Lesson 1: Reading Discuss thoughts and opinions related to live streaming videos. Real-Life Adaptation Core Civic Value: Happiness
Unit 1
Technique Practice A (L.S. 3.1.1) SPM-Oriented Part 5: Matching & Information Transfer Textbook: page 8-9 PL
Focus on Process not Answers
(UNDERSTANDING is IMPORTANT) Six teenagers are asked about what they think about live streaming videos. Read the texts below and pay attention to
the words in bold. Then, answer the questions that follow. (Dotted underline words are distractors.)
Thoughts on Live Streaming Videos
A – TASYA, 17 years old
Personally, I don’t frequently watch live streaming videos. I don’t understand why some teenagers are willing to
spend hours watching the live streams.3Such a time waster. I’d rather do something else that is more useful
than watching live streams.
B – MIRITHA, 16 years old
Most of my nights are spent online watching my favourite streamers.1I usually watch live streams while
working on my school homework, so I won’t get bored easily. I like to be around people most of the time.
Reading (Guided Practice Level 1) C – HALIL, 17 years old
(Word in bold in the text are clues to the possible correct answers.)
In my opinion, who needs TV these days when you have live streaming videos for you to watch daily. While
watching live-streamed videos, I can5participate in the conversation by commenting on the various topics that
the presenter or other audience members are discussing. Therefore, I would definitely choose to watch live
streamed videos rather than TV.
D – ERIC, 19 years old
Since I enjoy doing live streams, I believe that they are an essential tool for streamers to connect with viewers
around the globe. I also love sharing my ideas and opinions6online with both my friends and complete strangers.
Additionally, I believe that live-streamed videos can be viewed as a kind of ongoing blog.
E – RASHDAN, 16 years old Answering Technique
and Answering Review
In my opinion, live streaming is a way for anyone to make some money while2enlightening or amusing the

Welcome to Kim’s Webpage! Unit 1
Hi, and welcome to my personal webpage! My name is Lim Chong Kim, and my friends call me Kim. I’m sixteen
years old, and I’m the youngest of my three siblings. I have a sister and two brothers. I live in a big, busy town in
Kuantan, Pahang. Currently, I’m studying at SMK Sri Pahang in Kuantan.
Let me tell you more about myself. I love listening to music, and to me, life without music is like an empty cup
of coffee. I can’t live a day without listening to music! Although I listen to almost any type of music, my favourite
is rock music which includes slow rock and pop rock. I know it’s quite uncommon for a teenager like me to enjoy
rock music.
For your information, I listen to various rock artists ranging from the 60s up to the current year. My favourite
rock artists are Scorpion, Linkin Park, Coldplay, and also Eagles. I have a huge collection of those rock artists’
albums which I keep in my bedroom.
That’s all about me for now, and thanks for dropping by my webpage. Don’t forget to visit this webpage
weekly as I’m certainly sharing more about my life. Bye!
Now, imagine you are creating a webpage about yourself. What would be the interesting part of your life that you

Hi, and welcome to my personal webpage! My name is Syahrin, and you can call me Syah. This year, I’ll be
sixteen years old. I have five siblings, and I’m the eldest. I have two brothers and two sisters. I live in a small,
peaceful village in Bachok, Kelantan. I’m studying at SMK Kubang Laga, which is very near to my house.
Let me tell you more about myself. I’m sure that many of you have pets at home, especially cats and dogs. I
have a special and unique pet—an iguana. Its name is Bambam. I have been keeping Bambam as my pet for a year
now, and I’m loving every moment I have with it.
For your information, I found Bambam when I went fishing with one of my brothers at a river near my house.
It came to me out of nowhere, and without any hesitation, I took Bambam home. At first, my parents were against
the idea of me keeping Bambam as a pet, but after a week of begging and persuading, they finally agreed.
That’s all about me for now. Don’t forget to visit this webpage next week as I will be sharing more about
myself, my family, friends, and my hobbies. See you soon!

