Kuala Lumpur: In the effort to end the Covid-19 pandemic, WHO has been working with partners to
develop, manufacture and distribute safe and effective vaccines. Though most of us have been vaccinated,
vaccines do not make us totally immune to the virus. Thus, we are advised to keep wearing masks and
practise social distancing. To date, 64.4% of the world population has received at least one dose of a
Covid-19 vaccine. For those who receive a single vaccination dose, the waiting period is still the same.
It will take time for the immune system to make the antibodies that block viral infections. Scientists too are
still learning how vaccines will affect the spread of Covid-19.

Questions 19 to 26 Form 4, Module 4

You are going to read an extract from an article. For questions 19 to 26, choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D) and
mark the correct letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet.

Due to the pandemic lockdown in many countries in 2020, online learning has grown more important since many
schools have to be closed. Overnight, teachers have to wear two hats—to be tech-savvy and more creative in
conducting effective online lessons. However, for each online lesson, teachers have to double the preparation time

compared to face-to-face classroom lessons.
First of all, not all lessons are suitable for online learning, especially those that involve physical movement.
Teachers spend many hours selecting materials, and many more hours arranging the sequence of instructions to fit
an allocated time. For tech-savvy teachers, choosing the right device and applications to create the online lesson is

not a problem. There are many apps that have been developed to help teachers create interesting videos and assess
students’ work, but some apps have to be purchased. However, many teachers struggle with technology. They need
to put in extra effort to learn how to use these apps, which requires a different skill set.
Teachers also need a laptop, a microphone, and a mobile phone; some even use ring lights and green screen to

make their online appearance more presentable. Most end up using two or three devices and all sorts of platforms
like Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp, Telegram, Google Classroom and Zoom. This is to ensure their

content reaches their students. Many students do not own mobile devices and need to share with their family
members. Different platforms have different Internet usage. In order to save students’ Internet data, some teachers,

especially in rural areas have to ensure their online meetings are short but effective.

Online classroom management is also time-consuming as teachers need to inform students and parents when
their online lessons will be and provide a link for online meetings. During lessons, students may contact their
teacher when they face technical problems or give excuses when they cannot join. After lessons, teachers are

required to write reports for school administrators and follow up with parents whose children were missing from

the lesson.
Some research shows that on average, students retain 25 to 60 per cent more information during online

lessons compared to only 8 to 10 per cent in a classroom setting. This is because students are able to learn faster
online. As much as online learning preparation is longer for teachers, online learning also requires 40 to 60 per

cent less time for students to absorb the knowledge. This is because students can learn at their own pace—
rereading difficult sections and skipping concepts they have already mastered. Ideally, they can also refer to many

educational platforms for reference and revision from the Internet.
However, in reality, many students struggle with online learning as they don’t have their own space to learn
comfortably at home. Students also find it difficult to focus on their studies, with many kinds of distractions at
home. They miss what a physical classroom setting offers—silence, lighting and support from teachers and friends.
One thing for sure, sitting in classrooms with a teacher teaching students face-to-face does not require a strong
Internet connection, which is very crucial for online learning.

Do you know online lessons can be conducted anytime and anywhere? Some creative teachers download
several apps on their phone. This allows them to teach from the comfort of their car, while in search for decent
Wi-Fi coverage! To get the best of both worlds, some traditional teachers even create a small classroom at home

with a whiteboard. They record themselves teaching and sending videos to their students who may not be able to
join their online lessons. Many students actually prefer this method, since they can watch and rewatch if they do

not understand the lesson. Downloading videos also requires much less Internet usage.
Teachers have to step up to keep up with changes in education because online learning, even in a post

Part 4 Form 4, Module 7 LEVEL D
Questions 27 to 32

You are going to read an article about the experience of a teen on a mission to help stray cats in her neighbourhood.
Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap
(27 to 32). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.

Mark your answers on the separate answer sheet.

Rescuing Stray Cats

I was walking home when I saw some children throwing stones at a small kitten with a mixed patch of red and
black fur. The tiny creature meowed helplessly. Without giving a second thought, I lifted it and placed it in my bag.

