End-of-Year TestQuestions 27 to 32
You are going to read an article about a student who went for a public-speaking course. Six sentences have been
removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (27 to 32). There are two
extra sentences which you do not need to use.

How I Mastered the Art of Public Speaking
As a child, I was as quiet as a mouse. I was a loner and usually kept to myself. I never imagined that one day, I
would become a well-known public speaker. (27) D

Let me share my story with you. Until I was in Form Four, I was a relatively unknown student in my school.
(28) G So, I focused my attention on my favourite subjects: English, History and Literature. This proved to
be a great asset. (29) A

When I was in Form Four, my English language teacher, Mr Rajan, chose me to act in a drama entitled
‘The Thief’. I was cast in the role of a lawyer who would defend an innocent boy accused of theft at school.
(30) H This was the turning point in my transformation from a quiet, little-known student into a popular
school figure.

The drama required a lot of focus. I had to memorise large chunks of the lawyer’s speeches in court. This
was a great boost to my command of the English language. Mr Rajan also helped me polish my delivery. I learnt
to pronounce words with accuracy and speak with confidence and fluency. (31) E They could not believe
their eyes and ears. This was their quiet mouse roaring on the stage like a legal lion!

From then on, there was no turning back. When I went on to Form 5, I was elected the captain of my school
debating team. Mr Gomez, a brilliant debate coach, was the team’s teacher advisor. We were registered for
the Speak Up Debates 2019. (32) B Mr Gomez stressed on research and impromptu speaking practice.
He assigned us 20 topics for reading and research purposes. We also had a lot of impromptu public-speaking
practices as intensive training for the big day.

It was a great day of victory when our school’s debate team emerged as the 2019 champion in the Speak Up
Debates. To my surprise, I was named the Best Speaker! I truly didn’t see that coming as I wasn’t expecting to
win the debate.

A It was my interest in these subjects that enabled me to become a debater. (29)
B We had three months of intensive debate practice. (32)
C This was a great setback in my life.
D I had never dreamt of becoming a great public speaker. (27)
E When I acted in the play, my parents were stunned beyond belief. (31)
F I began to lose interest in my studies.
G I did not join the Science Stream because I was weak in Maths. (28)
H My parents were surprised that I was given a part in a school drama. (30)

Part 5
Questions 33 to 40

We interviewed six people on the topic of stress management. Read the texts below and answer the questions that
follow. (Dotted underlined words are possible correct answers.)

How Teens Deal with Stress

A – PHAIK PENG, age 17
I go for a relaxing swim whenever I feel37stressed. I focus a lot on my strokes in the water. So all negative thoughts
disappear.36My intense breathing relieves me of the stress. The coolness of the water and its sounds have a
soothing effect. I’m lucky that there is a public swimming pool nearby which has a wave pool.

B - KUHAN, age 15
The Kledang Saiyong Hill is near my house. It is only 10 minutes away. This is where I go to whenever I feel
stressed. I usually prefer to go alone to get some38peace and quiet.33I walk up the hill. Midway uphill is a forest
with jungle trails. I enjoy the solitude here. You only hear the songs of birds and the occasional chatter of monkeys.

C – RASHID, age 16
I am into cycling. I am lucky because I live near the countryside where there are bike trails. I love to cycle through
the dirt roads with oil palm trees, coconut plantations and limestone hills in the distance. Cycling relieves stress
through better blood40circulation and breathing. The only danger I face is from passing vehicles like lorries and
speeding motorcyclists. I also need to maintain my bicycle to get the best out of my activity.

D – SUE LYN, age 18
I watch movies on streaming websites. My favourite movies are thrillers and crime detection movies. They
are39absorbing and help me take my mind away from the day’s problems. The best time to watch is before I
sleep at night. The most recent movie I watched was ‘The London Mystery’. The story is about the search for a
mysterious diamond thief. I no longer go to the cinema as I don’t see the need for it.

