Kangra Museum of Art

T he presence and patronage of various kings who ruled in the
Kangra Valley is known t o have influenced and pat ronised t he
now-famous Kangra paintings. Raja Sansar Chand ( 1775 - 182 3),
who ruled t he Kanga Valley, was one of t hese kings. At t he age of
2 0, he attracted plenty of talented artists from Guler's court .
During his reign, he was a generous patron who helped art and
culture flourish.
Paintings depicting Radha and Krishna, Buddha, and focal
themes of prurient feelings began to rise af ter the decline of
Basohli Paintings in the mid-eighteenth century. Under the
umbrella of Pahari paintings, the Kangra school of art arose from
the depth of background and subjects.
T his style of painting arose in Guler state, a small hill near the
lower Himalayas, as a result of influences from the Kashmiri
Mughal painting.

Kangra miniature paintings are distinguished by their naturalistic
and varied fauna and fauna, such as trees, creepers, and hills,
