GIST is the abbreviation of Generating

Interaction between Schemata and Text
which is one of a reading strategy used to
clarify the main idea of a text.
Generate means to produce, while
Interaction means a mutual or reciprocal
action or influence. Schemata, according to
Merriam Webster dictionary, is a mental
codification of experience that includes a
particular organized way of perceiving
cognitively and responding to a complex
situation or set of stimuli. In the other word,
schemata means a prior experience or a
prior knowledge of someone. Text, in
Merriam Webster dictionary is a source of
information or authority, which also means
as a passage or verse as a source of
information.
In conclusion GIST is a strategy that
conducts the interaction between readers
prior knowledge or prior experience and the
text have been read.

Generating Interactions
between Schemata and Texts (GIST)
is a summarization procedure that
helps students digest complex texts
by requiring contextual word learning.
GIST explicitly combines the most
important words with reading and
writing to comprehend complex texts.

Cunningham (1982) in Sari

(2018) stated that GIST is an

acronym for generating interaction

between schemata and texts. It is a

summarizing strategy. Effective

summarizing leads to

improvementof student’s reading

comprehension in learning process.

Summarizing requires students to

focus on the main ideas of a text

and to decide what is important

without omitting key ideas.

Strategy
Purposes?

Bouchard (2005) in Sari (2018) stated
that GIST (Generating Interaction
between Schemata and Text)
provides an opportunity for student
to identify important vocabulary and
synthesize important piece of
information into summary statement
to show the gist of reading. It
facilitates understanding how the
“part” fit together to make the
“whole”. This strategy also shows
them how to distinguish between
important and less important pieces
of information and how to group
similar ideas together.

Explicitly teaching ‘Get the Gist’:

Step 1

Choose an informational paragraph from a
science, history, etc. textbook. Scan the text
pulling out any key ideas from the text
features. Read the text. (Pick a textbook piece
that contains some trivia, as well as several
ideas). Put the text on the overhead or board.
Read it aloud to students and demonstrate
deleting the trivia, putting a line through the
unnecessary text.

Step 2

Continue reading and
demonstrate picking out the who,
what, when, where, why of the
paragraph and related important
information.

Step 3

Demonstrate pulling together the
above information into a 10/20-
word ‘gist’ or summary.

Step 4

In pairs, guide students in completing
a ‘Gist’ sheet or ‘Sum It Up’* sheet.
Support students in creating
summaries until they can do them
independently. The number of words
in a ‘gist’ summary can vary.
