5 FUNCTIONAL tips for staying FIT through the Holidays Shared by Scarlett Gauthier The Functional Rider In 2021, Scarlett Gauthier started The Functional Rider. “It has been the perfect opportunity to combine my passion for fitness, nursing education and riding together. I was encouraged by my educators to spread the concepts that have helped me to others,” Scarlett said. “I help teach riders how their anatomy works in motion. Most people are just confused on how the body works and can’t solve the puzzle without a little bit of help,” Scarlett said. “My sessions consist of postural correction, core strength training and myofascial stretching.” Scarlett has learned that each rider has different challenges and conformation. “Once you’re able to identify your weaknesses, you can direct your energy to improvement,” she said. With the holidays upon us, we thought we might get some tips from Scarlett as to how to stay healthy during the season as we maneuver more stress, more sweets and more time riding., hopefully. | W23 14

1. My biggest rule, especially as I get older is eating small meals throughout the day that contain complex carbohydrates and protein to keep my blood sugar and hormone levels regulated. When I practice this routine my energy is consistent and I'm less likely to over eat at meal times.  I usually dedicate 2 days a week to meal prepping and this keeps me on track. One of my favorite hacks is recreating cheat meals with healthy ingredients for my sweet tooth craving and let's face it we have plenty temptations around the holidays. 2. Keeping snacks at the barn helps me stay on track. Snacks such as protein bars, nuts, dried fruit, jerky are great to keep on hand just in case I end up staying a bit longer than anticipated which is usually the case. 3. Adequate water consumption is the key to avoiding fatigue. When our muscles are dehydrated it may negatively affect our performance in the saddle and increase the chances for injury. Keep quality water on you or close by always. 4. Get you ZZZs! Lack of sleep can increase hormone levels that may increase hunger and decrease healing and recovery.  Some hints: Try decreasing stimulation approximately 1 hour prior to bedtime. When I’ve had a stressful day and need a little extra help winding down, I  practice deep breathing which activates the body’s relaxation response. 5. I make it a priority to to get in at least 3 workout sessions a week which includes cardio, strength  training, and most importantly stretching. Weight bearing exercises not only boost metabolism but increase bone density.   Important End Note: I always let myself have a cheat meal when I know I need it. After all, we are all human and if we do not satisfy our cravings once in a while we will most likely over indulge trying to meet that craving. As an athlete and registered nurse I take my health and wellness seriously and I love sharing my knowledge to help motivate others. My equestrian fitness program is designed to help keep the busy equestrian mobile, strong, and flexible for an improved quality of everyday life and performance in the saddle. I teach functional anatomy and educate my clients on how to use their body effectively to avoid injury and improve awareness. Here we go BOOK A SESSION Zoom sessions begin with posture correction and asymmetry assessments then a tailored program is designed for those specific needs. I also offer a 6 week rider fit course which includes 18 workout videos suitable for all level riders.  For more information visit my website functionalrider.com and the @thefunctionalrider on instagram. | W23 15 health

showcase the sassyASS Q&A What is the story behind The Sassy Ass?  Growing up in an eventing barn, donkeys were not really a priority. We ended up adopting one from the BLM that I begged my mom to keep. I was only allowed to keep him if I could get his hoofs picked out, which I did by about the age of 5. Flash-forward over 25 years later and I have a herd of 8 that are all at their forever home along with our horses. The name came from always referring to them as “Sassy Little Assholes.”   What do you wish people knew about mini donkeys/donkey care? They make great additions to your horse farm! We have one who lives solely with the horses (he might think he is one). They also have incredible memories! They can remember people and other animals decades later. What kind of products do you offer? All Gifts- T Shirts, drinkware, stickers. We try to keep them fun and relatable. What is your long-term vision for The Sassy Ass? We would love to continue to offer a wider range of equine products, while also bringing awareness to how incredible donkeys are. As we continue to grow we want to add more donkeys that need a home to our farm.  Where can we find The Sassy Ass? Right now online www.thesassyass.com 24/7 and occasionally at our farm in Hillsboro, VA when we have events open to the public. We also offer private tours where the products can be purchased alongside meeting the herd! thesassyass.com

