Word: Common Pronunciation Mistake
Explanation:
the Say: • short sound ‘thuh (ðə)’ before a consonant sound
• long sound ‘thee (ði)’ before a vowel sound
• Normally, we pronounce ‘the’ with a short sound (like ‘thuh’). But when ‘the’ comes before a vowel
sound, we pronounce it as a long ‘thee’. When we wish to place emphasis on a particular word, we can
use ‘emphatic the’ [thee], whether or not the word begins with a consonant or vowel sound.
• The word ‘the’ is often pronounced ‘thee’ before a vowel sound and ‘thuh’ before a consonant sound.
This is not a ruling. It’s just a tendency to assist with the flow of speech. In speech, the word ‘the’ can be
pronounced ‘thee’ for emphasis.

Horse Riding Unit 2 (Textbook-Based Unit 1)
Horse riding is a cool activity. The age at which a child can start riding varies depending on the child’s size
and maturity. In any western country, a child at the age of four and who is 110 cm tall can start riding. However,
a reputable instructor would request the child to be at least 17 years old to start lessons. If you want to try a fun
joyride, it costs you RM10, and 2RM110 for an easy ride through a trail around the park. You will spend one-
hour riding crossing the adventurous trail, whereas it only takes 310 to 15 minutes for a fun joyride.
As to what to wear for horse-riding, some people wear short pants, but you must 4wear long pants to
protect your legs. Do not wear 5neck scarves, and 6long loose shirts, for these clothes might get tangled in the
horse-riding equipment. You may wear a casual T-shirt or a cap. Other than that, you also must ensure that
you wear suitable riding shoes. 7Riding sneakers or muck boots are suggested for horse riding but not hiking
boots which are too grippy.
There are few safety tips for you to know when riding a horse. When you’re approaching a horse, avoid its
blind spots, which are in front of the head as well as behind its tail. Usually, your instructor will teach you to
approach a horse from 8the front side. Lastly, you can take photos of the horse, but remember to turn off the
camera flash. You wouldn’t want the horse to get a great shock.

Practice A (L.S. 5.1.1) PL
News Break
Based on the poem ‘News Break’ by Max Fatchen, describe the emotions of the persona and her child.
News Break
Now why so loving, darling, But surely you’re some stranger,
And why the sudden kiss? No rage or hullabaloo.
You’d help me with some little jobs? Come closer, let me look, dear,
For goodness sake, what’s this? Can this be REALLY you?
Your face is clean for once, dear. Now were you struck by lightning
Your clothes without a crease. Or were you stunned at sport?
You saved your luncheon money? Ah… now I see the reason.
Will wonders never cease? You’ve brought your school report!

Practice B (L.S. 2.1.5) PL
Work with a partner to describe the reasons behind the emotions of the characters as answered in Practice A. Use
these prompt questions to help you.
• What happened to the child?
• What did the persona observe?
• Why was the child acting that way?
• What do you think the persona was thinking?
• What do you think the child was thinking?
The child came home acting all strange and unusual from his normal behaviour. The persona observed that he had
become more considerate and loving. The child had a reason for changing his behaviour to be more pleasant and
well-liked by his parent. The persona felt suspicious all the time and she had a right to feel that way because he had
to show her a bad report card. The child was probably thinking, if he behaved well and was in her good books, she
would not berate him so severely for his poor grades.