E – DINESH RAM, age 17
There is nothing like music and singing. It’s good for the soul.34I formed a music team with my classmates and we
perform at functions.34I forget all my problems when I am doing a show. Their applause is a great encouragement
for me. My band’s most recent performance was an online choir performance to honour our frontline heroes
in the fight against Covid-19. We are looking forward to the end of the pandemic so that we can do more live
performances.

F – MARTIN LAM, age 14
I am a ballerina. The ballet is an art form which35enables me not only to express myself but also to stretch my
limbs and tone my muscles. So I am agile and can bend easily. With ballet, I can leap, swing and almost fly up in
the air. I merge into the being I represent – a fairy, a bird or an angel! I can immerse myself in the life of another
person.

Hello Sheila,
Demo Version
End-of-Year Test
(Opening) How are you? Thanks for the birthday invitation.

(Why are you writing this email?) I need to advise you regarding your party. As we are still under a Covid-19
lockdown till next month, I think it’s not a good idea to have the party. You will be breaking the law and
endangering the health of everyone. So, I suggest that we celebrate your special day online via a Zoom gathering.

(Closing) Your friends and I will definitely give you a great birthday. (What is your hope?) Let us
celebrate the occasion in the right way.

The Hero

Your story should include:

• how to achieve success with his heroism

Question 3:

I am writing this article to give suggestions to upgrade our school facilities. SMK Sri Putra is one of the oldest schools in our district, so we need to upkeep the
school maintenance. The first urgent need is to replace the 90-year-old roof of the main building. There are leaks at various points, especially above the library and
the top floor classrooms. On rainy days, we have to close the library because the rain comes through and damages the books. The classes on the top floor have had

to be moved to other places in the school during the rainy season. This is highly disruptive and an inconvenience to students.

Another urgent need is to build a covered walkway from the main gate to the main porch. During the rainy season, we have to use umbrellas to walk from the gate

to the main porch. We get drenched in the process. Most schools have covered pathways from the main gate to the porch. We need to have this built in our school

compound. It is estimated that the pathway will cost RM20,000. I am sure the Parent-Teacher Association can raise the money for this purpose. The pathway will

enhance the safety and comfort of our students.

We can appeal for government aid to replace the roof. It will cost some RM200,000 to replace it. In 2030, our school will be celebrating its 100th anniversary. Let us

complete these two major projects by that time. (243 words)

Question 4:

An interesting place that I want to share is Kek Lok Tong Cave. It is located in a northern suburb of Ipoh known as Gunung Rapat. I went to this place recently when

I visited my cousins in Ipoh. They happen to live in a residential part of Gunung Rapat.

About one kilometre away from the cave, you will enter a big area of trees and shrubs. From afar, you can see limestone hills, granite rocks covered by lush

vegetation. You feel like you are in the jungle. The atmosphere is quiet and peaceful. You can enjoy the cool air.

Along the way, you can feed the monkeys that live on the hills. Once you enter the cave, you get into a vast inner valley surrounded by limestone hills. Here you can

have a picnic or listen to the birds. You really feel close to nature here. It is a peaceful retreat – ideal for meditation.

There is a cafeteria nearby which offers only vegetarian dishes. You can sample even the “meat” dishes which are prepared using vegetables. You have a choice of

spicy and mild varieties. Although the food range is limited, they are delicious and nutritious. They only use organic ingredients and are noted for good hygienic

practices.

I would strongly recommend this place. A visit to Kek Lok Tong Cave brings you closer to nature with no entrance fees.

Question 5:

Jega was a humble aircraft mechanic but he was a wizard when it came to servicing an aeroplane. His passion was in aircraft engines. But Jega could not be a pilot
as he only had an SPM qualification.

His dream had always been to be a pilot but his parents were poor. They could not afford the fees for the course. So, he joined an airline company as an aircraft

mechanic. His low pay was just enough to support his sister, Sharmani, who aspired to be a doctor.

