The main business location of MK Curtain is at Nilai and now he owns a retail chain of
25 branches in Malaysia.
Products offered
Supplies a wide range of home furnishing products such as curtains, bed-sheets,
wallpaper, blinds and home decoration.

Entrepreneur Profile
Dato’ Calvin Khiu Fu Siang, Honorary Doctor of Business Administration and born in 1981 is a
Malaysian entrepreneur, businessman, and investor. He is the chairman of Mk Curtain Berhad
(MK), the biggest curtain showroom in Malaysia.He is also the chairman of Outstanding
Entrepreneurs (OE) School for Entrepreneurs. Khiu has been accorded numerous awards and
honors including "World Excellent Young Leader”,Outstanding Young Asian Entrepreneur
Award", and "Ten Outstanding Young Malaysian (TOYM)". Dato’ Calvin Khiu was born in 1981
in Bukit Gambir, Johor, and grew up in a poor, single-parent family. Khiu started working at a
very young age to support his family. He sold watches at night markets, delivered gas tanks
from door to door, did peddling jobs. Khiu completed his secondary at the age of 17 and went to
Singapore to work as a salesperson in a textile store, where he learned the inside out of the
textile trade while doing sales for the company. Seven years later, he decided to set up his own
business of curtains.

Business Profile
In 2000, Khiu started MK Curtain with zero capital and two employees. Within a year of its
inception, MK Curtain opened its second branch. Another six outlets in Negeri Sembilan
followed this in the following year. In 2008, Khiu initiated a tailoring unit that employed 30 pairs
of hands. The company spends RM200, 000 annually into skills development training program.
In 2016, Khiu went on to establish Outstanding Entrepreneurs (OE) School for Entrepreneurs
with the vision to provide training and teaching practical aspects of becoming an entrepreneur.
Dato’ Calvin focuses on high customer satisfaction by sourcing original and quality materials,
introducing creative designs manufactured by professional tailors and ensuring fast delivery. To
promote entrepreneurship in his team, Dato’ Calvin introduced a profit sharing concept via a
licensing programme for his staff

Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies
Hardworking person
Dato Calvin Khiu Siang is a hardworking person since he was young.He sold watches at night
markets, delivered gas tanks from door to door, did peddling jobs. Khiu completed his
secondary at the age of 17 and went to Singapore to work as a salesperson in a textile store..
Even though he already being fired from work two times. He never gave up to keep on working
and chasing his own dream. He worked hard and participated in various of awards in order to
learn something new until he open the MK Curtain Berhad himself and now becoming
Malaysia's largest curtain showroo.
Optimistic
Dato’ Calvin Khiu Siang is also an optimistic person. When he first open the MK Curtain at Nilai.
He opened it without any capital and hired only two workers. Frankly speaking,it is quite
impossible to sustain in business with that type of capital and workers but he never thought to
give up and always think positively that he can do it with all his might. Now,he owns 25
branches of MK Curtain Berhad around Malaysia and now aiming for the largest curtain
showroom in Southeast Asia. He never think that MK Curtain will fail from the beginning
because he is an optimistic person.
Humble
Dato’ Calvin Khiu Siang is very humble and down-to-earth person. He never brags about his
success or wealth to other person. He is also a humble person because he is inspiring and train
younger entrepreneur so that they also can achieve their dreams just like Dato' Calvin Khiu
Siang. In 2016, Khiu went on to establish Outstanding Entrepreneurs (OE) School for
Entrepreneurs with the vision to provide training and teaching practical aspects of becoming an
entrepreneur. This shows that Dato’ Calvin Khiu Siang is not an arrogant person because he is
willing to share all his experiences and knowledge to others because he knows how hard it can
be to become an entrepreneur.

