A Temple Trail in Himachal Pradesh
Dharamshala has always been bestowed with the title “the land of spirituality”. Even before the
Lama established his presence in the valley, Dharamshala and its surrounding environs have been
the stronghold for spirituality.
For those that want to venture into the world of spirituality in the hills, a temple trail around our
resort in Himachal Pradesh is the way to go. Most of these temples are within driving distance,
some are best experienced on a Himachal trek around our resort in Palampur. Here are some
temple trails that you can experience on a trip to Himachal.
Temples Off The Beaten Path
One of Rakkh’s best Himachal treks is our trek to the Dibnu Mata temple, a local temple in the
adjourning village of Ghamrota. This trek will test your stamina, as you cross the village
Ghamrotha and the pine forest. Stop by to visit the temple and admire the panorama that greets
you. During winters, you can also take part in a Himachal snow trek that our resort in Palampur
organizes, when the temple and indeed the entire village is blanketed in white snow.
The Dorzong Monastic Institute is another intricate monastery located at the foothills of the
mighty Dhauladhars and is a few hour’s trek away from our resort in Palampur. This trail takes you
through dense pine and deodar forests across meandering streams. Once at the Institute, you
can get an insight into the lives of the Buddhist students and monks residing there. An
unforgettable experience that takes you through quintessential Himachal!
One of the most popular temples in the region is the Gadh temple, another temple that involves
a trek. The Gadh temple is dedicated to the ‘Bhaybhanjanaya’ deity, one of the incarnations of
Goddess Durga. ‘Gadh’ means small fortress or citadel and is named after the small fortress/
citadel dating back to the old kingdom of Kangra, which is located at the top of the hill. Legend
has it that the fortress derives its strength from the temple and was immortal as long as the deity
was given her worship every day.
Day Excursion Temple Trail
If you wish to step out of our resort in Himachal Pradesh and explore the spiritual wonders of
Dharamshala, you may actually find yourself overwhelmed with the number of temples,
monasteries and even churches. Here’s a short list of places you must visit:
Norbulingka Institute:
The Norbulingka Institute is a center that took inspiration from the Norbulingka Palace in Tibet,
the summer residence of the Dalai Lama. The institute was designed to be a center for learning
Tibetan art and culture. Norbulingka Institute, much like Rakkh Resort, leads by example when it
comes to self sustenance and local community involvement. It currently empowers over 300
Tibetans to follow their roots. All income generated from the sales of the artwork and accessories
directly go back into the institute where the staff and members then receive special benefits.
Baijnath Temple
The famed Baijnath temple is one of the oldest temples in the region, dating back to the 13th
century. The temple was a result of merchants looking for a way to commemorate lord Shiva, one
of the most celebrated gods of the Hindu pantheon.. The temple complex features a multitude
of inscriptions on the walls with detailed accounts of mythology and the region around the
temple. The temple complex itself is built in the Nagara style, an architectural format that is
commonly present throughout North India. For a slice of ancient history that still remains quaint
and charming, add this to your list of places to see in Dharamshala.
Masrur Rock Cut Temples
The magnificent rock cut temples at Masroor and the impressive Kangra Fort make an excellent
day out for guests staying at Rakkh, who wish to familiarise themselves with some of the area’s
most impressive architectural heritage.Said to be more than 1200 years old, the Masroor temple
complex is associated with several legends from the great epic Mahabharata. There are 15 richly
carved temples in all, but alas many suffered extensive damage during the massive earthquake in
1905. They are the only temples of their kind in Northern India.
