splinters
from heavenly stars.

Representatives from both families,

Airbrush makeup is comprised of a
very thin liquid makeup that is applied
with the use of an air gun. This pro-
duces a thin, even layer of foundation,
often creating a matte finish. Makeup
artists can custom-blend shades to get
the right match for their customers’
skin tones. And because the fine mist of
airbrush makeup enables true skin tone
to show through, it can appear much
more natural.
Many airbrushed formulations are
silicone-based, enabling long-lasting
wear and water-resistant properties.
This is advantageous when hugging and
kissing on one’s wedding day.
Some airbrush makeup can last up to
16 hours.
Some airbrush formulations are wa-
ter- or alcohol-based. Alcohol-based
options can be used to cover tattoos or
birthmarks.
Touchups are minimal with airbrush
makeup, and the formulations can be
layered to cover blemishes. Airbrush
makeup also creates a pristine finish for
applying other makeup.
Airbrush makeup is compatible with
well-moisturized skin and takes to it
well, but dry skin may flake, crack and
look flat, advises Essence Designs.

joy on their wedding days might find

be closer to the bride and groom and
further away from distractions.
• Seat immediate family members
closest to the bride and groom. Guests
who fall under the acquaintance cate-
gory as opposed to the family category
can be seated farther away.
• Place friends or party animals near
the entertainment. Guests who are
up for a good party may appreciate
being seated close to the dance floor
or within arm’s length of the refresh-
ments.
• Address mobility concerns. If a
guest is elderly or needs to be close
to exits or the restroom, make those
accommodations.
• Embrace the kids’ table. Seat
young guests together if there are a
number of them. Kids will have more
fun sitting with one another than with
adults or their parents. And seating
kids together makes it easier for serv-
ers if children will be ordering from a
special menu.
• Expect the unexpected. Some seat-
ing arrangements may not work out.
Be sure the reception site is flexible
and can easily put another place set-
ting together if an unexpected guest
arrives or if someone needs to be
moved to another table.
DID YOU KNOW? 39
Brides prefer wedding guests
purchase gifts from their registries.
According to a poll conducted jointly
by The Knot and Kohl’s Bridal Aisle,
nearly 85 percent of the 15,000
brides said they want guests to buy
items from their registries. Guests
need not worry about the accessibil-
ity of those registries, as the poll also
found that 98 percent of brides have
at least one registry online or in a
store. Brides-to-be can improve their
chances of getting gifts from their
registries by registering with nation-
wide stores their guests can visit
regardless of where they live and/or
by linking their registries to their wed-
ding websites. Couples who do not
plan to create websites can include
registry info with their invitations.