Some people mentioned that those who engage in cyberbullying have trouble empathising with others.
However, this is just one part of the issue with cyberbullying.
Bullies can also feel more powerful thanks to cyberbullying. A cyberbully may easily do harm to people,
with little fear or consequences. Lack of parental supervision and the desire to be famous are also important
factors.
Whatever the motivation, cyberbullies may affect their own future badly. According to studies, teenagers

A group of researchers from The Ohio State University recently presented a wireless, battery-free biochemical
sensor that could detect the blood sugar, or glucose, which human release from their skin when they
exercise. They have successfully fabricated a device called a “smart necklace”— used to monitor the glucose
level of study participants while exercising. The necklace is placed around the neck to read the glucose
level.
The device works using a resonance circuit instead of an installed battery. It reflects RF (radio frequency)
signals that are transmitted by an external reader system. The study participants cycled for 30 minutes, took a
15-minute break, and then resumed cycling after consuming sugar-sweetened beverages.

Six people are asked about what they think about attending online classes. Read the texts below and answer the
questions that follow. (Dotted underline words are distractors.)
Views on Attending Online Classes
A – ZEE JIA, 20 years old
In my opinion, I’ve no problem with online class because I’ve got used to them since COVID-19 hit the world.
In fact,2I do find that I’m more at ease when attending online classes as I can follow the learning sessions in the
most comfortable place in my home—my bedroom.
B – RAFIZAL, 21 years old
To say that attending courses online is beneficial to me is an understatement. It has its pros and cons, but if
you ask me to be honest,4I’m leaning more towards the second of the two. I personally feel that I don’t get
enough6attention from my lecturers like in a normal class session. Perhaps, others view it differently, but
certainly not me.
C – HALIL, 17 years old
Every time I have to join courses online, I get anxious because I’m not a proficient computer user and I believe
that I’m not alone. For some of my friends, they are having a tough time adapting to online classes for the same
reason. It is too5demanding, so sometimes I did not enjoy myself while attending courses online.
D – ERIC, 15 years old
I absolutely love it! Every time I’m attending an online class, I’m the first person who joins the session.1I don’t
have any issues with being punctual because I don’t have to be at school. Besides, my teachers are always there
to support me in doing my assignments. I feel I’m closer to them than at school.
E – RASHDAN, 16 years old
Joining online class is not the best experience for me, but not the worst. The experience isn’t the same as attending
physical school. I have to ask my parents or siblings to help me with online tasks, whereas when I’m at school,
my teachers are there to help me. Besides, I prefer to meet my friends7physically rather than talk and see each
other’s faces online.
F – LEE HUI, 17 years old
I find it very stressful and challenging whenever I attend online classes.3I have to race against the clock to submit
assignments given by my teachers, and what’s worse, some of the assignments’ deadlines are at the same time.
However, I would enjoy online classes more if my teachers gave me enough8time to finish my assignments.

universities. However, many people are unaware of the disadvantages of attending online classes. For some
students, attending online classes can be quite (5) demanding . They sometimes feel that they do not
get sufficient (6) attention every time they are attending online class sessions. Moreover, not being
able to interact with friends and classmates (7) physically is also one of the disadvantages of attending
online classes. This causes them to feel bored and unmotivated. Last but not least, some students struggle to
complete online assignments. They usually need more (8) time to complete the tasks assigned during
online class sessions.

benefited the most from effective customer and client communication skills. However, he stressed that everyone
should have strong communication skills because we talk to family and (3) friends frequently.
Mr Irwan then shared his views on how to (4) improve our communication skills. He told the
listeners about five tips to improve communication skills. The first tip is to make sure that before we speak, we
need to (5) think first. It is helpful to make sure our message is clearly understood by others, so we
won’t have to worry about pauses while speaking. The second tip is to communicate our ideas clearly. Avoid
using confusing, difficult words or long, (6) complicated sentences.
The third tip is to speak with confidence. Every time we speak confidently, we can gain the (7) respect
and trust of our audience. To be able to speak confidently, we should show positive body language, the correct
voice tone and make eye contact directly at the audience while speaking. For tip number four, we need to be an
active listener as well and not just a (8) speaker . He informed that there are five stages of active listening
which are receiving, understanding, remembering, (9) evaluating , and responding. He added that a lot of
people are unaware of those five stages when communicating with others every day.
For the final tip, one should be mindful of non-verbal communication, which are hand gestures, facial
(10) expressions , and body language. We should not wave our hands excessively when speaking and
must make appropriate facial expressions for the audience.

