2019 | 2020 ANNUAL REPORT VILLA JOSEPH MARIE 1
“Why is this night unlike all others?” So begin the prayers for the Passover feast. This meal was celebrated at
the Kardish dinner table for the first time this past spring, as one of the six college students that arrived during
the early pandemic to live with us for two months was Jewish. We thoroughly enjoyed preparing the Seder meal.
I could paraphrase that line as I begin this letter:
“Why is this Annual Report like no other?” Of course, it was a year like no other. Most years, it is fairly
straightforward to author a letter to the Villa Community for inclusion in the Annual Report. As President of our
beloved Villa, I can gush with pride at the many accomplishments of our students, our dedicated faculty that instructs
them, and the committed staff that takes care of us all. This year, however, I had to review pre-Covid publications to
remember what life at Villa was like before mid-March. But, I am glad that I did, as there was much to celebrate.
The beginning of the 2019-2020 school year brought the opening of the new “jem” in the Villa crown — the
beautiful, state-of-the-art, 607-seat Performing Arts Center (PAC). It is simply spectacular in every way: physical
beauty, acoustically, technologically — a fitting tribute to all Villa women, past, present and future. As we were
unable to produce Legally Blonde: The Musical due to the lockdown this spring, it is unlikely that you have
experienced the space, yet. Please consider a visit to campus, as I would love to share it with you.
The educational offerings at Villa continue to improve. Last year, we were pleased to add additional challenging
courses that Villa students were requesting, including a new Engineering curriculum and several courses so
advanced that they had only one student registered. New clubs and teams included Future Business Leaders of
America and sailing, which achieved second place, overall, in the city! The ladies achieved their highest collective
marks ever on the AP exams, and the seniors achieved admittances to the best universities in the world, including
Harvard, Stanford, Penn, Cornell, Notre Dame — I could go on and on! Needless to say, I am so proud of the
education that Mrs. Carr and her amazing faculty deliver to the girls. It simply can’t be beat, at any price!
Speaking of Mrs. Carr, the faculty, and staff, I don’t think you could witness a more professional — and very
sudden — pivot to online learning as occurred this past March. Thankfully, we had adopted the Canvas learning
management system two years prior, and our teachers always are at the forefront of the latest teaching methods.
These assets allowed the complete switchover to online learning to be accomplished, literally, in a few days. The
girls had the same days of instruction as scheduled, received actual grades for the term, and the seniors had a live
graduation on the appointed day and time! I can’t begin to tell you the pure joy we all experienced welcoming the
seniors back to campus for a beautifully sunny morning on the soccer field, where they received their diplomas in
white gloved hands and sat with their families in painted 6’x6’ squares, surrounded on the perimeter by the faculty.
As you may have seen the line, we were “six feet apart, but always together!”
I write this having just completed our first month of full, five-day, in-person instruction for the new school year.
So far, so good. I also am happy to report that we welcomed the newly-installed Archbishop of Philadelphia, Nelson
Perez, to celebrate the school-opening Mass in the PAC on September 10 and the parents of our entire Junior class
for a beautiful Ring Day Mass, which highlighted a new tradition of parents placing the ring on their daughter’s
finger, on October 2. Each week, we are finding new way to flourish in our “new” normal of necessary precautions.
As much as I am happy about the challenges we have overcome and where Villa is today, I also am inspired by
the words that are heard and lived every day throughout our community — “Always more, Always better, Always
with love.” We have learned new ways to learn and to teach. We also have learned new ways to serve and support
each other and those around us. I am excited for the future of our girls, and I am excited to see what the future
will bring for the entire Villa community. We will continue to look for new educational opportunities for the girls,
whether in the classroom or after hours and off campus. New courses are
again being offered this year, and new clubs and service opportunities
are being planned, including a trip to trace Mother Maria’s footsteps in
Lithuania. Of course, we hope the conditions exist to continue to improve
the campus, as we still plan to complete the STEAM Hallway and Media
Center, utilizing the $1.5 million in state grant funds that were awarded to
Villa over the past few years.
I am grateful for your support of our beloved school, for your love
and the care you show for the girls, and for the very strong Mission that
guides our work, school and life.
Love and prayers,
Thomas A. Kardish