Then, something happened to change all that. A plane crashed into the Java Sea in 2015. More than 100 passengers were trapped inside. The passengers were still

alive and had oxygen left only for two hours. Emergency rescue teams were flown in from Malaysia. Jega volunteered for one of them. He dived with the crew to the

plane on the seabed. Using a special escape corridor, Jega and his crew managed to transfer all the passengers into a submarine that was fitted to the plane. The

people of Malaysia hailed Jega as the hero of that flight. Jega was awarded a million-dollar reward. He was happy he could finally achieve his dream.

After spending four years at an airline academy, Jega is now a fully-fledged pilot. Not only that, Jega’s younger sister is now a doctor, thanks to Jega’s financial

support. With heroism and courage, Jega managed to fulfil his own dream and his sister’s ambition. (244 words)

One may have a university degree, but life often leads graduates to rediscover the value of their roots. One such
person is Bandar Baru Putra’s highly popular porridge (21)   chef  , Mr Sam Loo. He recently shared his
story with PERINTIS – our school magazine.

An (22)   engineering   graduate from the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Mr Sam Loo, first
worked for a construction firm. In 2008, the Malaysian economy suffered a (23)   recession  . Mr Loo, like
hundreds of others, lost his job. With his (24)   savings  , Mr Loo opened a family restaurant in Bandar
Baru Putra. This (25)   restaurant   specialised in rice porridge dishes which were made very famous in
the earlier years at his father’s streetside food stall.

All seemed to be well until the Covid-19 (26)   pandemic   hit in March 2020. There was a sharp drop
in business and the restaurant had to be closed due to concerns for public (27)   safety  . Not willing to
give up, Mr Loo, who had mastered the (28)   recipes  , ingredients and cooking styles opened his home-
based online food delivery service. With the help of his IT-qualified son, the Loo family used e-commerce to
promote their sales.

When asked to reflect on the past, Mr Loo paid a glowing tribute to his (29)   parents   who not
only gave him an excellent education but also taught him to perfect his (30)   culinary   skills. He also
praised his wife Jeannie for her faith in him. Finally, he advised all young entrepreneurs to master IT skills and

1 My Favourite Subject in School Part 2
2 Our National Language 3-4 minutes

Interlocutor In this part of the test, I’m going to give each of you a topic and I’d like you to talk about it on your own for
Candidate A about a minute. You also need to answer a question briefly about your partner’s topic.
Interlocutor (Candidate A), it’s your turn first. Here’s your task. Place Part 2 booklet, open at Task 2A, in front of Candidate A.

Candidate A I’d like you to talk about your favourite school subject. First, you have some time to think about what
(1 minute) you’re going to say.

Allow candidate 20 seconds to prepare.

All right? You may start now.
Back-up prompts to be used if necessary. Use the prompts below. [the oblique ‘/’ is included to make it as a choice.]
What can you say about this point? Tell me about… (e.g. Tell me about your favourite school subject.
Why do you enjoy studying it?)

(What is the subject?) My favourite subject is English. (Why do you like this subject? global language) I love
English because it is a global language that is a window on the world. I am very interested in current affairs and
English is the gateway to world news. (How can English help us make more friends? friends worldwide) Another
reason why I love English is because I can have friends worldwide through conversing in English. I have cyber
friends from the USA, the UK, Australia and Canada as well as friends in South Africa. (How is English important
in your future?) I hope to be a journalist one day, so English is important for my job as I need to be able to speak in
a universal language. (How can one master the subject?) I would say one has to do a lot of reading. The more we
read, the greater our mastery of the English language. I also participate in debates at school. That’s an excellent
way of improving our self-expression. One should also watch the daily news on television to pick up the language.

150

Interlocutor Thank you. (Candidate B), can you tell me how you are trying to improve your command of English?

Candidate B I speak English with my close friends. I have also joined the English Club in my school. (How does that
(approx. help you? write reports) As the Secretary, I write reports and letters to various people. In addition, I read
the daily newspapers faithfully every day. (Why do you read the newspapers? up to date) Newspapers
20 seconds) have interesting news articles which keep me up to date with the news. They will help me become a better
writer. I can also learn new writing styles. (What do you think about listening to the radio to improve
Interlocutor your English?) Today, people no longer listen to radios. Most people like myself listen to podcasts on their
Candidate B smartphones. They are a more interesting way to improve our listening skills in English.

