PRIMARY 3 READING ALOUD 5 ST. GABRIEL’S COLLEGE SOURCE: https://englishtreasuretrove.com/ There are many uses for pumpkins. They can be used to make soup and pies. Pumpkins are very popular at Halloween and Thanksgiving. Scientifically, pumpkins are fruits because they have seeds. However, in cooking, people often refer to pumpkins as vegetables. Pumpkins can be baked, roasted, steamed, or boiled. People also use pumpkins as ornaments, especially at Halloween. People like to carve scary faces using the shell of the pumpkins. They place candles inside the shell and use the pumpkins as lanterns. Farmers also use pumpkins to make the heads of scarecrows. Scarecrows help to scare birds away from fields of crops.

PRIMARY 3 READING ALOUD ST. GABRIEL’S COLLEGE 6 2. Self – Control Self - Control is keeping your emotions in check. It’s balancing your wants and your needs. It’s being mature. There are many ways to show self-control. Jackie had a temper. Little things made her angry. She tried really hard to control it. Her teacher showed her how to count to 10 before saying something when she got angry. It saved her from saying a lot of unkind things that she really didn’t mean! Jackie was learning self-control.

PRIMARY 3 READING ALOUD 7 ST. GABRIEL’S COLLEGE Henry loved to eat sweet stuff. His mom didn’t let him have too much, though. He only got to eat cookies and cake on rare occasions, so when he got some, he ate it slowly. He saved some for the next day and the next. He didn’t want to eat it all at once, or it’d be gone. Henry had self-control. How do you show self-control? SOURCE: https://www.havefunteaching.com/

PRIMARY 3 READING ALOUD ST. GABRIEL’S COLLEGE 8 3. A Glass of Milk There once was a poor boy who spent his days going door-to-door selling newspaper to pay for school. One day, as he was walking his route, he started feeling low and weak. The poor boy was starving, so he decided to ask for food when he came to the next door. The poor boy asked for food but was denied every time, until he reached the door of a girl. He asked for a glass of water, but seeing his poor state, the girl came back with a glass of milk. The boy asked how much he owed her for the milk, but she refused payment.

PRIMARY 3 READING ALOUD 9 ST. GABRIEL’S COLLEGE Years later, the girl, who was now a grown woman, fell sick. She went from doctor to doctor, but no one was able to cure her. Finally, she went to the best doctor in town. The doctor spent months treating her until she was finally cured. Despite her happiness, she was afraid she couldn’t afford to pay the bill. But, when the hospital handed her the bill, it read, ‘Paid in full’, with a glass of milk. The Moral: No good deed goes unrewarded. SOURCE: https://createdres.com/

PRIMARY 3 READING ALOUD ST. GABRIEL’S COLLEGE 10 4. The Bee Bees live in a house that is called a hive. There are three kinds of bees: workers, drones, and queens. Only one queen bee can live in each hive. If she is lost or dead, the other bees will stop their work. Bees are very wise and busy little creatures. They all join together to build cells of wax for their honey. Each bee takes

PRIMARY 3 READING ALOUD 11 ST. GABRIEL’S COLLEGE its proper place and does its own work. Some go out and gather honey from the flowers; others stay at home and work inside the hive. The cells which they build are all of one shape and size, and no room is left between them. The cells are not round. They have six sides. Did you ever look into a glass hive to see the bees while at work? It is pleasant to see how busy they always are. But the drones do not work. Before winter comes, all the drones are driven from the hive so that they don’t eat the honey which they did not gather. It is not safe for children to handle bees. Bees have a painful sting that they use in their defense. SOURCE: https://www.k5learning.com/

PRIMARY 3 READING ALOUD ST. GABRIEL’S COLLEGE 14 6. The Hungry Fox Who Got Caught in the Tree Trunk Once upon a time, there was a hungry fox that was looking for something to eat. He was very hungry. No matter how hard he tried, the fox could not find food. Finally, he went to the edge of the forest and searched there for food. Suddenly, he caught sight of a big tree with a hole in it. Inside the hole was a package. The hungry fox immediately thought that there might be food in it, and became very happy. He jumped into the hole. When he opened the package, he saw slices of bread, meat and fruit in it! An old woodcutter had placed the food in the tree trunk before he began to cut down trees in the forest. He was going to eat it for his lunch.

PRIMARY 3 READING ALOUD 15 ST. GABRIEL’S COLLEGE The fox happily began to eat. After he finished eating, he felt thirsty and decided to leave the hole and drink some water from a nearby spring. However, no matter how hard he tried, he could not get out of the hole. Do you know why? Yes, the fox had eaten so much food that he became too big to fit through the hole! The fox was very sad and upset. He told himself, “I wish I had thought a little before jumping into the hole.” Moral : If you are too greedy, you can get trapped as well. PRIMARY 3 READING ALOUD ST. GABRIEL’S COLLEGE 16 7. Controlling Anger Once, there was a young boy. This boy had problems controlling his anger. When he got angry, he would say the first thing that came to mind, even if it affected people. One day, his father gifted him a hammer and a bundle of nails, then said, “Whenever you get mad, hammer a nail into the backyard fence.” In the first days, the boy used up half of the nails. Over the next weeks, he used up fewer nails, until his temper was under control. Then, his father asked the young boy to remove a nail for each day he didn’t lose his temper. On the day when the boy removed his last nail, his father told him, “You have done well, boy. But, can you see the holes in the

PRIMARY 3 READING ALOUD ST. GABRIEL’S COLLEGE 20 9. Nature is the Best Teacher There was a naughty kid who was rude. His parents were tired of his bad habits. They decide to leave him with a wise old man for a week. The old man told the kid he will only be allowed to eat, play, and speak if he completes the daily tasks given to him.

PRIMARY 3 READING ALOUD 21 ST. GABRIEL’S COLLEGE They went into a forest and the man asked the kid to pluck the grass as his first task. With an arrogant smile, he easily did it. The next day, the man asked him to uproot a sapling as a second task, he did as told. The next day, the man asked him to uproot a shrub, with much struggle he was able to complete the task. Last day, the man wanted the kid to uproot a fully grown tree. The kid looked at the tree and said, “I can’t even try, it is so big. This is impossible.” The old man replied, “Exactly my dear, same is true for your bad habits. If you let them grow, they become difficult to remove.” SOURCE: https://moralstoryminute.com/nature-is-the-bestteacher/

PRIMARY 3 READING ALOUD ST. GABRIEL’S COLLEGE 22 10. How to Make a Fire Long ago, cavemen rubbed two dry sticks together very fast. The sticks became hot and started to burn. The cavemen blew on the wood and it became a flame. Another way to make a fire is by using sparks. When a hammer hits a nail, sometimes sparks would come out. Cavemen made sparks by striking a piece of flint against a lump of hard rock. Then, they held some dry grass to the sparks to make a flame.

GABRIEL’S COLLEGE SOURCE: Vocabulary and Comprehension Primary 2 by Bebe Cheng & Loh Tee Yang mc Marshall Cavendish Education Printed in Singapore by Times Graphics Pte Ltd Today, we use matches. It is an easier way to make a flame. We do this by striking the ends of small strips of wood against the rough surface on a matchbox.
