J. WENDELL DUNCAN, MD, FAAOS

J. Wendell Duncan, MD is an AAOS Fellow, and specialized in hand surgery. He practiced 2
years in Easley, SC, and 33 years at Augusta Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Specialists until
his retirement in 2018. There he was a trustee. He served as president of the medical staff at
Doctors Hospital Augusta, Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery, as well as chairman of the Ethics
Committee and Impaired Physicians Committee. He also served on multiple other committees
including Bylaws. He was the recipient of the HCA Healthcare Frist Humanitarian Award
named after the founder, Dr. Thomas F. Frist, Sr.
Dr. Duncan is a graduate of Mercer University and the Medical College of Georgia. He completed his Residency at the
Greenville Hospital System and the Shriners Hospital, and did his Fellowship in Hand surgery at the Hand Center of
Charleston in SC.
He is a member of AAOS, American Society for Surgery of the Hand, Georgia Society for Surgery of the Hand, and
the Christian Medical Dental Association. He is a year-round volunteer with Samaritans Purse and has had a strong
commitment to medical missions in Ecuador since 1997. He has been involved in many community ministries in Augusta
and is an ordained Deacon and Bible teacher.
Dr Duncan joined the GOS Board of Directors in 2009 and served 12 years in various capacities. He was the Representative
from GOS to the Medical Association of Ga, President of GOS in 2015, and served six years as an AAOS Board of Councilors
Representative where he served as Chairman of the State Orthopaedic Societies Committee his final 3 years and served on
the BOC Executive Committee. As GOS President his project was working with the Board to update the Bylaws, and in
2017 created a program of visiting all 4 Georgia Orthopaedic Residency programs biennially to share the importance of
being a member of their state orthopaedic society. Advocacy has been a major interest of his and he taught the residents the
importance of the National and State PACs. In 2018 he was the driving force behind drafting Bylaws for the Georgia Society
for Surgery of the Hand. His most gratifying achievement came in 2021 when he wrote the 75-year History of the Georgia
Orthopaedic Society. For the first time the history was put into a printed format for all members. He was also instrumental
in creating the Georgia Orthopaedic Society Foundation and serves as its President.
