ET-STAR HEALTH CORNER LUNG CANCER Lung cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the lung tissue and can quickly spread to other parts of the body if left untreated. It is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in both men and women worldwide. In Ethiopia, the estimated prevalence of lung cancer is 1-1.5%. Causes & Risk Factors The predominant cause of lung cancer is smoking. Cigarette smoke contains numerous carcinogens, chemicals that can cause cancer, that damage the DNA in lung cells and cause them to grow abnormally. Other risk factors for lung cancer include exposure to second-hand smoke, previous radiation therapy to the chest, exposure to workplace toxins such as asbestos and diesel exhaust, a family history of lung cancer, and chronic lung diseases such as emphysema and pulmonary fibrosis. Symptoms and signs Common symptoms include a persistent cough that worsens over time, chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, hoarseness, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue. Since these symptoms can also be caused by other conditions, it’s important to see a doctor if you experience any of them for an extended period of time. Unfortunately, lung cancer symptoms often don’t appear until the disease has progressed to an advanced stage when treatment options are more limited. Diagnosis Diagnosis is made by chest X-ray, CT scan, PET scan and/or biopsy where a piece of lung tissue is examined for presence of cancer cells microscopically. Once a diagnosis is made, the stage of the cancer will be determined, ranging from Stage 1 (localized, small tumour) to Stage 4 (advanced cancer that has spread to other parts of the body). Treatment Treatment options for lung cancer depend on the stage and type of cancer, as well as the patient’s overall health. Surgery is often the first-line treatment for lung cancers while radiation and chemotherapy are used for more advanced diseases. Targeted therapy and immunotherapy are newer treatment approaches that involve drugs that target specific cancer cells or boost the immune system’s response to cancer. The outlook for lung cancer varies depending on the stage of the cancer at the time of diagnosis. Overall, the five-year survival rate for all lung cancer cases is around 20%. However, when caught early, lung cancer is much more treatable and survival rates are higher. Prevention Never start smoking or quit smoking. Additionally, avoiding exposure to second hand smoke and workplace toxins such as asbestos and diesel exhaust can reduce your risk. Practicing good lung health, such as regular exercise and getting enough rest, can also play a role in preventing lung cancer. by Dr. Maraki Assefa Medical Doctor

ET-STAR POEM ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES A fledgling eagle spans its young wings, Soar over the clouds and flies. Fighting bravely gust of strong winds, Its home in the highest skies. The eagle remains undaunted, By the monstrous anger of the winds. And with its power proudly flaunted, Eyes zoom in keenly scanning for finds. And dive earthward to target at a speed, Dashing forward with full likelihood. And obtain the goal and succeed, To thrive and ensure its livelihood. A beautiful flying machine over the cloud, Beams proudly its beautiful tricolour. With its trusting voyageurs safe and sound, All Depart, Arrive in time by the hour. The Eagles wings are as wide as ever, Lives up its name to keep the gain. Ethiopian keeps faith as strong as ever. So keeps winning, again and again. ET-STAR MORAL STORY RICH DAD & WISE SON In a big country, a man was living along with his family. The man had abundance of wealth. He had a son and one day he took his son on a trip to the country. During their journey, they reached in a small village. There, they spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from their trip, dad asked to his son, “How was the trip my son?” The son replied with an excitement “It was a great trip, Dad.” The rich dad asked, “Did you see how the poor people live? The purpose of the journey was to make you understand how fortunate you are having born in such a wealthy family.” “‘Oh yeah,” said the son and smiled towards his father. The father asked, “So, my dear son, tell me; what did you learn from the trip?” The wise son answered, “I saw that we have one dog and they had three. We have a swimming pool that reaches to the middle of our garden, and they have a river that has no end. We have imported designer lanterns in our garden and on our terrace and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard, and they have the whole horizon.” The father got a bit confused with his son’s answers. The son continued, “We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields which go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them. We spend our free time with television and mobiles, they spend their free time with family and relatives.” The son summed up his experience on the trip to the village, “Thanks Dad, for showing me how poor we are….!!” The wise son’s response left the rich dad speechless. Moral of the story We should not run after money. Money can buy clothes, or gadgets, or cars, or big house or many other things which gives you comfort. But there are few things which money cannot buy…..its simplicity, love kindness, compassion, friendships, values, family that makes your lives rich. Source: From the internet
