Labor Day weekend has arrived, the unofficial end to the summer season. With one last weekend to squeeze it all in, we’ve packed as much fun as possible into this holiday edition of The Current. This week, we are honored to spotlight a local couple whose admirable contributions to our community often go unrecognized. On page 22, meet Cordi and Devin Park and learn about how their passion for helping youths around the world has evolved into a leadership camp right here at the Sussex County YMCA. If you’re looking for another excuse to get outside, give disc golf a try. If you haven’t played before, we have a beginner’s guide on page 30 to get you started. And finally, what’s Labor Day weekend without one more slice of beach pizza? Check out Hari Cameron’s column this week to get his take on the local pizza hot spots. Ah, pizza – that universal comfort food that, for many, is intertwined with countless memories. It’s been said that even when pizza is bad, it’s still good. I love this dish, even making it at home in my wood-fired oven. The process becomes a cherished ritual when my boys, Max and Bayley, join in, their eager hands lending to the magic. Yet, amidst these heartwarming home-cooked experiences, the pull of a beloved pizzeria beckons. So, without any intended hierarchy, here are some of my favorite slices around town. Casa DiLeo Known for its gigantic 12” slices, it’s a favorite spot for after-work hangouts. The flavorsome base and decadent toppings make each slice a complete meal. Paired with a Peroni beer, it captures the essence of laughter-filled evenings among friends. Dogfish Head Brewings & EatsThe art of pizza-making is held to the same craftsmanship standards as their renowned beers. Having worked there in my younger years, I go back to rekindle fond memories of my youth. half full half full is where culinary creativity meets timeless tradition. The unique rectangular pies are bold and adventurous. Their wine selection ensures that the flavor journey extends beyond the pizza. Louie’s Pizza Each slice feels as if it has been seasoned by the sun and salty air, delivering a harmonious blend of tangy sauce and classic style. For those with a penchant for pepperoni, Louie’s offers a generously loaded slice. Mr. P’s Pizzeria Mr. P's is a tribute to traditional woodfire pizza. Hunter Schaeffer was frustrated. The avid surfer, who is passionate about fitness and holistic health, couldn’t find a nutrition bar that checked all the boxes. “I pretty much tried everything on the market,” says Schaeffer, who grew up in Dover but moved to Rehoboth Beach after graduating from Caesar Rodney High School. Some bars had great ingredients, but the taste was off. Others were packaged as protein bars but contained unhealthy oils and artificial sugars. Schaeffer wasn’t about to play Goldilocks and wait for one that was just right. Instead, he began experimenting in his kitchen. “The goal is to create one of the most functional, great-tasting and cleanest protein bars out there,” he says. He took his homemade bars on surfing trips and gave them to friends. “Wow,” they told him, “these are super sick.” (FYI: That’s a good thing.) Their enthusiasm led to the founding of Fringe Food Co. in March 2022 (fringefoodco.com). Since then, Schaeffer has worked with a production company to create a scalable recipe for commercial production, and a branding team helped him develop the packaging. “I’m super stoked,” he says. “The goal was to create a super unique and radical look — it’s very clean, sharp.” Online sales are a big part of the revenue. However, Schaeffer markets Fringe bars at skimboarding, surfing and paddle board events. He’s also attended vegan festivals. And he’s done it all while managing Rise Up Coffee Roasters in Rehoboth Beach. What is the secret ingredient in Fringe Bars? Functional mushrooms and other adaptogens like ashwagandha. [Adaptogens are botanicals and mushrooms that may help balance cortisol, which affects nearly every organ and tissue in the body. An imbalance can lead to health issues.] You don’t see these in many products, so there’s an opportunity to educate everywhere I go. How do you make mushrooms taste good? It is trial and error, but it’s about using natural, minimally processed and clean ingredients. You won’t get an earthy taste. Each flavor is super unique and super delicious. Currently, there are three flavors: Coconut Cashew, Chocolate Almond Butter and Mango Hemp. How do you manage your time? That’s the biggest challenge. Being a general manager is an around-the-clock job. On the weekends, I’ll get out to events for Fringe, meet people and do samplings. How often do you get to surf? As much as I can. If there are waves, I structure the day around them. It’s a good way to center your mind and keep fit and healthy. Even if you’ve only got a half-hour, catch a few waves and get out there. 