MAJYK Making When you think about most Equestrian brands you know, chances are they’ve been around for many decades. So how did a relative newcomer in the tack world quickly become the new ‘it’ brand for Olympic athletes and trainers? We met up with the Q Founders of Majyk Equipe to learn more. &A Tell us about your background. Our team members worked for Fortune 500 companies, introducing some of the most iconic sports brands in recent history. We’ve seen firsthand how human athletic wear has really evolved. We’re also riders so we were very aware that it was time for those new ideals to reach the equestrian world. We introduced breathable foams, hi-tech materials and 21st century impact systems that weren’t yet readily available in this industry. You’re working with some of the top riders in the world. How did that happen? We were showcasing our products at a local California show when the legendary Hap Hansen saw our range and asked about them. He was so impressed that he started using them on all his top horses. Later, we were approached by Boyd Martin, a 3x Olympian, Caroline Powell a Bronze Medal Winner for New Zealand, and the Irish Eventing Olympic Team. They all noticed the difference in our products and wanted to get involved. You famously put out a video that shows a bowling ball dropping on Majyk Equipe horse boots. The boots have a glass bottle inside that stays intact while a competitor’s boots allow the bottle to smash. Did that help you to gain fans for your products? Yes, it’s one of the things we’ve done from the start. We’ve also conducted tests at a military facility that specializes in testing riot gear to make sure it stands up to blunt trauma and hard impact force. Our boots beat out other leading brands in withstanding the typical force a horse might experience. So apart from horse boots, what else do you make? We make a full line of saddle pads, girths, horse boots and accessories. We even make fly protection as well. Are you working on anything new? Yes! We’re so excited to bring out our latest line of jump boots – the Bionic Hybrid Performance range. We’ve been looking for a way to blend the traditional look of a leather boot with the high- tech features of a modern performance jump boot. We developed a new technique for embedding a high carbon protective shield into a specially molded outer shell. The result is stunning – and offers showjumpers the opportunity to have a custom look without a hefty price tag. Our hybrid boot comes in five colors - Black, Brown, Slate Blue, Racing Green and Bordeaux. We’ve chosen a mix of nubuck and finely pebbled leather tech material treated to withstand a lot of wear and tear. The carbon finish on the protective shields complements the rest of the boot for a sophisticated look. The Packaging for the boots is pretty spectacular too. The boots were so great that they deserved an amazing box! We had been toying with the idea of how to convey tradition and technology in one package and came up with the idea of using a half horse/ half robot. Our graphic designer worked to first render the image, then built each piece of the robotics and overlaid them. The box also has a magnetic closure to carry on the high-tech theme. We definitely wanted to go out on a limb and get a little wild with it. It seems that being wild and going against the grain is a theme for the brand. What's next for Majyk Equipe? We hope so! We’re proud to have pioneered a lot of the changes that mean better choices for our horses. We just upgraded our website this month (www.majykequipe.com) and we’re continuing to work with most of the leading national web sites. We’re also available in Dover stores this year and our line is selling in Europe and Australia. Thanks for talking with EQluxe Of course – it’s our favorite magazine! equipe with Majyk Equipe

| W23 36 Introduce yourself Hello! I’m Chloe Carabasi. I’m an actress, model, influencer and stunt rider living in Burbank, CA. I have been a proud (and crazy) hore girl since ‘92! Tell our readers about how your horse girl journey got started. I grew up on the east coast, in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. I came out of the womb loving horses even though no one in our family rode. My mom loves horses and animals too, but she never got the chance to ride when she was young, so she supported me in starting lessons when I was 6 years old at a local hunter/jumper barn. I very quicky fell in love and started competing in local shows. I then got into polo when I was around 12 years old and joined an Interscholastic team at Valley Forge Military Academy (I didn’t attend school there, but since they were an all-boys school at the time, they allowed outside girls to join the polo team!). I did both polo and jumping for a few years, but as I became more and more competitive in polo, I focused mostly on that. I then attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX and played on their women’s Intercollegiate polo team for the 4 years while I was an undergrad. It was an absolute blast and I highly recommend riding horses in college even for a club team. After graduation I moved to LA and found my CA polo family at HYT Polo in Burbank at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. A year later, I got my first horse Striker. About 3 years ago, I decided to start taking jumping lessons again because I missed it so much. After a lot of trial and error, I finally found my amazing trainer, Jackie Sebastian out of the Los Angeles Equestrian center, and am amazing OTTB jumper to show. Polo and jumping have my heart and I’m hopeful that I will be able to continue to compete in both disciplines! You are quite an accomplished rider having ridden in multiple disciplines tell us about that. Thank you! I think horses are just absolutely incredible animals with so many different skill sets to offer us humans in collaboration with them. I’ve always firmly believed in the saying “always a student, never a master,” especially when it comes to horses. Not only are there so many different disciplines out there, but feature

