A horse-crazy girl since birth, Rosanna Malcolm launched her company Interest Candles
in 2020 during the pandemic; a period she explained was filled of both deep reflection and boredom
that somehow crystalized her dream into starting an equestrian business. The company’s tag-line
light your joy every day™, encapsulates her hope that whenever horse lovers are missing the barn,
Interesttheir horses, or any facet of equestrian life her candles will remind them of what they love so much.

Tell us a little bit about your entrepreneurial
influence and what eventually inspired you
to pursue a horse-centric business. Do you
come from an equestrian or horse enthusiast
background?
I became an entrepreneur by accident, not
design or dream. My first company was one I
co-founded in 2001 with a business partner; it
was the outcome of a really unique Silicon Valley
opportunity that intersected mobile technology
and entertainment marketing. I had no idea if
I could actually launch a company, but I knew
I would regret it if I didn’t try. It turned out to
be the most stressful and the most rewarding
business experience ever. I was company
COO for ten years as we grew our idea into a
100-person firm with clients around the globe.
During that period we were also working with
entertainment superstars like Justin Timberlake,
Maroon 5, and Taylor Swift: suffice to say it was
a heady and incredible time. In 2011, I had a
run-in with breast cancer and realized I needed
to slow way, way down. I left my company; I
rested; I healed; and then I just knew that I had to
get back to horses.
I had been a rabid 4-H kid and active young
equestrian – riding hunter jumper from age 5 to
25 and having a barn and 3 horses on my parent’s
property. Once I started traveling extensively for
my job, I didn’t have the time horses deserve. In
2013, after more than 20 years out of the saddle,
I decided that riding would be better for my post-
mastectomy chest and shoulder issues than any
other physical therapy I was trying. And that was
that – the horse bug was back. Now, 8 years later,
my husband and I built out a horse property, have
a herd of 5 and I’ve created a line of equestrian
candles.
Tell us about your designs and products.
Where does your focus lie when your set out
on a new candle? Can you walk us through
your creative stages?
My designs and candle products are really varied
simply because there are so many ways we enjoy
horses; whether it’s by discipline, activity or
lifestyle. At times, that reality puts my creative
stages all over the map, but generally the name
for a candle pops in my head and then I go from
there. My very first candle was Equestrian; it’s
super simple and literal. I used the dictionary
definition for the word, the look of a dictionary,
a leather scent and a farmhouse style jar with a
kraft label.
The next candles were inspired by my journey
to learn dressage; that was the first time I used a
“mood board”. I set up a display on my desk of a
silver bell, a diagram of a dressage court, and photos of competition showcase
horses. The end result was a graphically lined horse in a pirouette;
the lines in his body represent all the geometry of dressage. After Shop Follow
that experience, I started using actual boards for every design – the
board holds objects, sketches, photos and colors of what the candle interestcandles.etsy.com @ interest_candle
name represents to me.
photo Mackenzie Clark
I’ve also learned a lot about design since I launched. The act of
designing is completely new to me and I won’t lie, some things have | W21 55
totally bombed!
That’s just the artwork component for the candle’s look – the scents
are another ball of wax (pun intended)! As I work on the visuals, I
am sampling dozens of fragrances. Again, some are quite literal –
like the scent of freshly cut grass for my Pasture candle. Others are
much more conceptual, like the peppermint and eucalyptus used in
my X candle. As I tested fragrances, my thinking was the letter X is
basically where everything begins and ends in dressage and to me
that required an invigorating scent.
What’s your most popular candle scent? What’s your personal
favorite?
My most popular scent varies which is a dynamic of the candle
industry; there are trending, classic, thematic and seasonal
fragrances that I’m learning to navigate. That said, Halt has always
been the overall top-seller, probably because the scent is a calming
one and all of us have been so stressed out these past few years! My
personal favorite is Treats Please because all my horses are cookie
monsters. I designed the label to represent their begging muzzles
and the candle itself smells like their favorite oaty-sugary nuggets.
Do you see your brand expanding beyond candles?
The brand won’t expand beyond candles, but the candle line is
expanding beyond equestrian! My business doesn’t have a horsey
name because I suspected from the start that I would apply the
“light your joy every day” action to a range of interests focused
on outdoor pursuits and animals. This year I released a candle for
water lovers, called Lake Breeze and one for campers called Pine
Pitch-it. While there will be more interest themed products coming,
equestrians will always be my priority focus. Truly, I feel like I’ve
just scratched the surface given the breadth of the horse world.
We just love how your candles contribute to an aesthetic.
They’re lovely in design and the scents bring about a memory or
feeling. Where can we purchase all of them?
All of my products are available in my Etsy shop via my website,
www.interest-candles.com. I chose Etsy as my store platform
for many reasons, but mostly because they are environmentally
conscience. Where I can, I try to make a difference with my
business model. As an example, my products are fragile and I need
shipping filler, -- for that I use biodegradable peanuts made from
corn and potato starch that melts in water, can be composted or even
tossed in the manure pile! My product containers can be recycled,
not just because the label designs add to home decor, but because
the lidded jars, tins and even my cloth gift bags are all truly re-
usable.
From the beginning, the customer has been top of mind. I’ve tried to
create a complete experience with a product that literally keeps on
giving – a lighted candle that burns clean and long, vessels that can
be re-used, packaging that can be recycled and most of all, one that
sparks the joy we all feel when we connect with a horse.