2019 | 2020 ANNUAL REPORT VILLA JOSEPH MARIE 3
Dear Villa Families,
This is one of my favorite Bible quotes and one I turned to countless times during the 2019-2020
school year. It is a promise that God is in control and that He has our well-being mapped-out for us
in ways that we cannot even imagine. This certainly was a comfort as we journeyed through the
year, completing a new Strategic Plan, beginning to train our staff, students, and families on Growth
Mindset, then rising to the challenges of Covid-19. With God’s help, and the support of countless
Alumnae, parents, Board members, faculty, and staff, Villa rose to those challenges this year.
As you know, development of Villa’s new Strategic Plan began in November 2018. Education
was a key component of the Plan, along with Development, Enrollment, Governance/Mission,
Finance/Facilities, and Marketing initiatives. Supported by research and data, Villa has adopted
the following goals for education:
1. Initiate a cyclical process for curriculum review to foster a greater sense of collaboration
among the academic disciplines and ensure our program prepares students for their next
educational journey.
2. Continue to develop and improve Villa’s curriculum offerings in technology over the
next three years, culminating with the creation of a stand-alone Technology department
and coursework.
The Board of Directors reviewed and ratified this plan in November 2019 with the understanding
that the strategic planning process will never be truly complete as we strive to provide the very
best opportunities for our girls. More information on the Strategic Plan, our goals, and strategies,
can be found at www.vjmhs.org/aboutvilla/strategicplan.
With the assistance of the Bucks County Intermediate Unit, Villa put the mental health of our
students at the forefront in 2019-2020. Adopting a Growth Mindset curriculum, Villa students and
staff began the process of understanding that their most basic abilities can be developed through
dedication and hard work and that a productive struggle can be more rewarding than the ultimate
outcome. Additionally, “stress-reduction” days in January and February allowed students the
opportunity during the school day to participate in activities such as art, yoga, and prayer, and led
the girls to find creative methods for reducing stress that can be used at Villa, at home, and beyond.
Truly, the implementation of both the Strategic Plan and Growth Mindset were part of God’s
overall plan for Villa for 2019-2020. Never in the history of Villa Joseph Marie were the themes
of collaboration and development of technology offerings from the Strategic Plan and the mental
health strategies introduced through Growth Mindset needed more! The mandated closure of
the school in March required creativity, whole person education, a commitment to looking at the
educational journey rather than the intended “end result,” and an acceptance of each student’s
— and teacher’s — unique circumstances as we adopted a virtual learning platform. The year
certainly looked very different than anyone could ever have anticipated, but dedication to our
Mission continued to drive us to be “Always more, Always better, Always with love.”
We began the 2020-2021 school year having planned, and planned
again, to welcome our Jems back to campus for in-person instruction.
Classrooms were modified to allow for social distancing. The class
schedule was changed to reduce the number of students in the hallway
at any given time. Cleaning and sanitizing procedures were restructured
to reduce the likelihood of Covid-19 or any contagious outbreak. And
now we must trust. We trust in each other to safeguard our health and
well-being. And we trust that, while we do not know the “end result,” that
God’s plan is better than any we could have written for ourselves.
Prayers,
Lauren Carr ’00

ADVANCEMENT PLANS
With Villa’s new Strategic Plan having been ratified by the Board of Directors in November
2019, Villa has begun working toward its newly established goals. Already, new course
offerings have been adopted for the 2020-2021 school year in keeping with our goals for
Education; Marketing was expanded to promote Villa as THE premier Catholic high school
that empowers women and prepares them for life post-graduation; and our Mission Statement
has been revised to ensure that the Catholic identity of Villa is lived by all stakeholders.
Momentum is building, as the very best opportunities for educational, spiritual, athletic,
artistic, and personal growth for a robust and diverse student body is assured.

Ally has been so blessed at Villa with great experiences, and wonderful
coaches, teachers and classmates - we had been looking for a way to give
back to Villa. With the EITC program we learned that we could greatly magnify
our normal donation. The process was not difficult - we did have to fund our
‘magnified’ donation up-front in 2019, but we then received a 90% tax credit,
which appeared in our PA tax refund the following April. Now almost all of
our family’s PA tax liability is being redirected to provide financial aid to girls
attending Villa. While we sometimes still wonder what is going on with those
Harrisburg budgets, we have peace knowing that our family’s PA tax dollars are
bringing girls closer to Christ through a solid Catholic education at Villa.

