ET-STAR BEHIND THE SCENES ACKNOWLEDGING EMPLOYEES’ COST SAVING PROJECT Cost-saving is the financial objective of a company that aims to reduce the excess expenses that occur in every business unit. This objective is crucial for safeguarding the company’s financial stability and fostering its growth and progress. Consequently, many large organizations prioritize cost-saving and innovation by implementing diverse strategies. Ethiopian Airlines, for instance, offers numerous frameworks for cost-saving that can be adopted. As employees of Ethiopian Airlines, we put forth a range of impactful and innovative ideas for cost-saving through both group and individual efforts. In this edition of ET-Star staff magazine, we are pleased to acknowledge the significant contributions made by Ethiopian Group employees under MROFM645 in cost-saving and innovation projects. The team is engaged in numerous innovation projects across different areas of the company and among these projects, the team’s successful overhaul of the antiquated UPS rack and the resolution of persistent issues in the Cargo Data Centre stand out as particularly noteworthy accomplishments. This analysis is crucial in assessing the feasibility and effectiveness of the project. The team compared the costs involved in the initial full rack replacement approach with the modified approach, and the results are quite promising. Under the conventional approach of full rack replacement, the estimated cost per battery module was approximately $2,230. Considering that each battery frame consists of nine battery modules, the total cost for all two battery frames would amount to $40,140 per cabinet. On the other hand, the modified approach focused on replacing individual batteries within each battery unit. The cost for each battery unit replacement, comprising eight small batteries priced at $10 each, resulted in significantly reduced expenditure. By implementing the modified approach, the team has achieved significant cost savings for the airline that worth about $34,380 or Birr 1,899,151.20. The Executive Management appreciated the team for their valuable contribution and invited other fellow employees to participate in cost saving and innovative ideas which are significate for the industry.

ET-STAR Dir. Group Equipment and Facility Maintenance Ato Belachew Sheshegu and the section manager, Ato Komander Kumsa, transmitted their appreciation to the team after the successful completion of the project. Ato Komander Kumsa, on his part “I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the exceptional efforts of our team working on cost center MROFM645. They have been instrumental in generating innovative ideas that have propelled our beloved company to new heights. One noteworthy project that stands out is the successful modification of the old, obsolete UPS rack and the resolution of the repetitive failures in the Cargo Data Centre. Currently the modified UPS rack actively and properly working the intended purpose, I would like to express my gratitude to the team for their outstanding work and dedication.” In addition, we would like tanks for the CIO and his team for their trust and unreserved support for this great job. Good Job-Team MROFM645!!!!

ET-STAR STAFF VIEW ETHIOPIAN NDC – THE FUTURE OF ETHIOPIAN RETAILING What is NDC? NDC – New Distribution Capability – is an industry initiative launched and supported by IATA for the development and market adoption of a new, XML-based, data transmission standard dubbed NDC Standard. The NDC Standard enhances capability of communications between the airlines and travel stakeholders to meet the future need of airline retailing. How NDC benefits Ethiopian? ♦ Direct distribution – This greatly enables Ethiopian to directly share dynamic contents with partners, Travel Agents, Online Travel Agencies (OTAs), Travel Search Engines, and Travel Management Companies (TMCs) without any third-party involvement and dependency ♦ Personalized offers – NDC enables Ethiopian to gain in-depth customer data that is needed to offer the level of personalization that many consumers have become accustomed to. With the proper customer data, ancillary products and services can be combined with flights to create personalized packages. ♦ Share rich contents – NDC supports rich contents. Rich content can include a variety of extra details, optional ancillary services that can be added to a flight, and images and text that can catch the attention of customers. Ethiopian can effortlessly share these contents with the help of NDC. ♦ Product differentiation – besides displaying price and schedules on the traditional GDS ecosystem, NDC allows Ethiopian to market value added services to fully compete in the travel industry. Is Ethiopian NDC certified? ♦ Ethiopian has obtained Level 3 NDC Certification from IATA. Level 3 means Ethiopian has the Offer and Order Management capabilities. In addition to the basic booking and selling capabilities, key elements of servicing like changes in NDC booking are supported. Thank you, Elias Gezehagn, Senior Digital Solution Officer I, for sharing the information

