The 14th Annual 28th Street Metro Cruise®

August 24th and 25th, 2018

www.28thstreetmetrocruise.com

28th Street Metro Cruise® History

Each year on the 4th weekend in August, thousands of car enthusiasts flock to Grand Rapids historic 28th
Street to see and be seen. Spanning 15 miles and encompassing the communities of Grandville,
Wyoming, Grand Rapids, Kentwood and Cascade Township, the 28th Street Metro Cruise® celebrates
America’s love of the automobile and has become West
Michigan’s premiere automotive event.

2018 marks the 14th anniversary of the Metro Cruise® and
planning has begun to make it the largest event yet.
Presented by the Wyoming-Kentwood Chamber of
Commerce, the Metro Cruise® began as a way to attract
business back to 28th Street during the construction of the
M-6 bypass. The event has grown to annual attendance of
more than 275,000 visitors in 2017 and over 15,000 Classic
Cars including Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Low Riders,
Antiques and many more.

Since 2005, the Metro Cruise® has been celebrating classic roadsters and drawing car lovers of all
ages making it, at its core, a family-centered entertainment event. Many generations enjoy the bonanza
of classic cars by sitting along 28th street on lawn chairs with great grandparents and grandparents
reminiscing with their families about the cars that were COOL in their youth.

In addition to thousands of cars, attractions in past years have included: celebrity guests from the car
world, DJ entertainment, the Sock Hop, a car parts Swap Meet, car shows, live music and dancing,
screenings of car-related films, Metro Cruise Live aka Dream Wheels – a live car event showcasing
some of the rarest cars in the country. The event has added many new programming features in the
past 2 years. The entertainment for 2018 will include: Miss Metro Cruise Pin Up Girl Finale, 5 Main Stage
bands, Official Metro Merch, 19 food vendors, Pinewood Derby Race tracks, Dyno testing area, a 20’x60

relaxation tent, a shuttle service, and more! All these
events and features will be at the “hub” of Metro
Cruise® - Rogers Plaza in Wyoming.

Each year, the communities along 28th Street become
more vested in the event by providing much needed
sponsorship dollars. The Metro Cruise® puts dollars
back into the community by providing funds to booster
clubs and Scout Troops. Funds are also being set aside
to enhance a scholarship program through the
Wyoming-Kentwood Chamber of Commerce
Foundation.

Being one of the largest spectator attractions in West Michigan, the Metro Cruise® generates millions
of visitor dollars for our community businesses. In 2013, a survey showed that over 3.3 Million Dollars
was spent in the 28th Street corridor. This event also attracts age groups spanning from infants to
senior citizens and everyone in between. It is great way to spend a weekend car and people watching,
and best of all, admission is free of charge!

THE 28TH STREET METRO CRUISE®
---------------------------

As we enter the 14th year of the 28th Street Metro
Cruise®, we look back at the first 13 years of
this event with pride.
As the Metro Cruise® has grown and changed,
its simplistic approach has stayed the same.
The love affair West Michigan, and the entire
country, has with the classic and collector cars
is still going strong. We know the cars are the
stars and always will be. We invite every type of
car and car lover to attend our two day
showcase to celebrate these cars. This family
friendly event takes you to the heart of the
business sections from Grandville to Cascade.
It is 15 miles of cars, fun, and history. Please
take advantage of all of the great merchants in
this corridor, as they are part of what makes
this event happen.
We again thank our 28th Street Metro Cruise®
Main Sponsor, The Grand Rapids New Car
Dealers Association. Without their help and
vision, and all of our Sponsors support, we
would not be able to host the Metro Cruise®.
We also thank the City of Wyoming for their
leadership in keeping the 28th Street Metro
Cruise® a safe family event.
Enjoy your experience at this year’s 28th Street
Metro Cruise®.
Thank you,
Bob

Steve’s Antique Auto Repair

Steve’s Antique Auto Repair is a secret that needs to be shared. Nestled on Farra-
gut Street in Wyoming, you’ll always be greeted with a smile by Steve himself or his
dad Rick Sturim – an Air Force Veteran. If you’re fortunate, as I have been for years
now, you’ll get a tour of the shop. It’s a step back in time. Back when the cars didn’t
have ECU’s, ABS, computer controlled systems, or advanced cam and timing con-
trols. Everything here is the real deal. American iron kept running for decades
beyond it’s duty cycle. On one visit I was able to see a 1935 Ford on the hoist getting
a new exhaust for its Nailhead engine. Mere feet from it was the stripped down
shell of a 1926 Model T. Just the bare metal up on saw horses with parts being fabri-

cated back to its glory with sheet metal cut,
trimmed, folded and manipulated just as it was
over a century ago. Step into the back room to
see the chassis of the Model T patiently awaiting it’s body. Neatly arranged
and in process were 5 more Classics getting everything from water pumps to
doors. I spotted the turbo Corvair against the wall and peeked into its interior
to see boxes of 8-track tapes. I wouldn’t expect any less!

