Foreign Minister Sibusiso Moyo was featured in an in-
terview on Deutsche Welletelevision, a German channel,
during the Covid-19 lockdown. The programme was re-
played this week.
His remarks sparked heated discussion in this country,
particularly on social media where citizens digested the im-
plications of the government’s stance on various issues rang-
ing from foreign relations to economic policy.
Sarah Kelly, the presenter of the programme titled Con-
flict Zone, asked tough questions, making important fol-
low-ups and clearly showing she had done her homework
by conducting the necessary research.
The interview brought into sharp focus Zimbabwe’s fal-
tering international re-engagement effort. Moyo is the gov-
ernment’s top diplomat, but he increasingly comes across as
unconvincing because the regime he represents is failing. It
can’t reform.
Without reform, it will become more difficult for the gov-
ernment to ensure political stability and recovery. There are
no shortcuts to democratic progress and socio-economic
prosperity.