ET-STAR FOR INFORMATION WORLD’S BUSIEST AIRPORT 2023 There’s no change at the top of the list. The No. 1 airport for passenger volume in 2023, Atlanta’s HartsfieldJackson International, has held that position every year — except pandemic-walloped 2020 — for more than two decades. But for the first time, Dubai takes the No. 2 ranking, according to Airports Council International’s preliminary rankings for 2023, released on Monday. “Dubai served around 87 million passengers in 2023. That is a year-to-year increase of 31%, and that is 1% higher than 2019. And they connected 262 destinations around 104 countries to 102 international carriers,” said Luis Felipe de Oliveira, ACI World’s director general. The airport’s jump up from No. 5 in 2022 is representative of a big growth area in aviation, with industry expansion in emerging and developing economies in the Middle East and Asia Pacific expected at more than twice the rate of advanced economies in the decades to come, de Oliveira said. But Atlanta doesn’t have too much to worry about for now. With 104.7 million passengers in 2023, Dubai’s not nipping at its heels just yet. That figure is still about 5% below ATL’s pre-pandemic 2019 passenger total, but de Oliveira said ACI expects Atlanta to serve about 110 million passengers in 2024 – bringing the airport back to 2019 passenger levels. Globally, passenger traffic in 2023 grew by 27% from 2022 to reach nearly 94% of 2019 results, with domestic travel rebounding more quickly from the pandemic — growing by 20% from 2022 to reach almost 97% of 2019 levels.

ET-STAR The world’s largest domestic market, the United States, had four more airports – all with significant domestic passenger shares – in the top 10 in 2023: Dallas/Fort Worth (No. 3), Denver (No. 6), Los Angeles (No. 8) and Chicago O’Hare (No. 9). But in 2023, it was the international market that drove recovery, growing about 37% to reach about 90% of 2019 figures. And while Dubai is the No. 2 airport for overall traffic, it’s No. 1 in the world for international passengers. Plus, it has evolved into a destination. London Heathrow, another strong international player, jumped up from No. 8 in 2022 to No. 4 last year. But it was Tokyo Haneda in Japan that made the biggest leap – from No. 16 to No. 5, thanks largely to Japan’s reopening. It’s a welcome indicator that Asia’s passenger numbers are getting back on track, de Oliveira said. Istanbul’s airport held steady at No. 7, and Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi dropped one spot from No. 9 in 2022 to No. 10 last year. India, with an enormous population that’s increasingly connected by air, is an example of growth in the industry’s capillary network in different parts of the world. “In the US, you have a very good capillarity in the system – the small, medium and big airports connecting with each other. We don’t have that in many parts of the world,” de Oliveira said. But it’s growing rapidly in India, he said, with Air India and IndiGo buying hundreds of aircraft and the government investing in the country’s more than 140 airports. The 2023 global total passengers’ figure is close to 8.5 billion, according to ACI’s preliminary figures. Source: CNN Travel/Edition April 15, 2024

ET-STAR AVIATION AND TECHNOLOGY WHAT IS AI AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR AVIATION? AI, or artificial intelligence, is the ability of machines to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, and decision-making. The aviation industry is under pressure to improve the sustainability of air travel while improving operational efficiency in an increasingly complex marketplace that is still recovering from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In an industry where safety is paramount and new technologies require utmost scrutiny, generative AI promises to boost aviation businesses and their industry partners. There is a myriad of potential use cases for generative AI. Some use cases require time to integrate with existing business systems and processes, but industry leaders should move forward to areas best suited for generative AI’s strengths. These include enhancing customer experiences through better, more personalized travel recommendations and promotions, as well as improving customer service by creating more robust virtual assistants. Generative AI could also help maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) technicians by enabling them to retrieve relevant information more effectively for repairs, or by automating the creation of parts and equipment orders so repair or maintenance can start as soon as a plane lands. Some airlines are already using generative AI in communications and customer service operations, including automating translations of texts, producing marketing materials, and writing copies. AAR Corp, a private provider of aviation services, is considering the use of generative AI to optimize inventory management, provide predictive maintenance, improve warehouse operations, and automate parts ordering. The aviation industry is prudently taking a cautious approach to rolling out AI. In May, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) released the second version of its AI Roadmap, which provides a comprehensive plan for the integration of AI in aviation, with a focus on safety, security, AI assurance, human factors and ethical considerations. Such measures indicate that the industry is aware of AI’s risks, which include bias in the data used by machine learning systems to train AI models that can skew recommendations or analyses. In addition, generative AI can sometimes identify patterns or objects in data that are nonexistent and yield results that are either nonsensical or altogether inaccurate—a phenomenon known as a “hallucination.” Because of the possibility of error in generative AI, aviation companies should begin by exploring use cases where some variability can be tolerated, such as customer service bots. They must also make sure that customer data is secure and that its use is compliant with data privacy regulations. Source: www.AvaitionInternationalNews