Mum was not pleased that I had brought home what she described as the ugliest cat she had ever seen. Foxy

looked pitiful with its runny eyes, so Mum agreed to take it to the vet. 27 He also reminded me to spay Foxy

when she turns five months old.

To learn more about taking care of pets, I also joined several Facebook groups for pet lovers. 28 Then,

only I understood the reason behind Dr Norman’s advice to spay Foxy—we need to control the overpopulation of

cats!

I began to notice that there were so many stray cats and kittens in my neighbourhood. Many got hit by cars

and some had died due to untreated fungus and other illnesses. 29 The strays were abused and chased away

when they begged for food. Each time I looked at Foxy, I felt sad because it could have been her fate too.

Determined to start my own rescue mission, I borrowed RM500 from my parents. I bought two large cages and

picked up all the stray kittens I could find—one for the healthy ones and another cage for sick kittens. 30

The healthy ones are dewormed, and vaccinated at Dr Norman’s clinic; we had struck a deal to help the stray

kittens get adopted. It was not easy to take care of all ten kittens at the same time, but I was determined to give

them a decent home.
Soon, my stray kittens began to attract my neighbours’ attention. They were now healthy, litter-trained and

adorable. 31 I even offered a pet taxi service to bring them to the vet if the owners were too busy. Some of

my neighbours were not eager to use the service, but when I showed pictures of abandoned cats, they immediately

agreed.
Now, I am living in a pet-loving neighbourhood, with no more abandoned stray kittens roaming around.

32

A I arranged the sick ones to be treated at government vet clinics because the services are subsidised.

B Nobody wanted to take care of them as they were often dirty and diseased.
C The vet who treated Foxy, Dr Norman, gave me a lengthy explanation on how to take care of a kitten.
D Every day, many pet owners put up their kittens for adoption, along with their mother.
E One by one, they were adopted but on one condition—the females must be spayed, and the males must be

neutered.

F There are so many pet owners who share pictures of their cats on social media.
G My neighbours find stray kittens a nuisance because they steal food.
H From time to time, I get updates from my neighbours on their pets and I am so glad they are well taken care of.

Questions 33 to 40 Form 4, Module 6

We interviewed six teenagers about what they enjoy doing during their spare time. Read the texts below and answer
the questions that follow.

Teens on How They Spend Their Spare Time

A – FATHI, 16 years old
Being the only son in the family, I am busy helping my parents with household chores. However,
I will always find time to go for a walk in the park for at least 30 minutes. It helps me to clear my
mind and maintain my fitness level too.

B – MURNI, 17 years old
I want to be a dietitian when I grow up. Since Malaysia is the most obese country in Asia, I want to
help Malaysians lose weight the healthy way. Personally, I don’t like sweating and I find exercising
very difficult to do. So, the main key is to take care of our calorie intake. I am recording the calories
of every food in Malaysia and hopefully, the notes will come in handy when I start my nutrition
course next year.

C – TAARIQ, 13 years old
Have you ever heard of jump rope competitions? I am in a jump rope team and I train almost every
day. We travel all over the country for competitions and sometimes, we get invitations to perform
too. To spice up our performance, we do some dancing in between and yes, that is how I keep
myself occupied.

D – LEE NING, 15 years old
Like many teenaged girls, I love watching Korean dramas. However, I am doing it for another
reason—to learn the Korean language. I am fascinated with the fact that there are similarities
between Mandarin and Korean languages. Since I speak Mandarin and a bit of Japanese, it makes
learning Korean language so much easier!

E – FIONA, 14 years old
My parents own a home library, and I guess that is how I became an avid reader. I pick up books
of all genres but most of my personal collections are autobiographies. I would like to know how
successful people live their lives and what their contributions are to society.

F – KARISMA, 17 years old

I cannot live without my phone as I love taking pictures of nature—experimenting with different
lighting and weird angles. Sometimes, I have the really good ones printed but due to budget
constraints, I upload all of my photos on my Instagram account. I also follow some professional
photographers’ account to get some tips and ideas.
