CT RIVER VALLEY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
GLASTONBURY | EAST HARTFORD | MARLBOROUGH

CRVCHAMBER.ORG | (860) 659-3587
2400 MAIN STREET, GLASTONBURY, CT

A Message from Board Chair Paul Haas

Fellow Members,

I offer this 2020 reflection as a tribute to all business owners,
members and non-members alike, who worked to help their
businesses survive this past year. We honor the character, work, worry,
concern for employees, creativity, and grit each one showed and
continues to show.

In June we will get together in person to honor our Business Person of
the Year, Jordan Coe, Community Partner, Rosie Kapur; President’s
Award recipient, Mike Chemerynski. These three individuals are
examples of what makes our chamber such an outstanding
organization. Their dedication to the community deserves a special
celebration.

The Connecticut River Valley Chamber of Commerce will emerge from
the Covid-19 pandemic as a more nimble, tested, and focused group
because of our President Mary Ellen Dombrowski. It would be
impossible to describe the time and effort she expends. She was, and
is, a constant source of ideas and optimism. The East of the River
business community has never had a more dedicated champion.

Our Ambassador Program is restructured and re-energized to provide
more value to our members. Networking groups are on fire and
operate as a sales funnel attracting new members. The Chamber is
continuing to bring in revenue through imaginative re-designs of our
events.

Many people deserve recognition. However, Sherry Williams our
Treasurer deserves special mention. During 2020 Sherry made certain
the Chamber stayed in a financially sound position. She was
instrumental in securing an Economic Injury Disaster Loan as well as a
Payroll Protection Program Loan. She spent hours forecasting our
cash position and is still tracking it today. Without Sherry's expertise
and guidance our Chamber would not be in such a strong financial
position.

We still face revenue challenges. They are being met with optimism
and creativity. Your voice as a member needs to be part of the
conversation. Get engaged and you will find people who share your
passion to make your business and our community better. Here’s to a
great 2021!

Paul Haas, Jr
Chairman of the Board

President's Message

Mary Ellen Dombrowski

The Chamber was impacted by COVID and the team
worked remotely on a reduced schedule beginning in
March, 2020. We reopened the office in October on
reduced hours. Our long-standing staff departed for new
full time opportunities during that time with Wendy
Magnifico still with us on a very part time basis taking care
of our finances. I’m also pleased to let you know that Kim
Collins joined our team two months ago to support
member needs.

Our Executive Committee – Paul Haas, Chair; Steve Weir,
Chair-Elect; Sherry Williams, Treasurer; Diane Lipes,
Programs & Events Officer; Mike Ski, Networking Officer;
Jay Margnelli, Membership Officer; Mandi Garfield,
Sponsorship Officer and Bob Zanlungo, Family &
Community Engagement Officer had to make hard
decisions early on that proved to be the best for the
Chamber. They have stepped up in an extraordinary way
along with many others to see us through.

We hosted Slices of the Applefest – virtual road races,
Harvest Pub & pie sales, seminars, Industry Expert
presentations, virtual leads groups, candidate forums,
launched CEO roundtables, two hybrid events for Women,
a Golf tournament, the Drive Thru Trunk or Treat at Pratt
& Whitney, family magic show and even a couple covid-
compliant in person events. We created an introductory
entrepreneur membership for businesses starting after
March 1, 2020, enhanced our website and created the CT
River Valley Community FB group.

This is my 16th and final annual meeting and I am so
grateful to have spent these years with you. Our 2021
calendar is filling up with an indoor and outdoor golf
tournament, Spring event at Hops on the Hill and on June
3rd we will be celebrating those we are recognizing today
outside at A Villa Louisa in Bolton. Very soon we will be
returning to Business After Hours and more live events!
We are all looking forward to being together again.

Awards & Recognitions

Business Person of the Year

Jordan Coe

As an active member of the chamber, Jordan has
served on the Board of Directors, an officer on the
Executive Committee. and most recently on the
Search Committee for the chamber president. In
2017, Jordan was the recipient of the Solon L.
Weiner Community Service Award presented by the
chamber.

Jordan Cohen Coe and her family own and operate
Waverly Markets, LLC/ShopRites of Manchester, East
Hartford and Vernon. Aside from continuing a
legacy that spans four generations in the food
business, Jordan has a passion for workforce
development and spends a large portion of her time
helping to create opportunities for youth in her
business and community. In addition, she spends a
great deal of time supporting sustainability
initiatives particularly as it relates to food insecurity,
offering free nutritional services to schools,
community organizations, Waverly Markets’
associates and customers and engaging in
partnerships that address and create awareness for
some of the toughest challenges faced by her
community with regard to hunger and health and
wellness.

Jordan is currently on the board of the Greater
Manchester Chamber of Commerce, a
commissioner on the Vernon Economic
Development Commission, on the steering
committee of the CT Children’s Medical Center
Connection and on the board of Wakefern Food
Corporation. She holds an MBA in Marketing and
International Business from the University of
Connecticut and a BA in Psychology and Italian
Studies from Boston University. Jordan is married
with four children and counts her approximately
450 associates as family.

Community Partner Award | Rosy Kapur

This year we are recognizing a member who contributed to the region in
extraordinarily selfless ways during the pandemic. Rosy Kapur, owner of Liquid
Nirvana, Glastonbury founded the business in 2014, which today offers
smoothies, protein shakes, smoothie bowls, juices, and food to nourish the body
and soul. To give a glimpse of what Rosy did during the pandemic, her efforts
included providing access and visibility for small local businesses via Facebook
pages such as: Takeout/Patio dining East of the River, Glastonbury and Surrounding
Towns, which she employed staff to manage, in addition to Glastonbury/East of the
River Shop Local to help small home based businesses, CT Fitness, Wellness and
Dance To Go and Takeout/patio dining Granby, East Granby and Suffield. Rosy
worked with a startup mask-making group in Simsbury, promoting them, providing
supplies, and driving whenever was needed in addition to distributing food and
supplies such as gloves to many underserved communities. She, in partnership
with the community, provided smoothies to our frontline workers at Hartford
Hospital, Backus Hospital, and Waterbury Hospital. Liquid Nirvana has been
curbside, so its “lobby of love” was used for various fundraisers including Oliver’s
Pajama Project and Toys for Tots, among other initiatives. Our community, and the
region, is a better place to live, work and play because of people like Rosy Kapur.

President's Award | Michael Chemerynski

Mike “Ski” has unlimited passion for family, community and helping others. He
retired from Pratt & Whitney in 2013 after 31 years. Mike and his wife Jane are now
long-time owners of their successful hair salon, Hair Today in Glastonbury with an
exceptionally talented team, a generational family friendly atmosphere, and creative
initiatives to support community causes. As a long-time member of the Chamber,
Mike understands the value of engaging and developing relationships for both
personal and business benefits. During the pandemic, Mike assumed two officer
positions as a highly engaged Networking Officer & the Membership Officer in
addition to serving on the board. Since last March, he has personally facilitated over
58 open leads groups, 18 Topic Tuesdays, and a few virtual “Happy Hour”
gatherings. He has scheduled hundreds of one-on-ones and is mentoring dozens.
He was instrumental in establishing the Young Professionals SPARC AM leads group
on Thursdays and participates in an Industry Specific Leads group that meets twice
per month. To say he is connected is an understatement. In the capacity of
Membership Officer, Mike is responsible for the reorganization and growth of our
Ambassador Committee into teams that work for its members during a pandemic. It
is proving to be highly successful as re-engagement evolves. Mike’s example of
selfless commitment to genuinely care for and support others has lead the
transformation of our chamber culture.
