How can you help your child?
Help your child to:
Dress and undress without grown up help.
Manage own basic hygiene and personal needs including going to the toilet.
Let your child play with other children and encourage sharing and turn taking.
Talk with your child: Children make sense of their world by talking and listening.
They need you to talk with them and listen to them.
They will learn from your conversations together.
Give plenty of opportunities to allow your child to write.
Share books. Talk about the story and pictures.
Sing songs and rhymes.
Let your child draw: This will help your child develop fine motor skills.
Give plenty of opportunities to draw pictures with pencils, crayons etc., to help your child’s
pencil grip and pencil control. It is a good idea to write his/her name on each drawing.
Mathematics is all around us.
Please encourage your child to look for and talk about numbers within the environment.
Count the steps. What bus do you get? Look for door numbers.
Talk about colours and shapes.
Play games with them. Encourage turn taking.
Limit unsupervised technology and check what is being accessed on iPads, mobile phones etc.
For your information, the words considered to be for Reception ability are:
I and at it am
going
cat on no go into

Once your child settles, a reading book will be sent home regularly along with words/spellings.
Please ensure that you support your child with this.
School Uniform
In Reception we encourage school uniform as the children then have a sense of
belonging and community. (see parent handbook pages 13/14).
In Nursery, you are welcome to purchase a school fleece or jumper but we don't
advise the purchase of any expensive clothing - your children will get messy
playing and exploring with water, sand, glue and paints!
Please ensure ALL clothing is clearly named.
For all children - long hair must be tied back.
No earrings/retainers or nail varnish.
Sensible footwear must be worn (no open toed shoes or sandals).
We ask that Reception children have a school book bag (these can be purchased
from the school office) which will fit into their tray (we do not have any
additional storage space).
Book bags for Nursery are also helpful for putting letters/communication into
and for children to bring home their paintings etc.
P.E. Once children have settled into school a letter will be sent home explaining
the day of the week P.E. will take place and asking children to come to school in
their kits. See parent handbook for details.
Lunchtimes
Nursery children entitled to 30 hours need to bring a packed lunch (no nut based
products, chocolate, sweets, fizzy drinks) and pay the lunchtime charge.
Reception children can stay for a school packed lunch from their first day. A
menu (also on our website) informs you of the daily meal choices.
At present the Government continues with Universal Free School meals for
Reception aged children. Please apply for Free School meals if you are entitled as
you will also get other benefits.
Alternatively you may provide your child with a packed lunch or they may go
home for lunch with you - just let us know.
All Nursery and Reception pupils receive a free piece of fruit daily.
Plain water should be brought in to drink in a named plastic sports top bottle.
Curriculum and Learning
Children in Nursery and Reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.
Nursery is known as Foundation 1 and the Reception year as Foundation 2.
The two years follow a curriculum covering seven areas of learning:
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Physical Development
Communication and Language
Literacy
Mathematics
Understanding the World
Expressive Arts and Design
Through a range of child initiated and focused activities the children develop these
areas of learning. In Nursery they are supported by a key worker as well as the rest
of the Foundation Stage staff.
Children use the classroom as well as the outside area throughout the year. Please
ensure that they have appropriate clothing for all weathers. The children are
encouraged to use the outside area come rain or shine!
Mathematics
Incorporate the use of numbers in your daily language.
Use opportunities to count as much as possible and put numbers in order.
Identify numbers within the environment. By the end of Reception children
need to have a deep understanding of number 1-10 including recall of
number bonds. They should begin to do simple calculations using objects
and solve problems including doubling, halving and sharing.
Look for shapes all around you and discuss them.
Phonics and Reading
It is really important for us to work together to support your child’s acquisition of these
basic skills.
Once reading has been mastered a whole new world of knowledge
and learning opens up for your child!
Your child may have already experienced some phonics (sounds) if
they have attended a pre-school or our Nursery. We also ensure that lots of words are used
as labels around the rooms.
Please encourage your child to recognise signs, their name and common words in everyday
use.
During Nursery, children will begin to recognise their name and key letters/words as we
introduce sounds.
Throughout Reception, your child will have words to learn and books will be introduced.
Please talk about books,
look at the pictures and talk
about the characters
and potential story lines.
If you ever have any questions or concerns
about your child please speak to any member
of the Foundation Stage team who will be
happy to help.
