Your Guide to Visiting Our
Nation’s Capital
Welcome to Washington, DC
Dear Friends from the 24th District of Texas,
As your Representative in Congress, I am pleased to offer you this “Welcome to
Washington, DC” booklet, which includes information about many attractions in and
around DC to help you prepare for your visit to our nation’s capital. There are some

especially during the summer months and vacation times. Be sure to plan early and
contact my office as far in advance as possible. There is a lot for us to be proud of in
Washington DC, and I hope that your visit will be an enjoyable one. If your schedule
permits, please stop by my office and say hello.

HOW TO GET AROUND IN WASHINGTON
OVERVIEW
Washington, DC is divided into four quadrants (NW, NE, SW, SE). When traveling the city, note which
quadrant your destination is in because the streets cross all the sections of the city. Therefore, an
address can be duplicated in the four different quadrants.
METRO RAIL/BUS
(202) 637-7000
WMATA.com
Washington has a subway system, called a Metro, which can take you to all of its major tourist attractions,
Reagan National Airport, and other various places for a very reasonable fare. Trains arrive in each Metro
station every five minutes during rush hours (6-9:30 a.m., 3-6:30 p.m.) and every ten minutes the rest of
the day. The Metro bus system is another inexpensive and reliable means of transportation. For
information on Metro routes, schedules, and fares, call or check the website.
TAXI CABS
Dctaxi.dc.gov
Taxis in DC are on a meter system similar to what you will find in Virginia and Maryland. The rates are
the same throughout the city and increase with each zone that is entered. To find out more about the
zone system visit the website. Hailing a cab (easier at major intersections or at a hotel) is more reliable
than calling a company, but if you must here are some companies to call:
ABC Cab (202) 398-0526 Liberty Cab (202) 398-0526