Hunt and Hall brings together all of the best things about Britain
From the heritage and high quality, to the quirky original aesthetic
found on women up and down the country.
Created by international celebrity stylist Natalie Harper Howell,
the brand is designed with luxury and ease at the forefront - after all,
it shouldn't be difficult to look put together and feel good,
Hunt and Hall is designed for women who want effortless style
they really don't have to spend hours agonising over. Each item is
designed to complement each other so women can truly mix and
match without having to think too hard, and build their own
wardrobe of elegant, classic attire.
A keen horsewoman, many of the designs have an equestrian edge,
particularly the blazers which are a nod to her love of the English
countryside and years spent riding around it.

BEHIND
the
BRAND
Natalie worked hard to use only the best materials for each
piece - sourcing as much as possible from the UK, right
down to the blazer buttons. This is reflected in the elevated
price tag, leaving the wearer safe in the knowledge what
they have bought will last for many years to come, while
also supporting the British fashion industry.
Natalie was inspired not only by her work in LA, London
and Dubai, but much closer to home too. The classic Fair
Isle jumper is based on one in her grandmother’s wardrobe
that she vividly remembers coveting as a child - Hunt and
Hall’s version is made from baby alpaca, making it ten
times warmer than wool, has antibacterial properties so
doesn’t need to be cleaned as frequently and also great
for people with sensitive skin as it is super soft. Keeping
sustainability at the forefront, each jumper will be shipped
in moth resistant bags for the buyer to store in when it is
not in use, so that the jumper will last and last.
All of the pieces in the collection are future British
classics, designed to be easily mixed and matched and
worn year after year for any occasion - whether dropping
the kids off at school, going for a walk in nature, or
cosying up in a pub with friends.
Hunt & Hall are a luxury British lifestyle brand and proud
to be making their name using Scottish woven tweeds,
cashmeres, sheepskin finest suedes – worked into unique
pieces carefully crafted to be worn, kept and cherished
forever. British quality, heritage and a dash of eccentricity
– Hunt and Hall has embodied and modernised the
great British wardrobe. Taking inspiration from British
heritage and equestrian roots, H & H designs pieces which
incorporate a contemporary update, presenting tweed with
a fashion forward focus. From classic traditional outerwear
to on-trend jackets, capes and blazers, the latest collections
demonstrate the brands diversity & sustainability,
delivering something new to the market. As champions of
British manufacturing, each tweed and sheepskin piece is
designed, hand cut and made entirely in England.

Kristy Lake | W21 67
Introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about
your company when you came to be, where you
are located and what you do.
Hi!
My name is Kristy Lake, I own Dreamers &
Schemers and ManeJane and I love FUN :)
D&S Started in 2005 in my basement ( I actually
have a video that my husband took of me making
the very first pair) and along the line we acquired
ManeJane Spur Straps and it has grown into the #1
ridiculously amazing equestrian accessory company
worldwide! We are located part time in Canada and
part time in Southern California and love both areas
so much.
What inspired you to start your Equestrian
accessory line?
I used to own an equestrian boutique in Canada and
once I started to go to horse shows, I noticed that
most kids would come to the show with $20-$40 a
day for food and something fun. Not a lot of things
in my trailer were fun and under $20… So that’s
when the idea for D&S started to form.
The name “Dreamers and Schemers” are you
willing to share the insider track on how the name
transpired?
Well, I am always dreaming up new business
ideas and scheming ways to make them happen!
My brain is a hamster wheel of entrepreneurial
awesomeness.
Let’s talk socks. More importantly, let’s talk
about your socks. What do you think separates
your boot socks from others? (Beyond of course
the notably humorous prints we all love)
Well, we were the very first sock company that put
a black cuff at the top of the sock to prevent the
pattern from peeking out of your boots, so that is
cool! We also have a lightly padded cotton foot that
wraps from the top of the toes to the back of your
heel to wick sweat and add a little comfort without
bulk. Last but not least, we have a FLAT SEAM
that runs across the tops of your toes so you cant
even feel it! I hate feeling that ridge between my
toes and my boot.
Back to the notables…where do you get your
ideas for the entertaining quotes and designs?
Mostly day to day shenanigans! I am always
looking at what is trending in stores and online.
Spending time at the horse shows is always good
inspiration. Having a small batch custom printer in
the USA is super handy for reacting to pop culture
and inside jokes ;) Also, my partner Elizabeth has a
super sense of humor and we can come up with the
weirdest stuff when you get us going.
Most riders are familiar with your boot socks, but you also have collaborative collections featuring spur straps, belts,
totes, dog toys etc. What new collaborations can we look forward to in 2022?
MORE SOCKS! Youth socks, crew socks, winter socks, all the socks… Plus a few more surprises that we cannot speak about yet,
but I think people are going to get a kick out of it.
If you could share your wisdom on being a successful business owner, what would you tell a new start up?
Oh gosh, just keep going. Don’t get caught up in the competition or the copycats. Find your original voice, take TIME to really
think about a mission statement and make sure everything you do aligns with it. People will find you. You will find your people.
Not everyone is going to like you, in fact, it may seem that more people dislike you than you ever thought. IT’S OK. It is usually
not about you. Brush it off and keep going. It is going to be hard to remove your emotions from your baby business but you have
to grow a thick skin. Develop a faux customer service identity if you need a buffer ;)
Don’t tear anyone else down. Take the high road and say nothing if need be. Clean up your social media, personal and business.
Do not get caught up in the gossip or the takedowns or the sh*t talk. YOU HAVE NO TIME FOR THAT!
My DM’s are always open!