Views on the Importance of Teenagers Giving Back
A – Krishnan, 19 years old
If you ask me, I strongly agree with the idea of teenagers giving back to the community. Teenagers would
learn how to help their community in many ways, such as by making donations and doing charitable work. Other
than that, teenagers are also being6recognised by the community for their good deeds.
Unit 2 B – Syasya, 17 years old
As a teenager myself, I don’t think that it’s important for teenagers to give back to society. We’re still students
and our responsibility is to repay what our parents have sacrificed for us. I think teenagers should focus their
attention on their studies and4not do any volunteering until they have finished schooling.
C – Chee, 17 years old
I believe that it is important for teenagers to give back to the community. Based on my experience, when I am
involved in any voluntary work, I actually learned to improve my7communication skills and get to know more
about my community.2I have the opportunity to get to know new people, who are not of the same age as
me.
D – Uthman, 24 years old
I always tell my teenage siblings to always give back to our community, for it is a noble act to do.1They can
help the poor and also the5unfortunate people by providing them with food and drinks, clothes to wear, or a
free health checkup. This kind of act teaches them to be grateful and always ready to help people in need.
Answering Technique E – Francis, 20 years old

To me, teenagers must learn how to give back to the community. I view it as a beneficial activity for teenagers,
especially when they are doing volunteer work and donating to charities.3It is not only healthy physically but
also mentally. Besides, having the chance to spend time with people within your community is fun too.

Candidate B (Do you agree?) (Why?) (What is the next characteristic?) I agree with you, because if you want

(What do you say?) (What about being knowledgeable?) (Why?) I totally agree with you, because
you don’t need that trait unless you want to be a successful YouTuber like Syahmi Sazli and Mr.

needs to know about the content he or she wants to show to the viewers.
(What about being persistent trait?) (Why is that?) Moving on, I agree that being persistent is
the most important trait that YouTubers should have. If they aren’t persistent enough, they might
give up easily, especially if their videos don’t get many views. Isn’t it true?
(What is your opinion?) (Why do you say that?) (How so?) I disagree because because we don’t

(What about entertaining characteristic?) (Why?) (What about the last characteristic on the

Practice A (L.S. 4.2.3, 3.1.2) SPM-Oriented Part 2: Guided Writing Textbook: page 27 PL
Your teacher has asked you to write about someone you know who has a job that you admire.
In your essay, you should write about:
• the description of the person
• his or her job
• reasons why you admire his or her job
Write your essay using all the notes and giving reasons for your point of view. Write your answer in 125 – 150 words
in an appropriate style.
Unit 2 Pre-Writing
1 Brainstorming for ideas
Before writing your essay, jot down any ideas that come to mind. Brainstorming will help you generate more
ideas for a topic quickly. You can brainstorm using the 5W1H technique below:
What happened? When did it happen? Where did it happen? Why did it happen? Who was involved? How
did it happen?
2 The benefits of using the 5W1H technique
This is a useful strategy to help you plan your essay. You can also think of what information is needed for your
essay. It helps you to organise your ideas into one coherent plan.
3 How to use the 5W1H technique
Use this technique to connect with the writing topic. It helps you to relate your ideas to the topic given. Then,
write three questions about the topic and answer the questions you have created. Two questions have been
created for you as examples.
Example: 5W1H + a person with a job that you admire
(a) (What/ When/ Where/ Why/ Who/ How) is this person to you?

Model Essay
I looked up at the dark, cloudy sky …
In your story, you must:
• describe the incident
• tell your feelings after the incident
Write your story in 200 – 250 words in an appropriate style.
Pre-Writing
You may use the guide given below or your own ideas to complete the pre-writing.
Unit 2 (A) Beginning of Story
How to hook your reader’s attention? There is no specific formula for this. The following questions may help
you to determine what the hook is.
• Your character(s) can’t be perfect.
• Where did your story take place?
• What sentence or fact makes people sit up and take notice of your story?
• What is the audience going to care about the most, or be most interested in or shocked by?
Example
I looked up at the dark, cloudy sky while I was running as quickly as I could to reach home. As the rain was getting
heavier, I ran to find a shelter at a bus stand nearby.
Practice 1(a) Now it’s your turn to write
I looked up at the dark, cloudy sky while I was running as quickly as I could to get home before the rain started.
When I felt a few large drops on my head, I decided to find a shelter at a taxi stand.
Analytical (B) Middle Events Answer
Answers Video • What was the event leading up to the conflict?
• How did the character try to accomplish his/her goal?
• To make your story more interesting, include 2–3 challenges the character faced as he/she moved on to the
exciting part of your story. This builds up the tension in the plot before you state what happened.
Example
As I reached the bus stand, I saw a woman running in the opposite direction with a small girl. The girl was
struggling to keep up with her mother. Out of blue, a motorcycle rode past me and almost knocking me down.
Practice 1(b) Now it’s your turn to write
As I got closer to the taxi stand, I saw a woman running the other way, pulling a small boy behind her. Finally, she
carried him because he couldn’t keep up. A motorcycle rode past me out of nowhere, nearly knocking me down.