also every individual horse itself is unique. I love expanding my knowledge as a horse-woman and learning about different disciplines. Like I mentioned, my main disciplines that I focus on for competition are show jumping and polo, but I also love trail riding, I have trained in mounted archery and hope to start a club here in Burbank, and I would love to also dabble in some western disciplines like reining and cutting. I just love to learn and there is an endless abyss when it comes to new things horses can teach us ☺ I think we, as equestrians, should have an open mind and be willing to learn from one another and strive to treat each other with kindness and respect. How did you get into stunt riding? I sort of fell into it to be honest! A friend of mine who I know through polo is a very accomplished stunt man and equestrian. He heard about a job where they were looking for a stunt double for a famous actress who needed to be able to ride really well. He knew I fit the physical aspects needed for the job and knew my riding abilities well, so he put me up for it and I ended up getting it. Once I did that job and proved myself and my skills as a rider, it lead to more work through word of mouth! I’m very grateful to work as a stunt rider when the opportunity presents itself, but my focus is more on acting and being an actress who can do my own stunts, if that makes sense. For those who are not in the know, You did a pretty high profile commercial where you were stunt riding bareback in a dress through the streets of downtown, riding horses up stairs etc. Tell how this opportunity came to be and the prep work you had to do for the shoot itself. I got this job through recommendation by a friend, and it turned out to be amazing! I doubled for Zendaya in a Lancôme perfume commercial. It was such an amazing experience with the most beautiful andalusian stallions where I had to ride bareback at a gallop in a dress, through the streets of downtown LA, Griffith Park, and even up the ACTUAL stairs of LA city hall. We shot everything on location (no green screen at all) which was pretty wild because when else are you going to be able to gallop a horse down a downtown street and over the freeway?! We did a lot of prep before the shoot to train myself and the horses and get us all comfortable with what was being asked of us. For this job, I can confidently say that the safety and comfort of the horses was of the utmost importance, so every precaution was taken to ensure that. I have all the behind-the-scenes goodness and the actual commercial posted on my Instagram if anyone would like to check it out. I was actually lucky enough to be asked to double for Z again for a new version of the commercial that we shot this last winter where I got to use my jumping skills! That is also posted on my insta ☺ And finally, I also just wrapped on another amazing job that I can’t quite talk about yet, but this time I get to do more awesome equestrian stunts but ALSO be the lead actress! That’s the dream. I’ve been able to combine my love for horses and performance in such a cool way that has made for a very fun and unique career path in Hollywood, and I’m super grateful! Now that you’re show jumping, what are Chloe Carabasi’s plans for her horse girl future? I have an amazing 14 y/o OTTB mare named Kiwi that is a retired polo pony and turned out to be an amazing jumper! My goal is to do the California show circuit with her next year in the 1.0m, and hopefully move up to the 1.10m. And qualify for the USHJA Vegas Nationals again in 2024! I qualified and showed this year, and it was such a blast. I really love showing. I also plan to continue to play polo with HYT Polo at LAEC and at Will Rogers polo club in the Pacific Palisades, and hopefully compete in some more women’s tournaments. Eventually, I’d like to have my own string of polo ponies and a high-level jumper. Just have to book a bunch more acting work in the meantime! I know I sound like a broken record, but I really am so grateful for what I have right now. I have the best and most supportive barn families in both polo and jumping, and the most amazing horses- Striker- my heart horse, who is 22 and will be with me forever, Mirage- my 5 y/o OTTB mare who is in training to be my next competitive polo pony, and Kiwi- my OTTB jumper mare. I’m so lucky to be surrounded by such cool people and horses and not a day goes by where I don’t count my blessings! I for sure have goals I want to achieve in my future equestrian pursuits, but I also try to remember the importance of staying present and being grateful for what I have right now ☺ Being that it’s the season of giving, do you have any special charities you would like to give a shout out to? Yes! the Polo Pony Rescue 501c3 is an organization that provides a safe haven for older retired polo ponies to be rehomed or live out their lives in safety and comfort when they have nowhere else to go. The organization does amazing work and like most rescues, can always use support so that they can continue to provide top level care and a safe landing for their rescues. Holiday Giving Every year we join together and celebrate the season. This year, let’s help Skydog to do same. Twenty years ago if you were to have asked Clare Staples what she would be doing today I’m not sure her answer would be running a 9000 acre wild horse sanctuary in Bend, Oregon. In fact, she’d most likely laugh and say “20 years from now?” then laugh again. This former sociallite turned her party into a meaningful journey reuniting American wild horse and burro families torn apart and providing them a safe landing.