How did your passion for polo begin?
I was first introduced to polo in my early 30’s and became
completely addicted. I played for twenty-five years after that and
competed in many tournaments to much success. I have about
20 bronzes.
What do you love most about the sport?
I have always been passionate about horses and appreciate
the relationship you build with the animal. I was drawn to the
competitive nature of the sport, the physical challenge and the
excitement and strategy of the match. It’s a fabulous sport.
What has been your most memorable moment or
accomplishment on the field?
My most memorable moment on the field was when we
played the Governor’s cup in Indio. It was a single-elimination
tournament with 24 teams. We won every match, the final and
the Governor’s Cup.
Every year Polo Magazine names a Professional and Amateur
the Player of the Year. In 1996, they recognized me as ‘Amateur
of the Year.’ I received a Tommy statue, named after the
legendary Tommy Hitchock who was the first Player of the
Year and a 10 gold player overall. The award is equivalent to
winning an Oscar in the film business and meant a lot to me and
validated my love for the game. That was one of my biggest
accomplishments to-date.

Lindsay Hunter
Introduce yourself and tell us a little
bit about your company when you
came to be, where you are located and
what you do.
What elements of Interior Design would
you say defines a Lindsay Hunter project?
I work with many types of clients
(equestrians and non-equestrians) in a
range of design styles, but I always find
a way to incorporate my signature color-
green. Green is a color that connects us
to nature and living things. When we
bring green into our homes, it gives us a
sense of feeling grounded and connected
to the Earth. Spring is my favorite season
(despite the allergies in Tennessee),
everything is coming back to life and I
feel rejuvenated- a feeling that I want in
my space every day.
What would be your dream makeover?
Although I love decorating a single room,
my favorite projects are the ones that
incorporate the entire property- from the
house to the barn- where I can create a
connection between the horses’ living
space and the humans’ space. I love the
process of building a house from the
ground up, customizing every detail for
the clients, from floor plans to fluffing the
last pillow and of course, attending the
housewarming party.
For those of us who dabble with
Equestrian tones in our own homes,
what secrets are you willing to divulge?
Design should be authentic and
meaningful. It’s about telling your
story- which memories do you want to
bring into your home? What connects
you to your horse on an emotional level?
How do you want to feel in your space-
invigorated, inspired, relaxed? Pay
attention to how your mementos make
you feel. Is a piece of tack tied to a sad
or happy memory? Does that memory
give you the feeling you want in that
space?
When I designed my equestrian bedroom,
I focused on the story I wanted to tell
about my twenty year relationship with
my horse, Alice. When she passed, in
an attempt to hang on to her physical
being I coveted the tack she left behind. I
wanted to display it in a way that honored
her and reminded me of our connection,
and I wanted to start and end my day with
that feeling everyday.
shsohwowcacsaese
As equestrians, we tend to acquire more tack than we need, and as our
horses move through our lives, we are often left with a trunk (or garage)
full of tack. Anything can be used as decoration- old boots, stirrup
irons, your favorite horse’s halter. If it has meaning to you, it can be
decorative. I give you permission to bring your old, dirty tack into your
house!
What made you decide to open your own shop?
I am inspired by the elegance and history of equestrian culture,
particularly British, and I wanted to curate a collection of items
that evoke the feeling of the British countryside. I created Modern
Equestrian Shop so that equestrian-enthusiasts could create the
equestrian look in their own homes. From equestrian artwork to cozy
cashmere tartan blankets and saddle leather boxes with brass stirrup
buckles, these items are meant to compliment the equestrian’s own tack
and treasures from the barn to create a cohesive equestrian aesthetic.
