to inspire people. In any case, to do that requires an advanced comprehension
of the travelers inspirations.

2.0 DESTINATION BACKGROUND
The Cameron Highlands is named after William Cameron, a British explorer
and geologist appointed by the then colonial government in 1885 to map out
the border region of Pahang-Perak. Cameron reported having seen a plateau of
4,400 to 4,500 ft. above sea level at an altitude approximately 6000 ft. (1,800
m), and the temperature fell between 8C and 25C. But Cameron has at that
time has not being labeled on his finding on the map. In the 1920’s, a synthesis
of studies from subsequent expeditions eventually established plateau position.
So Cameron Highlands has been found. It was not completely built until 1925
when it was then proposed as a hill resort by Sir George Maxwell.
Cameron Highland’s popularity then developed during the colonial period
when British planters realized the ability of their fertile mountain slopes to grow
tea, which would then be a coveted commodity. In 1929, a tea plantation that
is now the popular Boh Tea Plantation began by John Archibald Russell, who
was the son of a British administrative official. The Cameron Highlands is still
home to several tea plantations, which it is still being the largest tea-producing
area in Malaysia. The area is also popular with many farms as a major supplier
of legumes and vegetables to both Malaysia and Singapore, and it is one of the
top tourist destinations in Malaysia.
Cameron Highlands’ mountain resort was a paradise for the British who had
been stationed in Malaya during the colonial period. It offered relief from the
tropical climate which was hot and humid. A variety of them have chosen to
make it their retirement home, setting up bungalows and mansions with its
temperate climate.
The British Army’s presence in Tanah Rata was high. During the 1960s,
there was the emergency era when the rag tag communist army tried to
destabilize and take over the government. By 1971, the former military hospital
of the British Army was now turned into a Roman Catholic convent and it is still
stand on the main street overlooking the hill. The narrow road to the Highlands
was extended and improved from year of 1896 to 1902. In the meantime,
further surveys were performed to determine the area’s actual plateau. Sir
2
George Maxwell visited the highlands in 1925, and planned to build the present
area of Tanah Rata and Brinchang into a Hill Station.
Around 1926 to 1931, some areas were designated accordingly for its
various functions such as Department of Agriculture, Township, and Residential
Sites, Service Areas, National Park, General Administration, and Recreational
Areas. There was more interest in improving Cameron Highlands after the
Japanese invasion, but development was slowed in the 1960s because of
communist rebellion which a time known as the “Malayan Emergency”. The Hill
Station was carefully built into a successful resort when the fierce fight was
declared to be over.

2.1 Cameron Highlands Geography
Cameron Highlands is among Pahang’s 11 constituencies. The district
covers an area of 712 square kilometers (275 sq. mi), and consists of three
townships and five settlements. They are all nestled at elevations ranging from
800 meters (2600 ft.) above sea level to 1,603 meters (5,259 ft.). Over 1,000
meters (3,300 ft.) above sea level, about 75 percent of the division is situated
on the Main Range (Banjaran Titiwangsa). The high humidity makes it no dry
seasons at all. The wettest months in Cameron Highlands are in October
through November and “driest” period is January through February.
Geographically the resort is situated on Peninsular Malaysia's highland “spine”.
3
It owes its present standing to its high altitude position (generally between 800
meters (2,600 ft.) and 1,603 meters (5,259 ft.) above sea level). The retreat
contains eight mountains. They are Gunung Batu Brinchang (2,031metres
(6,663 ft.), Gunung Berembun (1,840 meters (6,040 ft.), Gunung Irau
(2,091meters (6,860 ft.), Gunung Jasar (1,696 meters (5,564 ft.), Gunung
Mentigi (1,563meters (5,128 ft.), Gunung Perdah (1,576 meters (5,171 ft.) and
Gunung Siku (1,916 meters (6,286 ft.). Mount Swettenham (1,961 meters
(6,434 ft.) stands on its border with Kelantan. There is a radio and television
station at the top of Gunung Batu Brinchang. It was designed in the early
1950’s by British and there is the mossy forest close to the radio and television
station. The trail to the forest starts from the Tea Plantation in Sungei Palas
Boh. Getting to the cloud forest by road takes around 15 minutes.