MOTHER MARIA KAUPAS
SCHOLARSHIP
2019 | 2020 ANNUAL REPORT VILLA JOSEPH MARIE 8 The Mother Maria Kaupas Scholarship was established in 2015 by
the Villa Joseph Marie Class of 1960, in celebration of the class's
55th reunion, to honor our school’s Foundress and to reward
students who emulate her virtues. This financial aid scholarship
provides four one-time $1,000 tuition awards to four Villa
students—one rising Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior—
who are passionate advocates and activists for positive change
in the areas of social justice, environment, science, medicine,
engineering, arts, literature, or culture.
Recipients of this scholarship are required to demonstrate and document their
commitment to their cause through submission of either an essay or a video
that captures their vision, awareness, and activism for their cause. Applicants
are encouraged to express their creativity in their submission, understanding
that the primary purpose is to demonstrate that they have committed
substantial time, energy, and resources to further their cause. Thank you to our
donors for helping us recognize and reward this fine work by our students.

Because of the education both my husband and I received, we have stressed education in

Julie Garrison ’21
Julie was chosen for her dedication to social justice and service. She has been involved
in many service opportunities, including the Haiti Immersion trip, volunteering at Pine
Run Nursing Home, Doylestown Hospital, and the Blessed Sarnelli House. In addition,
she holds an Executive Board position with CSC. She has been inspired by Mother
Maria’s example and aims to serve “with” others rather than “for” others.
Juliana Marino ’22
Juliana was chosen for her dedication to the community by emulating Mother Maria’s
motto: Always more, Always better, Always with love. She creates decorative wreaths
which are displayed for patients at Chandler Hall Assisted Living Facility in Newtown.
The wreaths Juliana creates are interchangeable with 20 different designs, celebrating
different seasons. The wreaths offer comfort to patients and their families throughout
the facility. Juliana’s video submission included testimonials from several Chandler Hall
executives, including the Clinical Director of Hospice and Palliative Care, the Senior
Director of Hospice and Palliative Care, the Director of Philanthropy, and the Executive
Director of Chandler Hall. All praised Juliana’s efforts and were grateful for her service.
Olivia Rueger ’23
Olivia was chosen for her dedication to engineering and robotics. She competes as part
of the Robotics team. Her team qualified for the state competition after only their first
meet this year. She parallels her love and dedication to promoting and encouraging
female involvement in engineering and robotics to Mother Maria’s commitment to her
faith and the Sisters of St. Casimir, seeing both as stepping stones to a greater purpose.
Lana Leiter ’24
Lana was chosen for her dedication to the field of science. She displays her knowledge
and love for science through participation in such programs as GlaxoSmithKline’s
Science in the Summer, Villa Joseph Marie’s annual Sciathlons, and Delaware Valley
University’s ISteam classes. She believes women have an important part in the future
of science and hopes to continue to spread awareness while encouraging others to take
interest in the field of science.

change was having to attend school virtually. I had no doubt out as much as they could. I know that everything we did last
that Villa would have this new virtual learning environment year was all new, and I believe that Villa handled it the best
under control, and they did not disappoint. Villa was capable they could.
of bringing a virtual learning environment to me as if I was
still in class with my teachers and classmates. Throughout Anna Schreiner ’21
this entire process, the teachers were very accommodating
with setting up personal conferences if I didn’t understand Virtual learning, as opposed to being in a classroom,
a lesson or pushing back due dates if I felt overworked in was tough, but I made it through it! Being virtual was great
other classes. In comparison to my brother’s struggle with education-wise; I was able to understand the material well,
learning online through his public school, Villa showed a even across the screen. It was fun seeing the different ways
complete opposite approach. Overall, both my parents and teachers shared information and conducted classes. My time
I were completely impressed by Villa and their preparations in school during quarantine went by smoothly, but I did miss
for virtual learning. It led to me to finish the year strong and being with my classmates and being able to talk with them
with confidence. Now, as a senior in high school, I am so face to face. In the end, though, my sophomore year ended
beyond fortunate to be able to come back to school and finish on a good note, for which I have Villa to thank!
my high school experience on a positive note.

Like the majority of private high schools, the greatest source of income
for Villa Joseph Marie is tuition. However, tuition does not cover the cost
of a student’s education at Villa. More than 15% of that cost is financed
through the generosity of donors, like you.
Through participation in Villa’s Annual Fund, Auction, Capital Campaign,
EITC program, and more, Villa Family and Friends are able to partner
with Villa Joseph Marie as we stride to fulfill our Mission to “empower
young women through faith, education, and service, doing so in the spirit
of ‘Always more, Always better, Always with love.’” With your help, Villa
Joseph Marie was able to serve our Jems in these ways...and more!

