“Teens do not make learning how to identify fake news as their top priority. They have many other
distractions,” said head of SmartNews, Torrie James.
Schools do not focus on media literacy. Most students will never take a media literacy class. It’s a subject

the youth by talking to them where they are – online. However, class lessons are in the works.

Cheung Soon kneaded the ball of dough and felt the weight in his hands; it was as heavy as his heart that day. HisNot For Sale
face beaded with sweat from his exertion. Must he fight his case again with his family? At the age of nineteen, he
was officially an adult and the obvious heir to his family business.
“We cannot do this forever, you know? It’s high time you took responsibility and take care of your family. You
have been spoilt enough,” his mother advised him that morning. “Why don’t you continue your studies after a few
years? In the meantime, you can earn enough money to support yourself and fund your tuition fees. We cannot
possibly afford for you to go to college or university now. We have already taught you all that you possibly need to
know about running this business and the family recipes.”
Cheung Soon kept quiet. He tried not to get angry, but what his mother had said was true. He had had his way.
While some of his cousins had to drop out of school, he managed to finish his Form Six studies. Besides, while they
were busy helping out at the shop, the hardest thing that he had to do was to finish his homework and made sure
he got good grades. There was some unhappiness from his cousins because of his privilege. They would have liked
to finish school as well.
All Cheung Soon wanted to do was to pursue his interest and widen his horizons. His initial plan was to study
medicine, but he realised it would take too long before he could earn a decent wage. Being a pilot would not be a
bad idea either if it wasn’t for his fear of flying. Thus, he gave in to his love of technology and settled for computer
science.
Whatever money he made for his family, he secretly kept a portion for himself. It was not much, but it was a
start. He had demanded a cut from his parents as soon as he was old enough to understand the value of money. As
he also knew how the business worked and his being a crucial part of the day-to-day operation of the eatery, his
elders could not refuse. However, compared to his peers, Cheung Soon received only a tiny sum for his services at
the shop.
He snapped back to the present from his worries. As he made the pleats on the dumplings and focussed his mind
on the task at hand, he heard the voice of his younger sister say, “Ko, do you need my help?”
“Just put a scoop of the meat fillings on each flattened piece of dough. That’s all,” Cheung Soon replied with a
smile. He had a soft spot for his siblings and did not wish for them to be forced into the family business like he had
been.
“The lunch hour rush is going to start soon. Make sure we have enough prawn and meat dumplings for the
customers,” his father shouted over the din of people chattering over the food. It was rather noisy at the eatery
during this time.
While his family members were bustling about to fulfil the orders, no one noticed the trembling in Cheung
Soon’s hands as he typed in something on his phone. He made a quick glance at the screen. Still no news. He sighed.
Pocketing the phone, he put on his best poker face to hide his emotions. Would his plans go as he expected? He had
been planning and preparing for months – no, for years!
After a few hours, the activities wound down enough for Cheung Soon and his family to take a breather before
the dinner service. The boy sneaked out through the back door, away from the elders’ prying eyes. Again with
shaking fingers, he typed in the information.
As the page loaded on his phone, he made a silent prayer. Yes! I’ve been accepted! Cheung Soon jumped and
whooped softly. I made it, and I don’t even have to use my savings or be in debt. Now, how do I break the news to them?
Will they be happy that I have been offered a place by the university of my choice?

My Pro Gamer Life
The earliest memory I have of playing computer games was when I was only three. It was the first time I laid my
hands on a computer. As a matter of fact, I learned to use the mouse and keyboard before I could even properly
hold a pencil to write my name.
Just recently, I have become more aware of how that has set the course of my life. 27 I immersed myself
Not For Sale
in the virtual world made possible by video games. I am now really grateful for this opportunity to do what I love
to do.
The journey has not been without its own set of obstacles. Friends and family tried to persuade me to follow a
more traditional career path. Looking at where I am today, people would agree their effort was pointless. 28
Just like many of my friends, I did not feel the slightest interest for any of those jobs.
Similar to any other job however, I had to practise every day to become an expert. It was not easy to do.
29 Personal relationships and skill development in other areas of my life suffered too.
There are pros and cons to gaming. To get the best of both worlds, we have to strike a balance between work
and leisure. As fun or tempting as it may be, spending hours playing video games without breaks is unhealthy.
30 It is hard to escape the social stigma.
I strongly feel that gaming has a lot of benefits. 31 They have to be quick in reacting to what they see on
the screen. Otherwise, they will lose the game. Playing detective or puzzle games helps you improve problem-
solving skills. These skills can be applied in the real world, of course.
32 Most video games that are popular these days are the online multiplayer ones. I have witnessed, as
well as experienced, close friendships built solely around shared interests and a love for video games. I would not
give my gaming life up for the world.
A Gamers are known to have better hand-eye coordination.
B I had to sacrifice time and sometimes money.
C Applying to different companies seemed useless.
D Gaming would not be just for fun for me, it became my job.
E For me, besides playing for the money, I love it for the strong bonds I make.
F People have negative views of gamers too.
G Players use controllers with many buttons to control the characters.
H I pound the idea of becoming a doctor or an engineer boring.

Questions 33 to 40
We interviewed six teenagers about what social media means to them. Read the texts below and answer the questions
that follow. Form 4, Module 1
Teens on Social Media
A – FATIN, 16 years old
It can be weird and even annoying. However, if you are not on social media, that is even more weird
and annoying. You feel pressured when someone asks, “Everyone is using it. Why aren’t you?” You
will have to repeat your answer to everyone you meet who wants to add you to their friend list on
the platform.

B – ZACH, 17 years old
My friends and I only use it for the group function. We only go on social media to check the groups
we are a part of, and then we quickly log off. It is easy to see the new information about our interests
on the groups.
C – LEE LIAN, 15 years old
Messaging on social media is incredibly popular among our age group. The reason is it allows us to
talk to people without asking for their phone numbers. Some people are just not comfortable with
that but are okay to send them a friend request.
D – RUBEN, 16 years old
It is useful when you want to try to find people online. Simply because almost everyone has it, it
is a no-brainer to search for someone there. Let’s say I met someone at a party and want to know
about him or her. I just use social media to do it.
E – JENNY, 18 years old
I would not say I am popular. Some people use social media to try and become famous. I really
enjoy posting my holiday and hobby photos online. Who cares if nobody looks at them? It’s a way
of keeping a record of my activities.
F – AZLY, 15 years old
Social media has a positive effect for most people. We are more connected than ever before. It
allows us to talk to family or friends who live far away. What’s not to like about it?