Compared to the other Malaysian hill stations, the Cameron Highlands is
unique in that it is drained by three river systems with several tributaries (in
total of 123). Their peaks serve as the Sungai Pahang and Sungai Perak water
catchment. Overall, much of the retreat remains forest was estimated to be 71
percent. Jungle trails take visitors to quiet spots, waterfalls and indigenous
villages. Most tracks start in Tanah Rata and there are more than ten paths to
choose from. Some routes can take as long as five hours to cover depending on

3.0 DESTINATION ANALYSIS OF
3.1 TOURISM MOTIVATION
Motivation is the desire to take actions or circumstances leading to a
holiday which helps visitors to fulfill their motivation for tourism. As well,
tourism motivation is a widely utilized definition of push and pull variables.
External tourism motivations can influence visitors and inspire them to choose
them. Travel destinations tend to attract potential visitors and this place can
inspire tourists to develop and visit motivation. The quest for the motivations of
tourists is also related to the item of interest that they have selected. Early
attraction factors generate a desire that can lead to personal frustration when
the desire is not satisfied.
Based on the 2018 LIEW EE PENG report, found that Cameron Highland's
tourist motivation is leisure. This means most of the tourist that travel there
was because they want to have leisure time for relaxation. This is also
demonstrated by tourist arrivals at Cameron Highland. It shows high tourism
arrivals between Friday and Sunday, and even during school holidays all
through March, May, and December. This proves the pleasure of travelers to
Cameron Highland. The report also mentions the best time to visit Cameron
Highlands during the off-peak season. During school, weekends, and public
holidays the Cameron Highlands are usually crowded. We suggest you also visit
Cameron Highlands on weekends to visit the famous Brinchang Night
Market.Malaysia has Malaysia's "highlands," where cooler temperatures never
exceed 25 degrees Celsius can be enjoyed. The 2018 LIEW EE PENG report also
mentions that Cameron Highlands is well-known with agro-tourism and cool
destinations in Malaysia.
The climate in Malaysia is seen as equatorial. Thus the weather is usually
very hot and damp during the whole year, especially in major cities. Cameron
Highlands offers tourists a pleasant escape from the folly of town and tropical
sun. This motivates visitors to visit Cameron Highland, who enjoys nature and
the cool environment. According to the Cameron Highland Travel Page,
attractions are of the form of heritage and climate and serenity and relaxation
8
at the Cameron Highland. In addition to the combination of the natural and
cultural resources of Cameron Highlands, this special location provides an
unforgettable experience for all those who are willing to visit Malaysia.
Besides, the tourism they choose is also because they wanted to escape from
city life. They wanted to spend a few days free of noise and air pollution,
relaxing and refreshing themselves. One of the key factors in the tourism
industry's success today was the satisfaction of tourists. Their high level of
satisfaction plays a crucial role in determining the possibility of future visits.
This also strengthens tourists' tendency to recommend that others visit the
tourist destination.
Agro-tourism is a type of tourism that is based on nature that has recently
become popular. Based on the report, numerous factors encouraged tourists to
make a holiday destination of agro-tourism. The highest motivating factor for
tourists to make their choice was their biggest similarity and interest in
nature. The tea plantations are the main attractions of Cameron Highlands. Tea
plantations carpet the valleys in a thin layer of tea leaf green-yellow, and most
of them are open to tourists and visitors to buy tea bags and watch the workers
picking tea, and enjoy a cup of tea with scones simmering.
The four most popular are the Boh Tea Plantations Tea Plantation in Habu,
Boh Tea Plantation in Sungai Palas tea, Cameron Valley Tea Plantation in
Ringlet to Tanah Rata road, and Cameron Valley Tea Plantation in Kuala Terla.
In addition, in Malaysia, the Cameron Highlands is the only destination for
commercial production and harvesting of strawberries. Strawberry farms in
Cameron Highlands are nearly everywhere and are open to tourists, making
them a major tourist attraction. Local supply farms and jam and tarts at an
affordable price. In strawberry fields, Tourist has the possibility to select their
strawberries. Table 1 has show attraction make tourists motivate to visit.

