We are delighted to have the esteemed presence of British contemporary dancers, Mr. James Pett and Mr. Travis Clausen-Knight, as our special guests. They will be presenting their highly acclaimed "IMAGO," which has garnered praise during their European tour, captivating audiences worldwide with their creativity and astonishing skills. Mr. James Pett has also choreographed a contemporary piece fusing Thai and Western cultures specifically for the Bangkok City Ballet, in which he will be performing. This performance marks its debut in Thailand and is sure to bring forth new expressions and inspiration. BRITISH COUNCIL THAILAND GREETING MESSAGE On behalf of the British Council, it is my great pleasure to congratulate the Bangkok City Ballet on the Bangkok City Ballet Dance Gala 2023, which features a collaboration between Bangkok City Ballet and the UK’s talented dancers and choreographers, James Pett and Travis Clausen-Knight. In addition to presenting a duet “IMAGO”, James and Travis have organised workshops and masterclasses for Thai dancers to exchange creative processes and innovative practice. James has also worked with the Bangkok City Ballet to explore traditional Thai dancing with fusion and modernisation from his experience to develop a new choreographic process and movements, and will be featured as part of the performance tonight. This collaborative project between the Bangkok City Ballet and the UK artists is enabled by the British Council Connections Through Culture grant programme, which supports new creative connections, exchanges and collaborations between Southeast Asia and the UK. Since 2019, we have administered 25 grants to 50 Thai and UK artists to work together on a variety of artistic and creative projects across diverse art forms both in the UK and Thailand. We are delighted to have this opportunity to support this excellent artistic collaboration, which nurtures and deepens artistic partnerships and friendships between Thailand and the UK, and has strengthened cultural connections and mutual understanding going forward. I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Bangkok City Ballet on resuming their performance for the first time in four years with the staging of "Dance Gala 2023" on June 15th 2023.  Bangkok City Ballet, the first professional ballet troupe in Thailand, was founded by Ms. Masako Hirata in 1996. Since launching its first professional performance in Thailand in 2003 with The Nutcracker, the Bangkok City Ballet’s members have steadily increased, leading to many outstanding performances by the organization.  It is a great pleasure to see on the year of the 50th anniversary of Japan-ASEAN’s friendship and cooperation, Thai and Japanese dancers performing on the same stage at the Bangkok City Ballet. SYNOPSIS Don Quixote Divertissement This ballet was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa to the music of Ludwig Minkus and first presented in 1869. Don Quixote is a romantic comedy, a love story between Kitri and Basilio. Besides, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza live a series of adventures around the couple. The adventure of Don Quixote and Sancho lead them to Kitri, the daughter of an innkeeper, who is avoiding marriage to the wealthy Gamache in favour of her true love, Basilio, the barber. Ever the romantic, Don Quixote helps to save Kitri from marrying without love and helps a young lover to live together. In Dance Gala 2023, Bangkok City Ballet presents you the divertissement of Don Quixote to bring you the enjoyment. GUEST PROFILE James Pett competed as a gymnast for ten years before graduating from the Laban Dance Centre with a first-class degree and was awarded The Marion North Award for outstanding achievement in performance. From 2011- 2013 James danced for Richard Alston Dance Company. As well as touring internationally with the company, he was awarded New York Times critics’ top dance pick for 2013 from his performance of the duet in Alston's Unfinished Business. James joined Company Wayne McGregor in 2013, where he toured several of Wayne McGregor’s works internationally over 6 years. Highlights during his time include Tree of Codes, collaborative production performing alongside dancers from the Paris Opera Ballet, dancing on the Bolshoi Theatre stage for the Benois De La Danse gala of stars and dancing a duet with Alessandra Ferri as part of the BBC Performance Live documentary broadcasted on BBC Two. From 2019 James progressed into becoming an independent artist he was selected to be the international guest choreographer with Bangkok City Ballet, where he choreographed Unfolding on the full company. GUEST PROFILE TRAVIS CLAUSEN-KNIGHT Travis Clausen-Knight was born in South Africa, Travis has developed a significant career dancing for choreographers such as Wayne McGregor CBE, Michael Clark, Matthew Bourne, Bawren Tavaziva, Holly Noble, Tim Podesta and Alexander Whitley. As a dancer for these renowned artists he has undertaken international tours performing on stages such as the Bolshoi, New York City Centre, Sadlers Wells, Palais Garnier, Bastille and many more. Among a