once again conducted the annual Med Matters Healthcare Survey with a Content Coordinator

The term concierge medicine has made its way into
the vernacular of thousands of patients in the Cape Source: Concierge Medicine Today, DocWireNews, The American Journal of Medicine
Region, a model in which an annual fee is charged,
often on top of any costs you incur for treatment.
The fee varies depending on the level of membership
you select or on your age. Some area practices have
begun to migrate over to this new model and notifed
patients that they can either join their new program
and stay with their doctor for their pricey annual fee
of $1800 or more, or seek care elsewhere – leaving
many outraged. Practices have turned into a pay-to-
play operation that will only benefit people who can
afford it, opponents say.

Clinicians who have embranced the model say it
will allow them to practice medicine the way they
always envisioned, with a focus on wellness and pre-
vention in addition to diagnosis and treatment. This
enables them and their patients to dive much deeper
into all aspects of their health and better identify
risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression
and other conditions. Research shows that patients
in this model are less likely to end up in the hospital
or the ER.

While proponents understand the annual fee can
be an issue for some patients, they say the benefits
far outweigh the costs, with smaller practices allowing
for more personalized attention to patients.

Patients receive a comprehensive annual exam for
a proactive approach to medicine, which can reduce
future medical costs because problems are caught
early. This preventative approach reduces the high
cost of hospitalized care by 70-80 percent and for
those who are admitted to a hospital, the readmission
rate is also low. The philosophy is that managing care
keeps patients out of high-price situations. Of the es-
timated 12,000 concierge physicians nationwide, av-
erage fees range from $1500-$1700 a year, with $135
per month on average. Some practices continue to bill
insurers for medical services on top of the annual fee;
however, most don’t accept insurance and instead bill
patients directly. The latter requires payment upfront
for treatment and charges menu-style pricing for ser-
vices earning the title “direct primary care.” However,
it is not a replacement for insurance still needed for
hospitals, specialists, and uncovered care.