Interlocutor Thank you. (Candidate A) Can I have the booklet, please? Retrieve Part 2 booklet. Place Part 2 booklet, open
at Task 2B, in front of Candidate B.
Candidate B Now, (Candidate B), here’s your task. I’d like you to talk about our national language. First, you have some
(1 minute) time to think about what you’re going to say.

Interlocutor Allow candidate 20 seconds to prepare.
Candidate A
All right? You may start now.
(approx. Back-up prompts to be used if necessary. Use the prompts below. [the oblique ‘/’ is included to make it as a
20 seconds) choice.]
Interlocutor What can you say about the importance of our national language? Tell me about …. (e.g. Tell me
about this point.)

(Why must we know our national language? pride) Every country has a national language. It reflects our
pride as citizens of the country. (How does it give us a national identity? link) It is also the common link
between our past, present and future. (Why the need for a common language? native – unite) Our national
language is Bahasa Malaysia. It is the native language of the indigenous people of Malaysia. It is also accepted
by the people as our national language. For me, it’s a common language to unite the various races. (How is the
national language useful in local trade?) The national language is important as it is the common language of
the marketplace and domestic trade. Buying and selling transactions can be done easily in Bahasa Malaysia.

Thank you. (Candidate A), can you tell me why the national language is important for you?

(How is the national language important in communication?) To me, I can communicate easily with my fellow
Malaysians, especially in everyday situations like talking to friends, buying goods and making enquiries. If
we can communicate in one language, then we can mingle around easily with people of different races.
(Why do you think you need a national language?) Bahasa Malaysia is the main language of education in
Malaysia. Thus, we need to be proficient in it to excel in our studies. All public examinations are conducted
in the national language.

Thank you. (Candidate B) Can I have the booklet, please? Retrieve Part 2 booklet.

Why Do People Keep Pets? Part 3
4-5 minutes

Interlocutor Now, I’d like you to talk about something together for about three minutes. The task will have two parts. In
the first part, you will discuss something with each other for about two minutes. Then, in the second part,
Interlocutor you will have another minute to make a decision together. All right? Let’s begin with the discussion task.
Candidate
People all over the world keep pets. Place Part 3 booklet, open at Task 3, in front of the candidates. Here
A&B are some reasons why people keep pets and a question for you to discuss. First, you have some time to
(2 minute) look at the task.
Allow candidates 20 seconds to prepare.

Now, talk to each other about the reasons why people keep pets in their homes.
Back-up prompts to be used if necessary:
What do you think (candidate name)? What about this (pointing to option)?

Candidate A: In my opinion, pets make people happy (How do they make people happy?) by making
pleasant sounds, jumping about and acting playful. Children are very happy playing with pets. (What is the
effect on us when we keep pets?) Seeing your pet happy makes you feel happy and relaxed too. Feeding your
pet makes you happy. Do you think pets help to overcome loneliness too?