Table 2 : SWOT analysis
3.2.1 STRENGTH
1. Climate
Cameron Highlands is very famous because of its calm, cold weather.
Throughout the year Cameron Highlands is experiencing one of the most
perfect conditions for a holiday that draws tourists from other states' towns and
cities. Throughout the year Cameron Highlands experiences moderate
afternoon temperatures. This can be cooler during the Cameroon vacation
seasons that happen on school holidays. That's because there are a lot of cars
and people during those hours that directly contribute to the local city's air
temperature.
19
2. Agrotourism
Agro-tourism is a new tourism product based on the agricultural attraction
introduced in Malaysia. Cameron Highlands is Malaysia's largest agricultural
upland resort area. The cool climate, farms and nature make Cameron
Highlands a popular tourist destination. Agri-tourism has been one of Cameron
Highlands' main economic sectors.
3. Beautiful landscape
Cameron Highlands is well known for its significant natural scenery, which
can draw more visitors every year to come there. Mossy Forest and BOH
plantation farm are among the places of choice for visitors to enjoy the natural
scenery.
4. Provide 3 and 4 stars hotel
In Cameron Highlands there are many accommodation centers which have
placed high quality hotel units in the area. This makes it easier for travelers to
find the accommodation or hotel in which they are most interested. Hotel
classes are also among three to four star hotel classes located in Cameron
Highlands. It will therefore surely provide sufficient satisfaction and enjoyable
experience for tourists arriving there, especially travel to Cameron Highlands.
5. Salubrious and cool mountain-top location
Cameron Highlands is one of Malaysia's areas with highland tropical
climates. The annual average temperature is about 18 degrees centigrade.
Cameron Highlands set a low to date record in February 1978 with a
temperature of 7.8 degrees centigrade. The humidity in Cameron Highlands is
very high, since Cameron Highlands is situated in the highlands. The Cameron
Highlands dry season usually starts in October and November, while the
slowest moisture is recorded in February.
20
3.2.2 WEAKNESS
Key problems include a demand ready for goods and a shortage of the right
resources and manpower to execute a effective marketing campaign. The
profitability of sharing is minimal for each person, since the project involves the
entire society. This acts as a disincentive since other sources of income are
necessary to satisfy the family's needs. Their nomadic way of life remains in
charge of the corporate routine of 9-5. Though most respondents were able to
speak the national language, most respondents were not able to speak English.
The environmental concern that needs to be tackled is the systemic waste
scarcity in which most households conduct open burning to dispose of their
waste. Recycling is still in the introductory phase, where small traders come to
the village to purchase used paper, glass bottles, and tin cans. In some remote
residential areas public facilities , particularly public transport, are scarce.
Because the region is mountainous, some areas have no access to
telecommunications signals which make it difficult in emergency times.
Therefore the distribution of knowledge between JHEOA and the public causes
a lot of harm. As to the limited food possibilities available in this region. This is
because there is only food available which is that to the residents of this town.
3.2.3 OPPORTUNITY
Focusing solely on the tourism sector of indigenous peoples would provide
opportunities for domestic and foreign recognition of this product. As in
Australia and New Zealand, where this type of tourism has gained worldwide
popularity, Malaysian tourism products can also be used to give this culture an
economic advantage, with its distinctive signature. Product development would
bring stronger links between the community and other organizations in terms
of new demand for related tourism activities. Entrepreneurship will also
encourage the growth of the small cottage industry to meet new demands for
individuals within the community. The rise in foreign investors has contributed
to the economic growth of the country, especially in the Cameron Highlands .
21
Their presence has led to new areas being expanded to act as tourist centers
and other economic centre. Employment opportunities will therefore be
provided for the locals, thereby reducing the problem of community
unemployment.
3.2.4 THREAT
Such challenges may include globalization and commercialisation of the
economy. In order to meet new demands and ensure sustainable output this
will affect the reality and essence of the community. Deforestation has the
potential to rid the city of its rich fauna and flora ecosystems, as it needs more
land growth and agricultural housing. Worker harassment is another issue
which needs to be addressed seriously. Some of the respondents said they
didn't get paid, paid low and had to work long hours. Natural disasters such as
landslides can easily occur, as some of the wooded areas have weakened the
area's soil structure. Competition with other areas of beauty spots is also a
constraint This is because there are many areas and environments close to
Highlands like Sabah for example, so tourists are encouraged to select a better
tourist location.
22
3.3 TOURISM TRENDS
Through the development of tourist attractions and infrastructure,
alongside promoting and marking efforts, communities are positioning their
exceptional resources so as to engage guests and prod economic growth. While
the travel industry spending is positively on the ascent, vacationer goals despite
everything need to seek a limited measure of guest dollars. While the
consumers are seeking new experiences, the technology is changing how
advertisers work, and global trends like environmental change are inciting
numerous brands to reconsider how they oversee and showcase their goals.
3.3.1 Solo Travel Trends
While solo travel has consistently been well known, it's getting more
available and while that’s still the case for many, more and more people are
choosing to strike out on their own. With the assistance of applications
permitting solo traveller to meet new individuals in urban areas around the
globe. In Cameron Highland it tends to be a solo travel and these days the
visitor love come to Cameron Highland as a solo travel. Some simply want to
travel without the distraction of a companion and some are travel to relax,
make another experience, find new friends and do a research.
3.3.2 Leisure Travel Trends
Leisure travel out used to be a family undertaking or something that
couples attempted together. As we can see, Cameron Highland is famous with
leisure tourism trends. Because Cameron Highland are also suitable for group
of tourist. Other than that, Cameron Highland also can be attract for newlyweds

