a box of sand and begins pouring it into the glass. The sand fills in the small crevasses between the pebbles and

container until it is brimming. The professor asks one last time, “Is it full?” and every student shouts “Yes!” The

professor asks, “What did we learn here today?” A student in the front row chimes in “If you are really good with your

dumbfounded. The professor continues, “The point of this demonstration is this… (cont’d Page 2)

Summer Safety Tips from our Registered RN Carrie

With the warm summer temps, it is important to prevent heat exhaustion! This can be pre-
vented by: drinking 8oz. of water/electrolyte drink for every hour outside (even if you don’t feel
thirsty), eat high water content food, stay in the shade as much as possible and always use air

conditioning when the temps top 90 degrees!

Signs & Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion: High Water Content Foods:

Dizziness, headache, stop sweating, nauseous, don’t Watermelon, cucumber, zucchini, strawberries, lettuce,
feel warm anymore celery, tomatoes, peaches, broccoli, peppers and
radishes!
Action:

Get into a cool place IMMEDIATELY, apply cool
washcloths to forehead, neck, armpits, and groin, drink 1

quart of water/electrolyte drink

If symptoms get worse, contact physician or 911

unwavering compassion and care.

 Ask for help—If you are feeling the burden of your CAREGiving

job beginning to drag you down, talk to someone! It may be help from a

friend who will watch you kids once a week so that you can take a break or

a relative who makes dinner occasionally. Ask for help!

 Be ‘selfish’ occasionally—As a CAREGiver, you’re prone to see the

needs of others ahead of your own – which is very noble! However, your

needs are important too, and if they are not met, you cannot care for others

So, take some time every week to read a book, go on a walk, paint, sing –

do whatever it is that relaxes and renews you.

 Create nutritious meals—Eating healthy is a key part of feeling good and

staying energized and motivated! One of the effects of caregiver stress is

overeating. Just say no – it only makes things worse. Eating healthy foods

will keep you from getting sick, give you more energy, and just make you

feel better all day long!

 Do get some sleep—You will not function well for very long if you’re

neglecting sleep. Being a CAREGiver requires you to be mentally with-it

and ready for anything. That means you better not be yawning every 30

seconds. That means that as an average adult, you need 7.5 to 8 hours of

sleep each night. *Excerpt taken from myCNAjobs.com
