FROM THE PRESIDENT

2020 | 2021 ANNUAL REPORT VILLA JOSEPH MARIE 1
A little over four months ago, when the Villa Joseph Marie Board offered me the position of Interim
President, I accepted with excitement and joy. I felt called to accept the position for likely the very
same reasons that you attended Villa yourself, or enrolled your daughter(s) here, or give generously of
your time and resources to the VJM community. I was drawn to Villa because it is a faith-based family
devoted to empowering young women to lead lives of purpose and service. I was motivated by the belief,
embodied in our charismatic and humble Sisters of St. Casimir, that the world needs the moral leadership
of women more than ever. I learned that from the moment new Jems enter the door at Villa, they are
embraced as valued members of a holistic, nurturing, safe, welcoming, and values-driven community of
learning that challenges them to become their best selves. In small classes with personalized attention,
Jems have the opportunity to unself-consciously spread their wings, make mistakes, and learn in safety
and acceptance as they discern their calling and purpose. I could not be more grateful and honored to
lead a community such as this.

It is an exciting time at Villa, as we welcome our new 9th grade students and families, transfer students
from St. Basil and elsewhere, as well as new staff. The influx of new energy and ideas will make our
community stronger, more innovative, more vibrant, as diversity in an inclusive environment always
does. In my first few months, I have met the dedicated faculty and staff, the Sisters of St. Casimir who
support the school both on the Board and in their hearts and prayers, and parents, Alumnae, and
relatives of Alumnae who continue to sustain the school out of love for its Mission and out of gratitude
for the learning and growth community it provided for themselves and for their children. I have met
members of the VJM staff who have displayed their devotion to the Jems over many years of service, and
the newest members of our community who, like me, are learning the ropes -- not to mention how to get
from one end of the building to the other! I have been so impressed with the beautiful new Performing
Arts Center, and the breathtaking visage of the front of the school, especially at night. And my heart
finds its home in the Chapel, the spiritual center of the school, where we -- regardless of our particular
path of worship -- find a quiet space to reflect, find sanctuary on challenging days, remember what is
most important and what we feel most grateful for, refresh and renew our faith and our hope. Situated
in the heart of the convent where our Sisters of St. Casimir worshipped and served for many years, the
Chapel welcomes all and calls all to the higher purpose embodied in Mother Maria’s motto: Always more,
Always better, Always with love.

Most of you reading this have either attended VJM or have entrusted us with the education and care of
your daughters, a most sacred trust. Many of you also have given of your time and resources to help Villa
continue to thrive and offer a relevant, engaging, spiritually rich, and nurturing education that empowers
our girls to realize their full potential. This Annual Report is our way of thanking and honoring all of you.
With the gift of transparency, this Report illustrates the critical importance of your on-going support and
contributions to our community.

I look forward to partnering with all of you as we continue to
innovate at VJM to give our young women the support and
preparation they need to step boldly into the future. I am
excited to meet the Jems in the coming weeks and to welcome
new and returning members of the Villa family. Please do stop
by to say “hi.” I am always available for a chat over coffee or
at a VJM game!

Always with Love,

Dr. Karen Kenkel

FROM THE PRINCIPAL “Adaption is the key to survival”. This quote accurately sums up our 2020-2021 academic
year. Beginning our year with a laundry list of Covid guidelines and restrictions which,
2020 | 2021 ANNUAL REPORT VILLA JOSEPH MARIE 5subsequently, changed multiple times, the Villa community adapted and thrived during a
very uncertain time. The ability for our students and staff to join together during a global
pandemic, comfort one another in the loss of a Villa Jem, remain steadfast in an academic
structure that was fluid from in-person learning to times of virtual understanding, and re-
thinking and re-creating traditions and events that distinguish our Villa family are what
defined our year and our Mission.

As we look ahead to our 2021-2022 school year, we are reminded that our Villa community
is resilient and flexible and, above all else, that we can survive anything, together. While
we welcome our new year with some restrictions still in place, reflection on the past
year shows just how much traditions can grow and enhance all the wonderful benefits
a Ville education provides. We saw the implementation of new courses, offered 280 AP
exams across 21 content areas, presented new ideas and innovations to our Educational
programming committee, and investigated the creation of an Advisory period, which is
being piloted during the 21-22 school year. We afforded countless new memories with
twists on old practices: Ring Day ceremonies where parents became active participants,
placing the ring on their daughter’s hand; Guardian Galas where parents celebrated their
Senior daughters’ accomplishments; Hope-A-Thon dance marathons outside (on a rainy
day) to raise awareness and “hope,” LIVE musicals for adjusted audience capacities – a
feat no other school was able to accomplish; even Spirit Days on the soccer field with more
space than the gym ever provided. We held service opportunities from our homes, our
vehicles, and our campus and delivered immeasurable support to local sites which weren’t
quite ready to welcome back outside visitors. We played countless games and matches as
sports adapted to delayed season start dates. We entered the Basilica of Saints Peter and
Paul to celebrate the graduating Class of 2021.