Highland to see honey bee and tea plant by their own self. Other than that, the
main attraction there is the strawberry farm and people can get experience to

There is the top trends in the tourism technology. By using the social media
and mobile, the place gonna be viral and people will know about the place.
Another tech-based travel trend is the social media and applications to plan and
share trips. The travelers are progressively utilizing these devices to trade
information, resources, and recommendations. The business is excited about
this trends, leveraging the Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, as well as niche
travel platforms like TripAdvisor, to provide exposure to destinations and

Highland and buy a dozen of tea and honey then they bring it back to their
cities and sell it. However, the concept of bleisure travel has become
increasingly relevant among the tourism trends. Sometimes, people are from
the outside are travelling for a work decides to engage in tourism on their
downtime; in other cases, a company may arrange for tourist activities on work
trips as a perk. Many of people are visit the Cameron Highlands buy a lot of tea,
honey, cactus plant, cloth and etc for their friends and relatives.

3.3.6 Healthy and Organic Food Trends
Healthy food and the kind of fare consumed by tourists used to be
antonyms in the minds of many travelers, with holidays traditionally
representing a chance to break one’s diet and indulge in forbidden treats. In
Cameron Highland people can get the organic tea and CH also has the organic
farm which is Terra Organic Farm and Red Earth Living. Mostly elderly people
or Chinese people love to visit this farm and must buy the healthy and organic
food. The present explorers realize that heavenly and nutritious are not select
ideas. Demand for excellent cuisine with a view to better nutrition is driving
new tourism trends. The cutting edge traveler needs to realize that the food
they're eating is as solid as it is heavenly. The natural food development is
likewise influencing the travel industry trends, with more diners and inns
offering natural choices. Other extraordinary weight control plans are
additionally spoken to.
3.3.7 Experiential Food Trends
Some portion of this involves food tourism, where travelers look for one of
a kind eating and drinking activities. In Malaysia, experiential food is the
famous trends because we love to taste the unique food. Example, last year we
our countries are famous with “Boba Tea” and a lot of restaurant are open to
sell that drinks water. Once considered to be of interest to only a few, or
possibly even elitist by some, today the appreciation and search for good food
and drink is fully mainstream. In Cameron Highlands, people or tourist may
drink the tea and eat the fresh strawberry and honey directly at their farm. In
tourism, food are being one of the reason people to travel and spend their
money only for food. By seeing only in SocMed about the best food also can
make people are excited to go and willing to travel for taste the food. Such as,
chocolate strawberry, eat cake and tea at the tea farm and etc can make
people interest to visit that place.

