Zim judiciary and chief justices –
from the pioneer Bisset to Malaba

The NewsHawks continues with a series of articles written by Johannesburg-based Zimbabwean lawyer Tererai Mafukidze about the history and politics, as well as the dynamics of appointing
a chief justice in Zimbabwe, tracing the genesis of the issue back to 1927, five years after Southern Rhodesia rejected in a referendum joining the South African Union, when the first head of
the judiciary was installed.  Mafukidze also did the research on the trial and execution of Mbuya Nehanda which we carried recently and then used parts of it in our story last week.

Women on the Move

STARTING this week The NewsHawks introduces a section on its digital publication covering issues about women’s endeavours – under Ladies’ Choices: Women on the Move - to
provide women with opportunities to succeed in their professional and personal lives. Empowering women is empowering families, communities and societies. The coverage’s key
objectives are to highlight women’s careers, endeavours, businesses, financial issues and advance their career growth, as well as contribute to fulfilling their hopes and aspirations.
Through this initiative, our goal is ultimately to contribute, while also helping to secure an equal future for our fellow female citizens, entrepreneurs, employees, clients, consum-
ers and the communities we serve. In recent years conversations around patriarchy and social tenets of equality have been at the forefront of feminism, but now campaigns and
demands for equality are nearing a fever pitch. However, economic equality – which matters the most – is still a pipe dream.

2018. In the process, she has won several national awards in 2021 under WOBA, namely Zimbabwe’s Top 100 Women
Leader and Entrepreneurs of the year as well as Businesswoman of the Year Award.  As a businesswoman, she is driven
by passion, dedication and determination in her work. She is also organised and flexible as her position allows her to
explore new business opportunities to help economic development and ensure a better future for Zimbabwe. In one of
her motivation speeches, Aleshina urged women to work hard to succeed. “To be successful, you need to be hardwork-
ing, confident and know who you are as we are special and unique. Women have special a purpose in life, therefore we
should never compromise their integrity,” she said. “Always do what’s right and most importantly help others.” Aleshi-
na says even if she is a foreigner in Zimbabwe, she understands that Zimbabwean people need freedom to enjoy their
rights, build businesses and provide for as well as protect their families. In one interview, she said she loves Zimbabwe
not just because it is a beautiful country, but also due to the fact that it has a lot of opportunities, resources, improving
investment climate and a bright future.

Unofficial president calls for emergeZambians’ effort on Wednesday while looking forward
to a tougher contest on Saturday at the same venue.
“It’s going to get even better, the Zambians have
something to prove,” Dawson told The NewsHawks on
Thursday. “Everyone thinks their (Zambia) rugby is not
of a good quality. But it is. They played with intensity in
some parts of the game, and I haven’t seen a team tackle
against us like that in a long time. When they had the
opportunity, they did come at us yesterday (Wednesday),
which was good to see. There were a lot of good things
to take.”
Dawson acknowledged some areas of Zimbabwean
concern from Wednesday’s match, which he said will be
rectified as the squad continue to gel in camp.
“Look, we haven’t played in two years and guys need
to get in shape and fit into patterns,” said the 53-year-old
ex-international flanker. “It’s about spending time on the
field. Look, we are happy with lots of areas, and there is
still a lot of work to be done in a lot of the other areas. We
need to work on our line-outs, scrummaging, you know,
all the areas we feel we are not accurate enough, the kind
of things we need to make sure we are polished. We just
need to be clinical.”
Wednesday’s team was a blend of seasoned players,
the lesser experienced ones as well as newcomers.
The Sables management will be hugely encouraged by
the showing of some of the new call-ups.