As we move into our new school year, we look not only to survive, but to THRIVE as
we continue to grow in faith, education, and service to others. New courses have been
implemented, including Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, AP Music Theory 2,
Instrumental Music Theory 2, Ethics and Social Justice, and Honors Women in Theology.
Service opportunities have been rebuilt, both on and off campus. Our faith is being
renewed each day we follow Mother Maria’s path and Mission. We know this ability to
thrive is possible because of the support of all of you – our Alumnae, past and current
parents, students, faculty, and friends – whether you have been part of Villa for years or
are new to our community.

Thank you for helping Villa to adapt and survive. With your
continued help and working together, Villa will persevere and
thrive as the years move on.

Prayers,

Lauren Carr ’00

FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Bienvenida! Svieki! Willkomen! The languages of the world mirror the beauty and richness that
each culture brings to all creation. Likewise, the “language” of Villa Joseph Marie is a tapestry
2020 | 2021 ANNUAL REPORT VILLA JOSEPH MARIE 11of beautiful and unique threads that create a montage of images that are Villa’s nearly 90-year
history. This language is defined by the uniqueness of each individual that walks Villa’s halls and
the students’, faculty, parents’, and Alumnae commitment to the phrase, “Always more, Always
better, Always with love” — the culminating line and summary of Villa’s Mission Statement.

“Always more”… We welcome all faculty and staff members, students, and families for the
2021-2022 school year. In doing so, we embrace the opportunity to share with an ever-widening
community the Vision passed down to us by our Sisters of St. Casimir and the strength and
empowerment that is inherent to Villa’s environment.

“Always better”… An innovative selection of new courses has been added to the already-strong
curriculum for the new year and students continue to drive an ever-increasing variety of extra-
curricular activities. The various engineering classes continue to grow in enrollment, new
elective classes in Music and Theology, and new groups like No Place for Hate allow students to
pursue their passions within and beyond Villa’s walls.

“Always with love”… Villa is rich in spirit, with a strong sense of family and the greater
community. This spirit is a palpable expression of the sisterhood that connects the students
and Alumnae. Additionally, students annually contribute thousands of hours of service to those
in need, faculty and staff view their work as a call to ministry, and Alumnae volunteer for their
Alma Mater, ensuring that the Mission continues.

The 2020-2021 school year certainly tested the strength and resilience of the threads of these
words, given to us by the Venerable Mother Maria Kaupas. But, through it all, the incredible
support, flexibility, and dedication of the entire Villa Family ensured that Villa did not waver
in its dedication to Mission. “Always more, Always better, Always with love,” passed from each
generation of students to the next, is a seemingly simple and delicate message, yet it creates a
strong bond, informing every decision and embodying the essence of Villa Joseph Marie. These
are the words with which we look to the traditions of the past, welcome what touches us in the
present, and greet Villa’s bright future.

Sincerely yours,

Mary K. Smithson
Chair, Board of Directors

2020 | 2021 ANNUAL REPORT VILLA JOSEPH MARIE 22 Dear Fellow Alumnae,

FROM THE ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION As in years past, I proudly watched the success of our alma mater as the students, staff
and faculty navigated the challenges of this past year. Villa rose to the task and provided
a year filled with as much normalcy (and fun!) as possible for the students. Despite these
challenges, Villa has continued to work towards meeting the goals of its strategic plan
and the pursuit of excellence in education for the current and future generations of Villa
students. As Alumnae, it is my hope that we will continue to support these successes and
give whatever we can to ensure that Villa is there for many generations to come.

For the Alumnae Association, the 2020-2021 fiscal year was focused on continuing to
build our online community and connect with our Alum. While we were unable to hold
our in-person vendor fair, we held a virtual business bingo in which Villa businesses were
able to participate. The Women’s Empowerment Symposium, held virtually in February
2021, was, once again, an opportunity for Villa students, Alum, and our community to
learn and grow.

We continue to work to find new ways to connect with our Alumnae and we are grateful
for your ideas. We will build on the successes of the past few years and develop new ways
to connect to one another as we foster the engagement of our Alumnae. We continue to
link our Alumnae with the current student body through the mentorship program and
build Alumnae participation in our events throughout the year. If you have not already, we
hope you will join us!

As we hold our memories of Villa in our hearts, we continue to strive to be “Always more,
Always better, and Always with love.”

Warm regards, Alumnae, are you interested
in getting more involved?