(C) Climax Unit 2
• What was the most interesting part of the story?
• Was there a twist in the story? Did something unexpected happen at the end?
Example
Suddenly, I realised the motorcycle rider was heading straight for the woman and child! He grabbed her handbag,
hitting her on the back at the same time. The woman was thrown on the road, directly in front of a taxi.
Practice 1(c) Now it’s your turn to write
I realised he was targeting the woman and child. He extended his arm and grabbed her handbag, hitting her on
the back at the same time. The impact threw the woman forward, where she landed directly in front of a taxi.
“Stop! Stop!” I yelled at the taxi driver while wildly waving my arms. Luckily, the driver noticed me and ran to
help the woman and her child.
(D) The Ending of the Story
• What was the result of the climax? What were the character’s reactions? Was any mystery solved in the end?
• What was the solution to the problem?
Example
The kind man asked me to accompany the woman and her child to the hospital. By this time, the motorcyclist
was already gone with the woman’s handbag.
Practice 1(d) Now it’s your turn to write
The kind man asked me to go to the hospital with them. At this point, I realised that the motorcyclist would
have left with the woman’s purse. The woman was treated for minor injuries at the hospital but her son was
unharmed.
(E) Conclusion • How was the problem solved? • What is the moral of the story?
• How did the story turn out?
Example
I went home and talked about what had happened to my parents. By that time, I was still shaken and traumatised
by the accident happened. I learned that we should be careful at all times.
(250 words)
Practice 1(e) Now it’s your turn to write
I told my parents about what had happened. At that time, I was still shaken and traumatised by the bad thing
that happened right in front of my eyes. I’ll never forget the scary look that the snatch-thief gave me. I learned

In your story, you must:
• describe what happened
• write about why you feel regret
Write your story in 200 – 250 words in an appropriate style.
You may use the guide given below or your own ideas to answer the question. Then, use the answer to write your story.
Unit 2 Beginning of story A description of a regretful experience
Who are your characters? Where does the story take place?
What is the story about? What sentence or fact makes the story interesting?
It was late in the afternoon when I received the important call. I never thought a phone call
would change my life so much, but it did.
Middle event What is the event leading up to the conflict? How did the characters try to accomplish their
goals?
I was making ends meet until I struck gold in my clothing business one day. I became
wealthy enough to buy everything for my mother. She was the most important person in
my whole life. We have lived together since I lost my father ten years ago. I was their only
child. While I was in a business meeting, my mother called to say she couldn’t breathe well
and that her heart was beating in a strange way.
Climax The most interesting part of the story. Is there a twist in the story? Did something
unexpected happen?
“Ma, why do you call me? I have an important business meeting. Talk later, bye,” I said, and
turned off my phone quickly.
I turned on my phone as I left the meeting room in the afternoon. My mother had tried
to call me more than a dozen times, which surprised me. Right before I tried to call my
mother back, my phone suddenly rang.
Ending of story How was the climax solved? How about the characters’ reactions? Are the mysteries
solved? What is the solution to the problem?
“Ma’am...your mother passed away an hour ago. We tried to save her, but it’s too late,” my
maid sobbed over the phone. I couldn’t feel my legs, and my mind went blank. I couldn’t
believe what I heard. I was on my knees crying out for my mother’s name.
Conclusion Why did you feel regret? How does the story turn out? What is the moral of the story?
It has been a year since the incident happened, and I still can’t forgive myself for treating
my mother badly. I should cancel the meeting and go home right after that call. I regret not
being there for my mother in her final moments.

