Today was my birthday. I was three. When I got out of
bed, Mommy and Daddy said, “Happy Birthday, Timothy. This is
your special day.”

While Mommy and Daddy were starting breakfast, I took
the eggs out of the fridge. I wanted to see if they’d bounce,
like my ball. They didn’t.

“I did it by mistake, Mommy.” Breakfast was late. It took
a long time to clean up the mess.

After I ate, Mommy said, “Go and brush your teeth.”
I wanted to see how much toothpaste was in the toothpaste
tube. I made a long snake, which ran all the way ’round the
bathroom.

Mommy didn’t look very happy, but just said, “Okay, Timothy,
but see that it doesn’t happen again.”

I got dressed and then I went outside to play. Mommy
said, “Timothy, don’t get dirty. Your friends will be here soon
for your party.”

There was a big mud puddle near the backyard fence.
I jumped in it to see how far the mud would fly up. It didn’t
go very far. So I jumped again, but harder this time. It went
all the way up to my hair.

Mommy came out and said, “Timothy, how did you get so dirty?”
“I did it by mistake, Mommy.” I had to have a bath and
get dressed all over again. Mommy seemed a little upset.

her face. She cried.

When I went to bed, Mommy tucked me in and kissed me
goodnight. She turned out the light and started to close the
door. I said, “Mommy, you didn’t read me a story.” I like stories
a lot.

Then she closed the door.

Maybe I won’t make so many mistakes when I am four.
