Rock Art Rocks!
I’m Kyle! I have a really cool hobby, and you cannot guess what it is. It’s1rock painting! Have you seen people
collecting river rocks? They normally chose small round or oval rocks. I wondered why they would do that. The
stones were grey, and I didn’t find the hobby interesting. That was until I saw what they did with the boring grey
stones.

Videos online show people painting them. They paint hopeful words, but I prefer painting2Japanese cartoon
characters. Some of the artists sell them. As for me, I3decorate my room with them. My family and friends tell
me they look colourful. They4brighten up the room a lot. They cheer me up when I see them. They put a smile
on my face. Next you need paintbrushes and5acrylic paint. Water colours will not stick on the stones. Then
choose your favourite theme and start getting creative. Here is how you can do it too. First, you can get the
stones outside or you can buy kits with the things in them. You can find these kits from6arts and crafts shops.
Stationery shops won’t have these.

I can really improve my7creative skill. My sister’s cursive writing has become beautiful. She prefers writing
words to painting. When we get much better at our hobby, we plan to have our own8online shop. My parents
have suggested giving art classes, but we don’t like teaching.

A Turnaround for Mariam

Mariam lives in the quiet part of the town. She comes from a diligent family. Her parents own a small
restaurant. They wake up early in the morning for there are many chores to be done but most importantly
to do25marketing and cooking. Her elder sister, Amirah, often helps out to serve the customers. They have
many customers throughout the day.26Lunch break is always the busiest time at the restaurant.
Mariam is always33reluctant to help out at the restaurant. When there are many customers, her mother
would ask her to help serve the food as Amirah will be busy taking down orders. But Mariam simply ignores
her mother’s request. She prefers to hang out with her friends. When she gets home, instead of helping to tidy
up the house, she leaves a mess in the kitchen. Her mother always prepares her meals before heading out to the
restaurant. After eating, she leaves the dirty dishes and cups in the sink.
One day Mariam was at home27watching television when she got a call from her sister. Amirah was crying
on the phone. “What has happened? Why are you crying?” She was worried. Then Amirah said, “It’s……It’s
mom....”
Mariam’s heart sank with fear. “Yes? What has happened to mom? Is she alright?” Amirah replied, “Mom is
not feeling too well this morning and28she met with an accident on the way to the market. She is in the hospital
now. I’m coming to fetch you. Get ready!”
Once they reached the hospital, Mariam did not wait for the elevator, instead she ran up the stairs and all
the way to the ward. Her mother was in bed with her head29bandaged. She had knocked her head due to the
accident. Mariam was34sobbing uncontrollably. She put her arms around her mother and held her tight.
Her mother told her softly, “Don’t cry. I am fine. But you have to help your father and sister at the restaurant
now.” Mariam nodded her head and said quickly, “Yes, I will help them, Mom. Just get some30rest. You don’t need
to do anything, I’ll do it.” From that day onwards, Mariam never fails to go to the restaurant31after school to
help out, and occasionally during weekends. Her family notice the change in her. The accident is a blessing in
disguise. Mariam realises that having a close and loving family is very important. Family members should stay
close and must always32help each other out.

A Narrow Escape

There was a huge pond nearby our house. My brother, Marcus and I used to sneak out often to the pond for a
swim. We were warned not to venture anywhere near the pond area. Recently, an alligator had been spotted
there. 35 E This was our favourite secret spot. We were certainly not going to give it up.

One afternoon, after both of us had just finished swimming, Marcus went to change while I stayed back in the
water. I suddenly became aware of ripples forming on the surface of the water. 36 B A log, I thought. Then I
saw it. 37 A “Marcus….” I screamed loudly.

Marcus looked in my direction and immediately knew the danger I was in. I tried to get out of the water
as quickly as possible. 38 C Marcus shouted and started throwing stones at the alligator. 39 H The
alligator went for him now.

Meanwhile our screams were heard by two hunters who were passing by. 40 G One of them fired a shot
at the alligator. The alligator stopped in its track. It then retreated a few steps and went back into the water. We
were fortunate to have escaped from the jaws of the alligator. It was a narrow escape.

A Two brightly-lit reptilian eyes. (37)
B There was a motion in the water. (36)
C The alligator was moving towards me. (38)
D I could see its jagged teeth.
E We ignored the warning. (35)
F We had a lot of fun at the pond.
G They saw the alligator. (40)
H He managed to distract it. (39)

Hello Shayla,
(Introduction) I am sorry to hear about your health problem. It is no fun being sick all the time.
(Body) What you can do is to increase your intake of vitamin C. You need to consume food containing high
sources of vitamin C. Fruits like oranges and kiwis and vegetables like broccoli and spinach are known to contain
a lot of vitamin C. Use a juicer to blend your fruits and vegetables to make great drinks.
(Conclusion/Hope) I hope your health improves with the nutritious drinks that I recommend.
