Frisk
Frisk is the playable character and main protagonist of Undertale. After Frisk falls
into the Underground, they embark on a journey to return to the surface. Frisk is
the last of the eight humans to fall into the Underground after traveling to Mount
Ebott. Frisk is not the "fallen human" whom the player names at the beginning of
the game, but Frisk's name is only revealed in the True Pacifist Route.
Chara
Chara (/ˈkærə/ KARR-ə[note 1]), also known as the fallen human, is the first human
to fall into the Underground. Chara's name varies from game to game, as they
carry the name that the player enters at the start of their playthrough, although
Chara is noted to be the "true name". They are distinct from the controllable
character played throughout the entirety of Undertale, who is the eighth fallen
human.
Flowey
Flowey (/ˈflaʊi/)[1] is the first major character that the protagonist encounters in
Undertale. Flowey serves as the main antagonist for the majority of the game,
specifically the Neutral and True Pacifist routes, and can be considered a
deuteragonist for the Genocide Route. He provides an introduction to the
mechanics of encounters by sharing "friendliness pellets," which are actually
harmful bullets, revealing his philosophy of "KILL or BE KILLED".
Toriel
Toriel is the second character the protagonist encounters in Undertale. She saves
the protagonist from Flowey and guides them through the Ruins.
Sans
Sans (/sænz/) is the brother of Papyrus and a major character in Undertale. He
first appears in Snowdin Forest after the protagonist exits the Ruins. He serves
as a supporting character in the Neutral and True Pacifist routes, and as the final
boss and heroic antagonist in the Genocide Route.
Papyrus
Papyrus (/pəˈpaɪrəs/ pə-PY-rəs) is the brother of Sans and a major character in
Undertale. His main motive is to capture a human so he can become a member of
the Royal Guard, and finally have friends and popularity.
Undyne
Undyne (/ˈʌnˌdaɪn/ UN-dyne),[1] known as StrongFish91 on the UnderNet, is a
fish-like monster that leads the Royal Guard. Clad in her full suit of armor, she
pursues the protagonist through the entirety of Waterfall and is frequently evaded
or inadvertently thwarted by Monster Kid.
Alphys
Dr. Alphys (/ˈælfiːz/ AL-feez)[3] is a female, reptilian monster that lives in the lab in
western Hotland. She is the incumbent Royal Scientist, a position she was
awarded by Asgore after the disappearance of her predecessor.
Mettaton/Mettaton EX
Mettaton is a robot with a SOUL and was built by Alphys. Initially poised as an
entertainment robot turned human killing robot, Mettaton is later revealed to have
only acted as such so that Alphys could rescue the protagonist, feel important
and become closer to them. Mettaton is the sole television star of the
Underground.
Asgore Dreemurr
Asgore Dreemurr (/ˈæzɡɔːr ˈdɹiːmər/ AZ-gore DREE-mər)[1] is the ruler of the
Underground and its denizens, monsters. He is the ex-husband of Toriel, father of
Asriel Dreemurr, adoptive father of the first human, and the penultimate boss of
the Neutral Route. While not evil or malicious, he serves as one of the main
antagonists, planning to kill seven humans and use their SOULs to break the
barrier which traps the monsters in the Underground.
Asriel Dreemurr
Asriel Dreemurr (typically /ˈæzriəl ˈdɹiːmər/) is the biological child of Toriel and
Asgore and the adoptive brother of the first human. He serves as the final boss of
the True Pacifist Route.
Napstablook
Napstablook (/ˈnæpstəˌbluːk/),[1] known in the UnderNet as NAPSTABLOOK22, is
a melancholic ghost monster and musician/DJ who lives in Waterfall, first seen
and encountered in the Ruins as the game's first miniboss.
Mad Dummy
Mad Dummy is a ghost monster living inside a dummy located in the Garbage
Dump. They also serve as a mini-boss in Waterfall.
Monster Kid
Monster Kid is a young monster who stops at nothing to see their idol, Undyne, in
action.
Muffet
Muffet is a miniboss the protagonist encounters in Hotland. She runs a bake sale,
being very angry at passers-by who do not purchase anything from it, even
though buying something costs 9999 gold. She was a bought-in character during
the Kickstarter for the game.
Temmie (/ˈtɛ.miː/) is a species of monster in the Underground. They appear as a
unique enemy in Waterfall, residents of Temmie Village, and the vendor of Tem
Shop.
Contrary to popular belief, killing Temmie accrues EXP and is considered a kill by
the game, which causes a True Pacifist Route attempt to fail.
The Annoying Dog is a small, white, smiling dog representing the game's creator,
Toby Fox.
The Annoying Dog shows up periodically throughout the game, most often
around Papyrus. Whenever it shows up, it often somehow comedically ruins the
characters' plans.
W. D. Gaster was the royal scientist before Alphys, responsible for creating the
CORE. Gaster's Followers relay various explanations as to what happened to
Gaster. One iteration says that he "fell into his creation," another says that "his
experiments went wrong," and the last one says he "shattered across time and
space." Characters such as the River Person and Gaster's Followers hint at his
existence. Similar to Sans and Papyrus, he speaks in a typeface different from the
other characters.