14 THE CURRENT | AUGUST 31, 2023 There is no comparison between what Lewes Beach looks like today and what it looked like 100 years ago. Yet, two beach cottages on Bay Avenue have survived the past century to provide countless family memories to five generations of the Ingram and Lupton-Keller families. They are among the few families who have kept ownership in the same families. Their fascinating history at the beach begins when Paynter and Mollie Ingram bought three beach lots for $40 in 1923 and built the original Ingram cottage at 1010 Bay Ave. Paynter sold an adjoining lot to his friend Albert Lupton at 1006 Bay Ave. the same year for $75. Both cottages were completed by September of that year. “For years, we thought he gave them the land, but they recently found a receipt for the sale,” said Sue Ingram Keller, who has connections to both families. Sue is one of the three siblings who inherited the Ingram cottage and is married to Bert Keller, who is one of the siblings in the Lupton-Keller family. Chances are both homes were built with lumber from the Ingram Lumber and Coal Company on Schley Ave. Sue, with help from relatives, Comfort Anne and Woodruff Halsey, authored the Ingram family cottage history. Libby Owen has written a book on the Lupton family history. She said the Ingrams came close to losing their cottage in the 1930s. Her grandfather died in 1926, forcing her grandmother to rent out the cottage. She came close to selling it for $5,000. When the cottage became in need of repairs, her uncle Homer Ingram stepped in. After World War II, he said he would provide upkeep if he could build a second-floor apartment and live there. The two families were friends long before they owned the cottages. The Ingrams lived on Kings Highway and the Luptons lived on Market Street. The Ingrams’ son, Tony, and the Lupton's daughter, Virginia, were friends who went to school together at the old Lewes School on Savannah Road. Virginia later married Albert Keller to start that family linkage. In her book, Owen writes that the cinder road Bayview Avenue ran from Savannah Road in front of the houses along the beach. Garages were built with their doors facing the beach. The road ended about where the Ingram and Lupton cottages were built. No one is really sure when it happened, but sometime in the 1930s, Bayview Avenue was abandoned and traffic was moved to Bay Avenue, which was an alley behind the cottages. Each spring and summer, beach homeowners routinely leveled the dune in front of their properties for better views and beach access. In the mid-1960s, the state began planting beach grass on the dunes and instituted rules to keep people off the dunes, Owen said. The downstairs of the Ingram cottage is owned by Anne Gonser, Anthony Paynter Ingram and Sue Ingram Keller, who are the children of Anthony Paynter Ingram and Jean Cranston Chapin Ingram. The upstairs is owned by Niki Ingram Nieblas. The Lupton-Keller cottage is owned by the family of Jim Keller, who is deceased, Bert Keller, Ginger Keller Beaverson and Libby Keller Owen. The families contribute equally to the upkeep and costs associated with the cottages. The families have worked out a schedule so that each of the owners has equal time to spend at Two Beach Cottages Stay in the Family for 100 Years the cottages during the summer. “We are eternally grateful to the first generation who made this all possible, and to their children and grandchildren who have been such dedicated stewards of these family legacies,” Sue wrote in her book. — Ron MacArthur Above: The exteriors have remained as they looked 100 years ago. 16 THE CURRENT | AUGUST 31, 2023 As the sun sets on the long summer days, the late-night bedtimes and the copious amounts of evening ice cream consumed, you cannot forget the actual sunset. My kiddos and I have officially coined ourselves “The Sunset Chasers.” The closer it gets to school starting, the more serious we get about chasing after those last remaining summer rays. As August winds down, we pile into the car after dinner and head to the beach to clap for the sunset and honor the golden hour. Some of our favorite spots are below. Cape Water Tours Next to the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal, Cape Water Tours offer both sunset and dolphin cruises that give you unobstructed gorgeous views of the sun sinking into Rehoboth Bay. Dewey Beach Since Dewey has the bay on one side and the ocean on the other, it offers plenty of places to catch the sunset over the docks and fishing piers on the Rehoboth Bay. Indian River Inlet This is a great spot where you can watch from under the bridge on the beach, as well as park on the south inlets and walk over the bridge for a higher view. The Big Chill Beach Club is also located here, offering up gorgeous sunset views with the inlet bridge in the background. The Point at Cape Henlopen State Park If you don’t have a season pass, you’ll have to pay a small fee to enter the park, but it’s worth it for the view. Follow the signs for The Point, where you’ll get stunning views of both the ocean on one side and the sun setting behind the Delaware Breakwater East End Lighthouse on the other. If you don’t want to walk down to the water and trudge through the sand, park yourself on one of the benches right off the parking lot. Roosevelt Inlet This is one of our favorites because you don’t have to get the kids sandy and wet. You can bring them bathed and, in their pajamas because it’s possible to avoid all the sand. You can bring beach chairs and park in the public lot next to the Lewes Yacht Club. We sit above the rocks to search for mermaids, while waving to the incoming boats while watching the sunset. I TOLD DEVIN YEARS AGO THAT WHAT YOU’RE PASSIONATE ABOUT IS GOING TO TAKE OVER YOUR LIFE. HE’S PASSIONATE ABOUT YOUTH, BASKETBALL, MINISTRY AND JUST DOING FOR OTHERS.” — CORDI PARK Devin and his wife Cordi Park as shown in their leadership camp at Sussex Family YMCA in Rehoboth Beach.