151

Candidate Demo VersionCandidate B: Yes, I agree that having a pet around helps us cope with loneliness. (How do pets help people overcome
A&B loneliness?) In today’s society, there are many elderly people living alone or as a lonely couple. Having a pet will keep them
accompanied and occupied. (What about single-child families?) Families today have fewer children, sometimes only one
(2 minute) child. Having a pet animal would help the lonely child make up for the lack of siblings.
Candidate A: I do agree with your point there and I think that pets can help children develop a strong sense of
Interlocutor responsibility. (Why do you say so?) Very often when children want to keep a pet, the parents will ask “Can you
Candidate take care of it?” This puts responsibility on the children. They have to take responsibility for feeding, cleaning,
grooming, and taking it for walks. (What do they learn from this?) This teaches the children to accept responsibility
A&B in caring for others. It is also an educational experience.
(1 minute) Candidate B: Yes, I totally agree. I believe that keeping a pet can help lower stress in people who suffer from anxiety
or depression. (What are some examples pets can help reduce stress?) Some people feel better when they talk to their
Interlocutor pets or walk their pets. Others feel better when they cuddle or play with their pets. (How can pets entertain their
owners?) Some pets can perform funny stunts or obey commands. This is a form of entertainment for overstressed
Candidate people. What about the point on security? Do you agree with this reason?
A&B Candidate A: Yes, I do agree as having a pet at home can help you live more securely. A dog, for example, is a faithful
guard for the home. (How do pets guard the home?) They bark when they see strangers and thus, we are warned of
(2 minutes) their presence. Dogs also bark when unwanted creatures such as snakes enter our compound. So we can be on the alert.
Candidate B: (What do you think?) Yes, I share your view too. (How can dogs help the blind?) Having pets like dogs
Interlocutor can help the disabled. Dogs are good guides for the blind. The German shepherd is one of the best guide dogs
around. The dog can take a blind person on walks. (What other help can the dog give to the blind?) It can also take
the blind person to run errands such as going to the clinic, market or visiting relatives.
Candidate A: Indeed, I also feel the same.

Thank you. Now you have about a minute to decide together which is the most popular reason why
people keep pets.

Candidate A: (What do you think?) In my opinion, the most important reason is for companionship. Many people
feel lonely and pets help them overcome loneliness.
Candidate B: I don’t entirely agree on that. In my community, dogs are the most preferred pets. (Why do you say
so?) The main reason why people prefer them is more for security reasons. Dogs are kept as guard animals.
Candidate A: (Why do you say so?) That may be because you live in a high-risk neighbourhood where the crime
rate is high. Don’t you think so? I live in a peaceful residential area where people mainly keep cats. So, security
isn’t the main reason for most people to keep pets here.
Candidate B: (What is your view?) Well, I guess people have different preferences. I respect your views and I do
feel that keeping pets to overcome loneliness is the most popular reason.
Candidate A: Yes, I guess you’re right. Let’s settle on that as the most popular reason why people keep pets.

Thank you. Can I have the booklet, please? Retrieve Part 3 booklet.

You’ve been talking about why people keep pets, now let’s hear your opinion on this. What are the
problems you face when you look after a pet?

Select any of the following prompts as appropriate:
• What do you think?
• Do you agree?
• How about you?

Candidate A: (What is the problem faced?) The behaviour of a pet can cause problems with our neighbours. I am
talking especially about dogs. (What will happen?) They can be noisy as they tend to bark a lot. This disturbs the
peace and quiet of the neighbourhood.
Candidate B: Why do you say so? Can you please explain?
Candidate A: (How do pets give problems?) Dogs can also be aggressive and may bite people they don’t know of.
Most distressing of all, they mess the neighbourhood up with their poop. Neighbours may complain about this issue.
Candidate B: (Do you agree or disagree?) Yes, I fully agree. Pet behaviour can cause a lot of problems. As responsible
pet owners, however, we can minimise these issues with proper training and management of our pets, especially
dogs. (How can pet owners train their pets?) Pet owners should train their dogs to be obedient and to stop barking
on demand. They should be put on a leash or muzzled if they show aggressive behaviour.
Candidate A: Yes, you’re right. (What are other problems faced by pet owners?) I think pet owners also face
problems such as high medical costs. (Why do you have this problem?) We need to spend quite a lot on pets’
medical treatment at every stage of their life. It’s a matter of responsibility.
Candidate B: (Do you agree or disagree?) Yes, you’re right on that point. It’s our responsibility to care for our pets,
especially when they’re sick. It’s almost like looking after a child. (What must we do?) So we have to ensure that
we have enough money to support our pets’ daily care and medical bills.
Candidate A: Well, I am not too emotional about it but I agree that caring for pets and pet behaviour are some of
the problems faced by pet owners.
Candidate B: Yes, I think I agree with you too on this issue.

Thank you, (candidate A and candidate B). That’s the end of the Speaking test.
