. It was Easter Morning and the Easter
Bunny was almost finished his rounds. But it was raining, very
hard, and he was starting to feel very soggy. So he hopped
on a bus.

Unfortunately, when he got off, he found he’d left his
basket of eggs behind. He felt terrible. Some children would
be very sad if they didn’t get their Easter eggs.

He approached a kindly looking Police Officer on the next
corner. “Excuse me, sir, could you please tell me where to go to
get my eggs back? I left them on the bus.” The friendly officer
directed him to the Bus Depot’s Building of Lost Things.

It was a big, big, big building. Hopping inside, the Easter
Bunny was confronted with THINGS as far as the eye could see.
There were baseball bats, steering wheels, birds’ nests, skis,
toys, but most of all, UMBRELLAS! Lots and lots of umbrellas.

He started looking for his eggs. It wasn’t going to be an
easy job.

“Hut, ten, fifty-four, seventy-two, ninety-nine.”
Peering around a refrigerator, the Easter Bunny saw a big,
burly Football Player. And clutched under his arm was one of
the Easter eggs! “That is one of my eggs, sir.”
“Too bad, shorty,” growled the Football Player, “but I’ve
lost my football and these eggs will just have to do for the
time being.”
“But if I don’t deliver my eggs, there will be some very
disappointed little children.”
“Well,” replied the Football Player, softening, “if you can
find my ball, I’ll give you back your eggs.”

So the two of them set off. went the Easter
Bunny, and went the big Football Player.
They looked under a guitar, around a drainpipe, and inside
an old bathtub. They saw tennis balls, soccer balls, and even
beach balls, but no football.

Suddenly, they heard, In front
of them appeared a young Ballerina. Dressed all in pink, she
was very pretty and delicate, right down to her...foot! On her
left foot, instead of wearing a ballet slipper, was strapped by
the missing football!
“That’s mine,” said the Football Player, as he lunged toward
the Ballerina.
“Stay away from me, you brute,” and the Ballerina poked
him with a nearby umbrella.
“Stop, both of you,” cried the Easter Bunny. “Where is your
other slipper?” he asked the Ballerina.
“I’ve lost it and can’t find it anywhere in all this jumble of
things,” she answered, looking quite depressed. “I don’t much
like this smelly old football, but I must wear something.”
“Oh well,” said the Easter Bunny, “let’s all take a look.”

So and went
the three in search of the missing ballet slipper.

“Hi ho Silver.”

The three jumped at the noise. It was coming from behind
a pile of coats, baking pans, and shower curtains. There, riding
a stick horse, was a Cowboy.

“Aha,” said the Easter Bunny, “that’s what you’re looking
for, young lady,” as he pointed to the slipper on the top end
of the stick.

“Hold on there, little feller. This slipper is part of my new
riding horse. My real horse, Gertie, got left behind on the
Lexington Avenue bus, and no way can I find her. Now, I can’t
feed sugar to this here doggie, but he’s better than nothing.”

“If we find your horse, will you kindly return the ballet slipper
to its rightful owner?” the Easter Bunny asked.

“Well, sure,” drawled the Cowboy, “after all, I kind of miss
old Gertie.”

So the group set off again, this time with the Cowboy
in tow, yelling, “Giddy up, little doggie.” The Easter Bunny was
beginning to wonder if he’d ever get out of this place. If he
didn’t deliver the last of his eggs, it would be a bad mark on
his record. Never before had he failed in his task.

It was getting darker and darker the farther they went
into the rubble. The umbrellas were closing in on them. Instead
of rather pretty, colourful ones, the umbrellas now seemed
to be bigger, and blacker. The Easter Bunny, Football Player,
Ballerina and Cowboy grew quiet. All that could be heard was
the steady drip, drip, drip of thousands of umbrellas.

Then suddenly, Crash!
The Easter Bunny’s ears popped straight up, the Football
Player howled and jumped into the arms of the scared Ballerina.
“Jimminy Cricket,” yelled the Cowboy. “What was that?”
“What’s all the fuss about out here?” cackled a thin,
high-pitched voice.

The four stood in shock as a Little Old Lady appeared
in front of them, wearing a HORSE-a real, live one-on her
head!
“I’m just having a little trouble adjusting my new headgear,”
she said, as she glared at them. “You’re ruining my concentration.”
She was really a very cranky old lady.
“That’s my horse Gertie! What are you doing with her on
your head?” demanded the Cowboy.
“Well, what would you put on your head in this pouring
rain? I’ve lost my nice, new shiny purple and orange striped
umbrella, and I’ll never find it in here. So tough luck, buddy,
this horse stays on my head from now on!” And the Little Old
Lady started toward the door.

toward the Cowboy.
“Wait! Would this be your umbrella?” The Easter Bunny
pointed toward the umbrella the Ballerina had used to poke
at the Football Player.

Turning, the Old Lady let out a cry of delight. down went
the horse, as she raced toward her cherished umbrella.

“Gertie,” cried the Cowboy, as he dropped his makeshift
horse and jumped back on Gertie.

“Ah,” sighed the Ballerina, as she threw off the football
and slipped her foot back into the missing slipper.

“Great pass,” bellowed the Football Player as he caught
his ball in mid-air.

The Easter Bunny grabbed the bucket of Easter eggs just
as it was about to hit the floor!

So they and their way out of
the Building of Lost Things. Past the baseball bats, shoes,
birds’ nests, steering wheels, refrigerators, guitars, drainpipes,
bathtubs, tennis balls, soccer balls, beach balls, coats, baking
pans, shower curtains, and dripping umbrellas,
and out into the pouring rain. The Football Player, the Ballerina,
the Cowboy, and the Little Old Lady all decided to help the
Easter Bunny deliver his eggs.