4.0 SUGGESTION AND RECOMMENDATION
4.1 BUILD MORE PARKING SPACE
There is terrible traffic congestion here during weekends and public
holidays and although we have many hotels, there is lack of car parks. There is
lack of parking lot provided by the area of Cameron Highland itself. The
community also former tourist had complaint about having difficulties to find
parking every time they went to Cameron Highland especially on weekend and
holiday. They would rather to stay at home than have to face the traffic
congestion during weekend. It is very recommended that government or the
manager of the place provide more parking lot in order to make it easier for
tourist to park their vehicles safely. This is important because most people will
consider going to one place if they know that the place would have a traffic jam
problem and lack of parking lot. Issues such as these could cause people to shy
away from Cameron Highlands and to stop coming here for vacations. By
overcome this problem, it is not only gives advantage to the tourist but it also
give good impression about the place.
4.2 PROVIDE FREE PARKING
Traders and visitors here expect that the government will be willing to
study about the parking charges on weekends. The Cameron Highlands District
Council (MDCH) decided to enforce daily parking charges seven days a week
last October. According to those surveyed, this has had an effect on the
economic profit of sellers and businesses here. In addition, there is fear that
the number of foreign tourists visiting Cameron Highlands will increase. The
government should have free parking on weekends or reduce the cost of fee for
parking. That is because most of the tourists arriving here are over the
weekend. Through having free parking or a small charge, it is also a way to
provide visitors who come to visit a nice experience. This will help to gain good
reviews from tourists and will encourage many travelers to visit Cameron
Highland. In comparison, the percentage for these visitors to come back is
strong.
26
4.3 IMPROVE ROAD QUALITY
In order to attract more tourist to comes by the Cameron Highland, firstly,
the management need to improve the road at Cameron Highland area such as
at Tanah Rata. The regular ten-minute trip from Tringkap to Brinchang here
can usually take up to two hours on weekends and public holidays due to
constant hold-up. Tourists usually travel to celebrated tourists' destinations,
and even bazaars and retailers at Capitol Hill Station that lead to motorists got
stuck in significant ties with a median of 10,000 vehicles reported returning to
Cameron Highlands every day during long holidays. The government will
therefore take an effort to fix the issue of traffic jams in the region such as the
amplification of the breadth of the road. This is because this problem can be
the cause of the Cameron highlands is less visited by tourists within the country
or outside the country.
4.4 HIRE FOREIGN WORKERS
Tourists like to come here to pick their own fruits and vegetables. Farmers
operators need more hands to collect and pack fruits and vegetables for sale as
souvenirs for tourists coming to Cameron Highland. An amnesty programme for
foreign workers conducted in 2011, had led to many of them running away,
leading to a shortage of labour at vegetable farms and causing the livelihoods
of farmers to be affected. Shortage of labour at vegetable farm & cause
livelihoods of farmers affected. Many farmers on the highlands faces a shortage
in farm help. Operators facing labour shortages have proposed to the
government to increase the number of foreign workers in order to helps in the
process of picking and packing the vegetables and fruits there. They also could
help in handling the farms to reduced the burden of local farmers and operators.
The increase in the number of labour would ensure the operations at the place
runs smoothly.

4.5 ADVENTURE ACTIVITY
The development of flying fox is also suggested. This is because flying fox
is the most exciting sport for fun and enjoyment at every age of people. It's
really famous among the Malaysians. Besides enjoying the beauty of nature
with fruits and vegetables, tourists also have the opportunity to experience the
flying fox. This adventurous activity is not only fun but may make Cameron
Highland one of the most prestigious places in the future. The hill at Cameron
Highland is really high and well placed for adventure. It should have more
effect as they have a stunning view from the peak of the hill. This activity could
be added in the adventure activity package. This package could be a booster or
motivation for tourist to visit Cameron Highlands. So, it is very recommended
and suggested if Cameron Highland willing to build flying fox there.
4.6 PROPER PLANNING FOR DEVELOPMENT OF CAMERON
HIGHLANDS.
While the local community do not oppose development, they hope that the
authorities exercise proper planning and not allow projects to be developed
indiscriminately and to their whims and fancies. New farms are sprouting up
everywhere, which is a good thing but the locals ask that the businesses do not
overdo it to avoid further landslides from occurring. Many villagers were still
haunted by the August 2011 landslide at the village that caused seven villagers
to be buried underneath earth, rocks and mud washed down from a nearby cliff.
The environment should be preserved at all costs and must not cause further
damage to the ecosystem as this can lead to various disasters. There should be
proper planning in everything as not to further affect the environment. So, for
the sake of safety especially for the local community that lives in the area of
Cameron Highland, development must be done properly and under control.
Other than that, it is advised that all of projects to be monitored and already
been studied on the positive and negative effects of each project.
28
5.0 CONCLUSION
The Cameron Highlands can regain its popularity as one of the most
popular tourism sites that promote activities at higher altitudes and cooler
temperatures in Malaysia. The tourism activities that should be promoted in the
Cameron Highlands are along the lines of cultural heritage and natural
environment themes. The expansion of mass tourism should be curbed.
Therefore, an approach is needed to continuously reduce negative impacts.
Local communities and Non-Government Organization (NGOs) support the idea
that agro-ecotourism can boost the economic value of Cameron Highlands and
the country.
However, this is a huge challenge with illegal and uncontrolled land clearing
which has resulted in various environmental problems and issues such as soil
erosion and floods, and most importantly a change in the micro-climate. This
will lead to a negative impact on the entire ecosystem and ecotourism
businesses in Cameron Highlands, which are highly dependent on nature and
cool climates. There are a lot of tourism motivation factors in Cameron
Highland that attract tourists to come and have a vacation there.
There are also tourism trends that give opportunities to Cameron Highland
to get involved in those trends which make tourist indirectly go there. In order
to feel the great experience that has been spread worldwide, most of the
tourists did not want to be left behind. These factors have been the reason for
Cameron Highland to be well known until now.