2019 | 2020 ANNUAL REPORT VILLA JOSEPH MARIE 17
Describing the day on which Srs. Maria, Concepta, and Immaculata were confirmed
novices of the newly-formed Sisters of St. Casimir, August 29, 1907. From the manuscript
of Mother Maria Kaupas, The Beginning of the Institute of St. Casimir.
While these words describe an event which happened more than 100 years ago, they could
easily be used to describe the Commissioning Mass that is celebrated each fall for our Villa
Joseph Marie faculty and staff. There, the men and women who are tasked with educating
the young women of Villa vow to uphold the ministry of Mother Maria and the Sisters of St.
Casimir and to fervently advance the Mission of the school. Like that day in August 1907, each
Commissioning Mass holds the promise of the school year ahead.
This year, the Board of Directors was particularly attuned to that Mission, how it is reflected
in Villa Joseph Marie, and how the school can best utilize its unique strengths. Villa has been a
distinctly Catholic institution since its founding — embracing the teachings of Jesus Christ and
recognizing the unique gifts and talents of the young women in its care. It was with this in mind
that each committee — Development, Education, Enrollment, Finance and Facilities, Governance
and Mission, and Marketing — embraced the formation of a new Strategic Plan for our beloved
school. Our Vision: to provide the very best opportunities for educational, spiritual, athletic,
artistic, and personal growth for a robust student body. Our Goal: to ensure the long-term vitality
of Villa Joseph Marie as the legacy asset of the Sisters of St. Casimir.
We are blessed to have Alumnae, parents, and friends who share our Vision and a dedication
to our Goal. This year, with your help, we saw increases in the number of Alumnae participating
in the life of Villa, changes to curriculum to ensure that our graduates compete equitably for
coveted seats in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) classrooms at the
university level, and establishment of practices that ensure the Mission and Catholic Identity of
our beloved school are lived by all constituents. Together, we are transforming the life of Villa
Joseph Marie for both current families and future generations of students.
None of these efforts could have been envisioned 107 years ago, as Casimira Kaupas, Judith
Dvaranauskas, and Antanina Unguraitis became Sr. Maria, Sr. Immaculata, and Sr. Concepta,
the first Sisters of St. Casimir. Today, a Villa education is empowering our students to lead, to
serve, and to provide a better tomorrow for future generations. This is the tapestry of our Mission
— Always more, Always better, Always with love. We are grateful for the foundation laid by the
Sisters and by the lay leadership that has gone before us, and we commit to remaining true to the
aims and aspirations of our Founders.
Sincerely yours,
Mary K. Smithson

2019 | 2020 ANNUAL REPORT VILLA JOSEPH MARIE 24 Dear Fellow Alumnae,
As I step into the role of President of Villa’s Alumnae Association, I look forward to the
FROM THE ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION many opportunities to give back to our Alma Mater. Each year, I am excited to see the changes,
additions, and improvements that are made to our school. This year has been no exception.
These are unprecedented times and Villa continues to rise to the challenge. The spirit of the
Villa that we all know and love remains strong. I am excited to see the goals of the strategic plan
begin to come to fulfillment and the continued pursuit of excellence in the education of current
and future generations of students.
The 2019-2020 fiscal year was a busy one for the Alumnae Association. In October, the
Association provided a treat to each current student during Alumnae Week. We were successful
in continuing our Villa Vendor Fair in conjunction with Christmas at Villa, bringing back more
than a dozen Alumnae small business owners to showcase gift items, just in time for the holidays.
In celebration of the new Performing Arts Center, the Association participated in the planning
for the first annual Women’s Symposium at Villa in February. And, in addition to these events,
the Association conducted its first Executive Board elections for the reorganized Association.
While we were unable to carry out many of the events we had planned for the spring and
summer, we are looking forward to finding new ways to connect with our Alumnae for the
2020-2021 year. We will build on the successes of the past few years and develop new ways to
connect to one another as we foster the engagement of our Alumnae. We continue to link our
Alumnae with the current student body through the mentorship program and to build Alumnae
participation in our events throughout the year. We hope you will join us!
As we all hold our memories of Villa in our hearts, we continue to strive to be “Always more,
Always better, Always with love.”
Warm regards,
Stephanie M. (Schlegel) Shortall ’01
