For him and another two of the
culprits, Willowgate was akin to a
springboard to success. Following
a 25-year period, during which he
pursued further studies and estab-

denda returned to active politics in
2013. He was appointed as Speak-

arguably the best Speaker to grace
this office since Independence.

As for the new Minister of For-

Shava has not looked back since
Willowgate. He served a term as
Zimbabwe’s ambassador to China
and another as representative at
the United Nations in New York.
From this week, he shoulders the
onerous responsibility of mending
Zimbabwe’s sour relations with the
powerful Western nations.

Perhaps, like Mudenda at par-

case, the appointment of Shava to

Still, Willowgate has also exposed
the limits of the Zimbabwean gov-
ernment’s tolerance for investigative
reporting. Soon after the Chronicle
began investigating the scandal, its
crusading editor, Geoffrey Nyarota,
was promoted by Zimbabwe News-
papers, the government-controlled
publisher and Nyarota was effectively
silenced by being given a headquar-
ters public relations job.

Despite appeals by prominent
writers and politicians, Mugabe has
refused to reverse the decision, argu-
ing that the new post’s higher salary
should be considered Nyarota’s “re-
ward.”

In many ways Willowgate un-
folded in a way that connoisseurs
of Western scandals would appreci-
ate. The first stories in the Bulawayo
Chronicle produced blustering deni-
als. Callistus Ndlovu, the minister of
industry and technology, called the
first article “a shoddy piece of slan-
der conceived by tricksters and mob-
sters.” Another minister challenged
Nyarota to a fight.

Yet once it became clear that the
allegations had merit, Mugabe acted
to preserve his own reputation for
integrity by appointing the Sandu-
ra commission. Over seven weeks
the commission called 72 witnesses,
including six cabinet ministers, two
deputy ministers, three members of
Parliament, two senior army officers

Back home, Moyo has been
struggling to explain Alan’s where-
abouts to his siblings who often
ask after their older brother.

His mother has been struggling
to cope without her son, Moyo
explains.

“It is tough for us at home, we
are used to having him at around.
Having to explain to his siblings
what happened to their brother
is not easy. I am very sad, so are
his mother and siblings. We just
pray he gets bail soon because we
would want him to get a fair trial
from home. I think it is his right,”
Moyo said.

Moyo describes Allan as an obe-
dient child who would never en-
gage in violence.

“Alan is a good boy; he loves
his books. He is an obedient child
and loves hanging out with his
friends. He could never cause any
trouble,” he said.

Alan, a student leader from the
University of Zimbabwe (UZ) al-
legedly addressed commuters at
a bus rank in Harare, calling for
a violent revolt against President
Emmerson Mnangagwa, the state
alleges.

According to his father, Allan
was arrested at Harare Central
Police Station where he had gone
to give lunch to his friends from
the Amalgamated Rural Teachers’
Union of Zimbabwe (Artuz).

“When he started getting in-
volved in student politics, I sat
him down and explained my res-
ervations, but he assured me that
he would be safe. I just told him
to be careful. The day that he got
arrested, we were all shocked. He
had taken food to some of his
friends in Artuz who were at Ha-
rare Central, but the police said
they were looking for him. He
never came back home,” Moyo
said.

Battle for leadership rocks ZCTU

CHRIS MAHOVE

CRACKS have emerged in the
Zimbabwe Congress of Trade
Unions (ZCTU) ahead of the
labour body’s elective congress
scheduled for December.
Sources within the country’s
largest labour representative body
say two factions have emerged in
the general council, the highest
decision-making body in between
congresses, as the battle for the
control of the country’s largest la-
bour body erupts.
The battle has been politicised
amid contested allegations that
a rival camp linked to the ruling
Zanu PF is plotting to overthrow
the Peter Mutasa-led executive.
The rival faction, which has the
organisation’s deputy secretary
general Thomas Masvingwe de-
nies association with Zanu PF,
arguing the allegations are being
pushed by rivals who want to cling
onto power.
While the ZCTU has always
been perceived to be an extension
of the opposition MDC Alliance