“Forward, the Light Brigade! Cannon to left of them,
Charge for the guns!” he said. Cannon in front of them

End-of-Year Test Part 4
Questions 27 to 32
You are going to read an article about a student who went for a public-speaking course. Six sentences have been
removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (27 to 32). There are two
extra sentences which you do not need to use.
How I Mastered the Art of Public Speaking
As a child, I was as quiet as a mouse. I was a loner and usually kept to myself. I never imagined that one day, I
would become a well-known public speaker. (27) D
Let me share my story with you. Until I was in Form Four, I was a relatively unknown student in my school.
(28) G So, I focused my attention on my favourite subjects: English, History and Literature. This proved to
be a great asset. (29) A
When I was in Form Four, my English language teacher, Mr Rajan, chose me to act in a drama entitled
‘The Thief’. I was cast in the role of a lawyer who would defend an innocent boy accused of theft at school.
(30) H This was the turning point in my transformation from a quiet, little-known student into a popular
school figure.
The drama required a lot of focus. I had to memorise large chunks of the lawyer’s speeches in court. This
was a great boost to my command of the English language. Mr Rajan also helped me polish my delivery. I learnt
to pronounce words with accuracy and speak with confidence and fluency. (31) E They could not believe
their eyes and ears. This was their quiet mouse roaring on the stage like a legal lion!
From then on, there was no turning back. When I went on to Form 5, I was elected the captain of my school
debating team. Mr Gomez, a brilliant debate coach, was the team’s teacher advisor. We were registered for
the Speak Up Debates 2019. (32) B Mr Gomez stressed on research and impromptu speaking practice.
He assigned us 20 topics for reading and research purposes. We also had a lot of impromptu public-speaking
practices as intensive training for the big day.
It was a great day of victory when our school’s debate team emerged as the 2019 champion in the Speak Up
Debates. To my surprise, I was named the Best Speaker! I truly didn’t see that coming as I wasn’t expecting to
win the debate.
A It was my interest in these subjects that enabled me to become a debater. (29)
B We had three months of intensive debate practice. (32)
C This was a great setback in my life.
D I had never dreamt of becoming a great public speaker. (27)
E When I acted in the play, my parents were stunned beyond belief. (31)
F I began to lose interest in my studies.
G I did not join the Science Stream because I was weak in Maths. (28)
H My parents were surprised that I was given a part in a school drama. (30)

Questions 33 to 40
We interviewed six people on the topic of stress management. Read the texts below and answer the questions that
follow. (Dotted underlined words are distractors.)
How Teens Deal with Stress End-of-Year Test
A – PHAIK PENG, age 17
I go for a relaxing swim whenever I feel37stressed. I focus a lot on my strokes in the water. So all negative thoughts
disappear.36My intense breathing relieves me of the stress. The coolness of the water and its sounds have a
soothing effect. I’m lucky that there is a public swimming pool nearby which has a wave pool.
B - KUHAN, age 15
The Kledang Saiyong Hill is near my house. It is only 10 minutes away. This is where I go to whenever I feel
stressed. I usually prefer to go alone to get some38peace and quiet.33I walk up the hill. Midway uphill is a forest
with jungle trails. I enjoy the solitude here. You only hear the songs of birds and the occasional chatter of monkeys.
C – RASHID, age 16
I am into cycling. I am lucky because I live near the countryside where there are bike trails. I love to cycle through
the dirt roads with oil palm trees, coconut plantations and limestone hills in the distance. Cycling relieves stress
through better blood40circulation and breathing. The only danger I face is from passing vehicles like lorries and
speeding motorcyclists. I also need to maintain my bicycle to get the best out of my activity.
D – SUE LYN, age 18
I watch movies on streaming websites. My favourite movies are thrillers and crime detection movies. They
are39absorbing and help me take my mind away from the day’s problems. The best time to watch is before I
sleep at night. The most recent movie I watched was ‘The London Mystery’. The story is about the search for a
mysterious diamond thief. I no longer go to the cinema as I don’t see the need for it.
E – DINESH RAM, age 17
There is nothing like music and singing. It’s good for the soul.34I formed a music team with my classmates and we
perform at functions.34I forget all my problems when I am doing a show. Their applause is a great encouragement
for me. My band’s most recent performance was an online choir performance to honour our frontline heroes
in the fight against Covid-19. We are looking forward to the end of the pandemic so that we can do more live

limbs and tone my muscles. So I am agile and can bend easily. With ballet, I can leap, swing and almost fly up in
the air. I merge into the being I represent – a fairy, a bird or an angel! I can immerse myself in the life of another
person.