SWOT Analysis
SWOT stands for ‘Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats’. This is a method of
analysis of the environment and the company’s standing in it.
Strength
Strengths in SWOT analysis are the attributes within an organization that are considered to be
necessary for the ultimate success of a project. Strengths are resources and capabilities that
can be used for competitive advantage.
High quality product
MK Curtain Berhad publish a simple but elegant design reaching an ideal balance between
function, quality, design and price.
Affordability
A strong concept based on offering a wide range of well designed, functional products at low
prices
Strong branding
An well-established company that already conquer the home furnishings products industry
Malaysia since 2000 also one of the strength of the MK Curtain Berhad and now is the biggest
curtain showroom in Malaysia
Weakness
Weaknesses include factors such as an abundance of rivalry between departments, a weak
internal communication system, lack of funding and an inadequate amount of materials.
Lack of technology resources
This is because MK Curtain is still only a well-established local company in Malaysia. Even
though its materials use to make the products are good enough for now but they barely can
keep up with global scale company like IKEA because they produce the products with higher
quality and more advanced technologies and machines resulting in a much higher quality
producrs
Not enough advertising and marketing
MK Curtain Berhad rarely have a great marketing and advertising. Even though they already
have a great branding. They still need to keep up with advertising and marketing the company
itself so that they don’t lose their identity and reputation for being the best home furnishings
products in Malaysia. MK Curtain Berhad also rarely shows up on television or social media in
terms of advertising their products.

Opportunities
Opportunities are classified as external elements that might be helpful in achieving the goals set
for the project. These factors could involve vendors who wish to work with the company to help
achieve success, the positive perception of the company by the general public, and market
conditions that could make the project desirable to the segment of the market.
A growing demand for greener products
MK Curtain Berhad should take advantages of this opportunities as consumer nowadays are
demanding more for greener and eco-friendly products.They should invest more in Research
and Development (R&D) for greener products so that they can produce a high quality eco-
friendly products at the lowest cost possible as greener products always cost more than
ordinary products. So,with that way they can attract more consumers and expand their target
market.
Shift of production base from locally to globally
MK Curtain Berhad should start aiming for a more wide target market. They should expand their
market to a global scale level company. They can do it slowly with opening some branches on
Southeast Asia first. If they achieve their target market on the Southeast Asia level then they
can continue to expand their company to Europe and all around the world
Threats
These external factors could gravely affect the success of the project or business venture. The
possible threats that are critical to any SWOT analysis include a negative public image, no
ready-made market for the final product and the lack of vendors who are able to supply raw
materials for the project
Market forces more competitors entering the low price household and furnishings
markets.
MK Curtain Berhad needs to reinforce its unique qualities to compete with these competiors.
They have to be more innovative in producing their products and always hear the feedbacks
from their consumers
Pandemic
As there are pandemic happening right now in the world,they cannot expand their company
within approximately 2 to 5 years for now as there are too many bad things are happening right
now such as recession so they have to be smarter on how to handle this pandemic situation.
MK Curtain Berhad have so many obstacles such as have to cut budget in order to sustain in
the industry and also have to wait until pandemic is over so they can expand their market
globally

Conclusion
In conclusion, Dato’ Calvin Khiu Siang is definitely a great entrepreneur and a great man himself
because he never give up in his life. He dedicated his life to be a millionaire and want to change
his life for better and he sucessfully achieve it with his optimistic thinking and always be a
hardworking person.Based on the SWOT analysis that I did, I believe MK Curtain Berhad
definitely have the potential to become a successful company locally in the home furnishings
products industry as there are not many competitors in Malaysia but to become a great
international company may be a little hard for them because they have to compete with IKEA,
one of the most popular company in world. MK Curtain Berhad need to refine their products and
produce a much higher quality in order to compete at global level. They also need to upgrade
their current resources and materials so that they can expand their market to other continent.
Dato’ Calvin Khiu siang is truly an inspiring person as he can lead MK curtain to this level now
even though their starting point is not good enough. It happens because of the characteristics
and mindset that Dato’ Calvin Khiu Siang have.