Steve’s Antique Auto Repair started it journey as a father and son with a pas-
sion for cars. Turning wrenches
and both repairing and upgrading cars for themselves at home. Talk
about home schooled, Rick would put a range of wrenches on the
floor and teach little Steve how to count fractions. He knew them
before he ever learned it in school! Dad had a ‘69 Caddy he traded
for a Model A pickup. That’s where the
love for the REALLY old classics came
from. In 1990, the collection and need
for space pushed them to the building
they now occupy. When the word got out that the father-son duo could tackle any-
thing from brake jobs to full engine overhauls,
the business was born. They started small but
when a source like this gets out, the cars started
rolling in. With just 2,100 square feet of space,
they ran out quickly. They purchased the adja-
cent building and connected them, totaling over
5,000 square feet.

But it wasn’t that simple. You see, in order to
work on cars as a business in Michigan you need

to be certified. Certified in EVERYTHING
from antique to new. That’s when Rick
and Steve bucked the system. They con-
tacted Ken Sikkema in Lansing to discuss
the problem with the laws. If they didn’t
have interest in the ‘new stuff’ they
shouldn’t have to be certified in it. Thanks
to the Sturim duo the legislation now
allows a limited certification that stops at 1973. This legislation opened up
avenues for many mechanics in Michigan with a breadth of knowledge for the
6

classics. The new law was signed into action in 1994, and Steve’s Antique Auto has been legally operating ever
since.
Being part of the community is paramount to the Sturim family. Rick is on his second time around as Post Com-
mander for the American Legion and was on the City Commissioner committee. They actively participate in the
Wyoming-Kentwood Area Chamber of Commerce. Rick’s wife Harriet volunteers at Veteran clinics and the
Wives of Veteran’s organization. Rick and Steve started the Firefighter and Policemen of Wyoming Appreciation
Day.
It’s hard to believe they have any time outside of work and the community efforts. Believe me, their ‘hobby’ is still
running strong. Their 1932 Sprint Car continues to win awards and accolades from the judges at events. It won
the Amelia Award at the Concours D’elegance at Amelia Island in 2017. The land speed car, (built AND driven by
Steve) has set records since 2010.
Many of us dream of a garage large enough to work on cars all day. I know I do! This father and son duo has made
this hobby-to-career dream a reality. They fought the law and won. They have earned their expertise status in
the car world. They help make the community a better place and continue to do so on a daily basis. (It’s not
unusual to get one of Marge’s Donut Den donuts when you stop in!)
Check out their website at www.StevesAntiqueAutoRepair.com, and follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
Stop in for a tour to relive the good ol’ days of motoring. The lobby is PACKED with collectibles. It’s a museum
that lives and breathes with passion.

Hall of Fame Fisherman Mark Martin is coming
to the 28th St. Metro Cruise®

That's right, Mark Martin will be at Steve's Antique
Auto Repair's Booth at the 14th Annual 28th St. Metro
Cruise® on August 24th and 25th at Rogers Plaza.
Today, Mark as fishing promoter, travels extensively
throughout the U.S. and Canada doing tournaments,
TV Shows, Outdoor Writer Events, Seminars, and
teaching walleye wisdom - especially leading kids
fishing clinics. He also has published various books
and videos to help walleye aficionados get more
'eyes in the net.
In his home state of Michigan, he’s been called “Mr.
Walleye at Night”, averaging more than 600 walleye
per season in the 6 to 12 pound range. The key to
Mark’s success is a history of walleye fishing devel-
oped over three generations of Martins.
At the Metro Cruise®, Mark will display his restored
1969 AMX. He will talk fishing, hunting and cars. Stop
at Steve's booth and get an autograph from this multi
talented gentleman.
