Issue 19, 26 Feb 2021 Just who is Elizabeth
‘Stambeni’ Musaka?
JONATHAN MBIRIYAMVEKA
THERE have been murmurings on social media following the
recent death of Zimdancehall star Soul Jah Love aged 31 with
users asking if Elizabeth Stambeni Musaka was his real mother.
This came to light following a picture of Soul Jah Love
standing beside his mother’s tombstone whose date of death
reads as 12-08-82. There is no specific date or month given
but only the year 1956 as the date of birth.
Now the question is: Was Stambeni (Sithembeni as
the late artist would sing) his real mother? Of course,
Soul Jah Love first hinted at his mother when he
penned the hit song Pamamonya Ipapo.
“Tovadyira bhonzo nekuwonda kudai, ti-
nongomira pamamonya ipapo, zvidya mafuta
zviya zvisingakore takanomira pamamonya
ipapo! maHorse zvimaBoss tinongomira
pamamonya ipapo, Chiba-ba chigunduru,
mwana waSithembeni, pamamonya ipapo,”
he sings
Considering that his mother died in
1982, way before Soul Jah Love was born,
how then did she give birth to the music star?
Soul Jah Love was born Soul Muzavazi
Musaka on 22 November 1989 at the Ave-
nues Clinic, at least according to his brother
Solomon Musaka.
“That is his correct date of birth and he was
born at the Avenues Clinic that you can check
for his record it’s there. But on the date of
death of his mother I am not sure what could
have happened but I suppose it’s a catastrophic
typo error which we didn’t know,” he said.
Word has it that Soul Jah Love’s mother died
when he was two-years-old before his grand-
mother took him in.
But was an error committed in inscribing
his mother’s date of death on her tombstone as
1982 instead of 1992?
Also reached for comment Partson “Chi-
paz” Chimbodza had another school of
thought, saying that both dates could be cor-
rect.
“Well, this question can only be answered
by his relatives whether or not it was a mis-
take. However, in our tradition we have this
notion of everyone’s child. You have a biolog-
ical mother and also your mother’s sisters are
also your mothers. So like I said, it depends
with the family, perhaps they should know how
and why this happened,” he said.
Soul Jah Love was declared a provincial hero
by Zanu PF and was buried next to his father,
Ephraim Ticharwa Musaka.
Musaka (senior) died on 18 February 2005.
According to the family members, Soul Jah Love’s
father was a liberation war veteran who served as a
Zpra intelligence officer.
And his mother, Stambeni, was in the Zanu PF
women’s league national executive, which was headed
by the late heroine Sally Mugabe in the early 1980s.
Zanu PF acting secretary for youth Tendai Chirau
confirmed the political history of the late musician’s
family, saying Soul Jah Love was also an active member
of the ruling party.
While thousands of fans attended the burial at War-
ren Hills provincial heroes acre in Harare, there were also
gatherings as far as London, where Soul Jah Love fans
gathered in their numbers singing and dancing to his
songs.
Videos of the scenes have also trended on social media
showing how much Soul Jah Love’s music had gained pop-
ularity beyond Zimbabwe’s borders.
While most people agree that Soul Jah Love was im-
mensely talented, there are those who feel he lived in the
fast lane.
He was a lyrical genius, yes! But while talent can open
doors, it takes character to keep you at the top.
If you listen to his words of wisdom in songs like Kana
Ndafa, Ndichafa Rinhi, Mwari Ndovatenda on Bodyslam
Riddim, and Ndini Uya Uya, you really appreciate his great
artistry.
But as one switches to Yeke Yeke, where he explicitly sings
about sex to Pamamonya Ipapo and Naka Dhula Dhaka where he
glorifies drugs, you begin to wonder what sort of impact he makes on
his fans, the majority of whom are ghetto youths.

long-awaited emergence of Zimba-
bwe from almost a century of colonial
and settler rule.
What a privilege, how exciting it
was for me, the newcomer, to witness
such an eminent moment in
Zimbabwe’s literary history. It was
a moment of bloom, of a multitude
of voices pressing forward, writers
back from exile, or from the war, or
from their solitary desks where they
had been hiding and waiting. The
winds of change, which had seen the
end of colonial rule in most other Af-
rican countries two decades before,
had finally blown across the country,
clearing the sky for the Zimbabwean
flag to soar into the blue.
‘Communication Through Liter-
ature’ was the theme the organisers
had chosen for the Harare conven-
tion, which to me seemed to preclude
controversy from the outset. This
was soon confirmed. A short man
with a pompous air about him and
serious-looking spectacles chaired
the proceedings. He was addressed
throughout as ‘Mister Chair’ and
he made sure that the deliberations
remained as general and non-con-
troversial as the theme suggested.
This was Emmanuel Ngara, as I was
told, literature professor and current