24 THE CURRENT | AUGUST 31, 2023 As a youth, Devin Park found the nurturing and support he needed at the H. Fletcher Brown Boys & Girls Club in Wilmington — a beloved innercity institution near the Brandywine Creek. It’s where Devin and his twin brother Darin honed their basketball skills with a team of coaches and counselors. “After school they taught us not just basketball, but also how to cook, how to play chess, how to use our mind,” Devin says. “They made us study and then do some more. These guys really kept a lot of us off the streets. And if it wasn't for them, we don't know what kind of trouble we could have got into.” Fast-forward 50-plus years, and Devin, along with wife Cordi Park, are giving back as two of Delaware’s leading philanthropists. The couple works hard to nurture and develop young minds through a popular leadership camp at Sussex Family YMCA in Rehoboth Beach. The Teen Leaders Program at the Sussex Family Y, which has been running since 2018, has quickly become a family favorite. The Parks run the eight-week program with students ranging from 11 to 15. Cordi spearheads the curriculum, which focuses on one particular pillar each week, such as teamwork, character development and physical fitness. “We start with teaching overall leadership and the core values of the YMCA, which is honesty, caring, respect and responsibility,” says Cordi. “From there, we teach life skills, so we focus on money management, time management and self-care. We talk about cultural appreciation. We focus on the arts and go to some of the local museums and we hold a career week. It’s a real interactive program for them.” Funded by the Delaware Criminal Justice Council, the Parks’ program enrolled 30 students this year (with a waiting list), who receive the couple’s unique brand of education and discipline. They’ve witnessed some miraculous results in the last five years, like the student who walked in on Day One with his hands in his pockets and his head turned down. Today? He’s a communications major in college. “That's my motivation because I was told I wasn't going to make it,” says Devin. “I was told I was too small to play basketball, not smart enough. And all I ever did was prove everyone wrong. I love the kids who everybody gives up on, even the ones who give up on themselves — and say, ‘Come on, let's hook up and let's turn your life around.’” Devin and his brother Darin were both first-team all-state basketball selections for Claymont High School in 1981. They are the only two brothers in Delaware high school basketball history to be named to the first team in the same year. Both men were inducted into the Delaware Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame during its annual banquet earlier this year. In June, the City of Wilmington dedicated a basketball court to the legendary brothers at Burton Brown Winchester Park. Education and basketball have provided Devin a natural outlet to mentor and develop young men and women. He started his career as Dean of Students/Assistant Principal working with adjudicated youth at Saint Gabriel’s Hall in Audubon, Pennsylvania that focused on restorative justice principles. Over the course of 12 years as the basketball coach there, he became the school’s all-time wins leader. His players were so well-disciplined, he says, that not a single one received a technical foul call during his tenure. Additionally, Devin and Cordi currently serve as ambassadors for the Alan Horwitz “Sixth Man” Center, a 100,000 square foot facility in Philly’s Nicetown neighborhood that combines basketball programming (spread across seven indoor courts) with academic, social-and-emotional and civic and career opportunities. After a long career in education with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Devin says God sent him a new calling: “I needed to go out to the world and help the world,” he says. “And it started with feeding people in our neighborhoods and planting churches in different rough areas of Philadelphia and Pottstown, Pennsylvania, and Wilmington to become resource centers.” From there, he says, “I heard a voice say now it’s time to go abroad. So we started traveling.” The Parks partnered with advocates and officials on the ground to fund the creation of a free bible school in the African nation of Nigeria. “A two-year seminary diploma is what you got,” Parks says. But before long, word of the program’s quality grew, and school leaders met with local government officials to greatly expand the school’s scope. Today, Freedom University and Theological Seminary is fully accredited by the Nigerian government and endorsed by the United Nations. It offers a diploma program in theology, as well as bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. programs. “And people thought we were crazy for setting up free Bible schools,” Parks laughs. The Parks and their co-investors have spread the model to facilities in Malawi, Liberia, Ghana, Zimbabwe and more. They’ve partnered to establish feeding centers and medical clinics around Africa, too. In August, from Liberty Church in Queens, New York, the Parks and others hosted a basketball team from The Bishops’ High School in Guyana. Their team is one of the best in the South American country, but the sport’s popularity among fellow Guyaneans pales in comparison to cricket and soccer. students and coaches hopes to change that. With Devin as their ambassador, the team is planning to create a basketball camp for Guyanean kids and coaches, in hopes of growing the sport on a national scale, and eventually offering opportunities to play in America. Through all their travels, projects and adventures, Devin, 60, and Cordi, 55, remain inseparable. “We just love what we do, and people can't understand…you guys live together, you work together, you teach together? Most couples can’t even just live together,” Cordi says. For the Rehoboth couple, teaching and giving is a way of life. They’ve raised four kids on the same principles of love, faith, discipline and high expectations. All four — Doris, Devin Jr., Brianna, and Nicole — have achieved lofty goals academically, athletically and professionally. “I told Devin years ago that what you’re passionate about is going to take over your life,” Cordi says. And he’s passionate about youth, basketball, ministry and just doing for others. It just fuels us being able to have an impact on someone else’s life in a positive way.” H TURN TO PAGE 35 TO SEE OUR PHOTO OF THE WEEK From left to right, Former 76ers Wally Jones, Bishop Michael Brokenborough, Devin and Philadelphia Youth Baseball founder and president Kenny Holdsman. 28 THE CURRENT | AUGUST 31, 2023 Have you ever stayed in a hotel room and seen any remnants of a prior guest? Something so small as a hair in the sink gives one an uneasy feeling of the cleanliness of the room. This is the same for renters who are paying good money to occupy your home. Here are a few maintenance tips to keep your renters happy. PAINTING The goal is to provide a freshly painted home showing no marks or damage. Most homes don’t require the ceiling to be painted every time a rental turns over, however, the walls should be clean and free of any marks. A touch-up might work just as well, but it needs to be a clean presentation and matched paint. It is highly recommended that you leave some paint for the tenants so if they do mark up a wall, they have the ability to touch it up themselves. CARPETS/FLOORING How old is your carpet? When was the last time you had it professionally cleaned? These are questions that come up when a tenant vacates. Did it look brand new when they moved in? The goal is to start the tenant off with a positive experience of walking into your home and having a sense of pride. If the carpets are worn or show signs of heavy traffic areas, it will look worse by the time the tenant has vacated. I am interested in renting my place out. 30 THE CURRENT | AUGUST 31, 2023 HOW TO PLAY The first known disc golf game dates back to 1926 in Saskatchewan, Canada. Disc Golf Sometimes called Frisbee golf, this is the only sport where throwing things at trees is not only acceptable, but encouraged. ➊Disc golf is a game where any number of players attempt to throw a specialized disc into a standing basket with the fewest number of throws. ➋Do not use a regular Frisbee. Disc golf discs are much different and are made for long distances. Bright colors are recommended to avoid losing them. ➌Decide who will go first. After that, the player with the fewest strokes on the previous hole goes first and tees are set up at the beginning of each hole. ➍A “lie” is where your throw lands, marked by a mini disc or turning over the thrown disc. You must throw from behind the lie on your next turn. ➎“Unplayable lies” allow you to throw from as close to the lie as possible, such as when your disc gets stuck in a tree. Fairway throws allow a run-up and follow through, but not within 10 meters of the basket. ➏A "mandatory" refers to a designated tree or pole on the fairway that must be passed on the correct side indicated by an arrow. Failing to pass on the correct side results in a penalty of one stroke and the player must either continue from their previous lie or play from a marked drop zone. ➐The round is completed by throwing the disc into the basket (generally these baskets are made of chains). Remove your disc after completing the hole. ➑At the end of each round, the player with the fewest number of strokes wins. Games consist of 18 holes, but each course can vary. WHERE CAN YOU PLAY? AUGUST 31, 2023 | THE CURRENT 33 As you leave The Pig and Publican and are wiping that last bit of mayonnaise from your mouth (you did eat your fries Belgian style, didn’t you?), turn to your left and be amazed by a mural that nearly covers the building’s side, all but invisible from the street. The location is no mistake — the mural is a tribute to Otis Smith, former mayor of Lewes, and it overlooks the park that carries his name. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, segregation in housing, schools and public accommodations was still a part of life in our area. Progress was slow in the fight for equal rights for African Americans and political support for change was even slower to arrive. Up stepped Otis Smith, owner of the menhaden fish-processing plants in Lewes and mayor of Lewes from 1950 to 1968. Smith thought that racial discrimination was immoral and decided to do something about it. He reached out to fellow mayors, religious leaders, business owners, media outlets and politicians of all stripes to form the alliances required to create effective civil rights legislation. In addition to working for equal rights, Otis Smith served on the Board of Directors of Beebe Hospital and oversaw many civic improvements in Lewes, including the building a of public dock, running electric and water lines to Lewes Beach and developing Lewes City Hall. Smith also is credited with helping to establish the University of Delaware’s marine science program in Lewes. In the spring of 2019, artist Damon Pla created this large-scale mural, which depicts a scene from the Lewes menhaden fishing industry and honors Otis Smith. “I call it ‘First Catch’,” explains the artist, “because I envisioned that first beam of light coming up and warming the fishermen’s shoulders — that first catch of the morning.” The Menhaden Mural project was organized by Art in Bloom, which partnered with the Lingo family, who owns the property, to honor the legacy of Otis Smith.