number of other awards in both film and dance, Travis received the award for Best Choreography with: Exposure at the Korean International Contemporary Dance Competition (2021); A Space Left Blank at the New Renaissance Film festival (2022). With Exposure, he also received the Audience Award and Best Performance Award at the Solocoreografico Festival 2022. He has choreographed a variety of works such as Linear, Exposure, ProXimity, Stutter and Informal Between which have all had international premieres in countries such as Japan, Australia, Italy, Korea and UK. After leaving Wayne McGregor’s Company in 2019, Travis has continued on as a freelance dancer and choreographer. Together with James Pett he has been creating several works such as Man of the Crowd, Eye of the Storm, Thou Art the Man, I Stood Amid the Roar and several more. Additionally, he has successfully directed a number of dance films such as A Space Left Blank, honorably mentioned for best choreography at the New Renaissance Film Festival, Doldrums music video by Silverhours (2023) and Beast by Veronica Furman (2023). His long lasting artistic partnership with James Pett led them to create their company Pett | Clausen-Knight. GUEST PROFILE RUIKA YOKOYAMA Ruika Yokoyama started ballet in Niigata, Japan at the age of 4. At the age of 15, she traveled alone to the Portuguese National Ballet School. During her studies there, she performed leading roles in productions. She was recruited by Nina Ananiashvili, who was serving as the artistic director, to join STATE BALLET OF GEORGIA at the age of 18, as a special guest director for their graduation performance. Despite being a corps de ballet member at the time, she was selected as the lead in "The Sleeping Beauty" at the age of 20 and was promoted to soloist that same year. She later became a principal dancer and performed leading roles in most of the ballet company's productions. After leaving the company, she held workshops and ballet seminars primarily in Europe. PRODUCTION TEAM DIRECTOR Masako Hirata Masako Hirata was born in Tokyo, Japan. Masako began her ballet training at Hisako Fukuzawa Ballet in Setagaya, Tokyo. Enrolled in Hakodate Ballet Academy and graduated from Tachibana Ballet School in March 1983 as the 31st graduating class of Tachibana Ballet School. Since Masako was still a student of Tachibana Ballet School, she joined ballet performances with Maki Asami Ballet Company as corps de ballet and also as soloist. Under the guidance of Asami Maki, Kyozou Mitani, Yuriko Kawaguchi and any other. She appeared at the premiere performance of “Swan Lake” choreographed by Terry Westmorland, and performed Big Swans, Italian Princess. She appeared in all company’s performances such as “Sleeping Beauty”, “Raymonda”. She also performed in “NHK Night of Ballet” and “Performing Arts Festival Tour” of “Cultural Properties Department of the Agency for Cultural Affairs”. Having discerned the possibilities and future potential of Classical Ballet in Thailand, she established Bangkok City Ballet in 1996. Annual school performance has been held once every year until present. This year marked Bangkok City Ballet School’s 26th Junior Ballet Concert which was the annual school performance. Bangkok City Ballet Company’s first full length performance, performing by Thai local ballet dancers was held in 2007 “Sleeping Beauty” has been completed successfully. Bangkok City Ballet Company performed “The Nutcracker” full length in December 2013 with Ms.Kirsty Martin and Mr.Damien Welch from Australian Ballet and Asami Sakanishi from Asami Maki Ballet Company as guest dancers. Since then, Bangkok City Ballet Company started to be the active professional ballet company in Thailand. Bangkok City Ballet is continuing to transmit talented Thai dancers and choreographers to the society and to the world.


PRODUCTION TEAM ASSISTANT Director Sarassanan Chaisinlapin Sarassanan Chaisinlapin was originally from Lamphun, Thailand, and had been trained classical ballet at Chiang Mai Ballet Academy since age of four. Sarassanan graduated Advanced 2 in classical ballet of RAD of UK and has been awarded in jazz ballet by CSTD, Australia. She is certified in Ballet teaching (CBTS program) by RAD; assessed in Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) Junior, Senior & Advanced Programs; and certified in completion the Vaganova Teacher Course for teaching Vaganova method.Participating in many dance competitions, held in Thailand and overseas, she won the prizes in various styles of dance; classical ballet, neo-classical, jazz dance, contemporary dance and national dance. For example; she won the Ballet Championship from the 28th C.S.T.D. Theatrical Festival in Perth, Australia (2007), she also won an aggregate trophy from the 8th Asia-Pacific Dance Competition in Singapore (2006), etc. Sarassanan was first appeared with the Bangkok City Ballet during 2009. In 2014, she was promoted to a principle dancer. Her repertoire includes The Nutcracker, Don Quixoté, Coppélia, Raymonda, Swan Lake, Flower Festival in Genzano, Sleeping Beauty and La Bayadère. In addition to ballet, she is also active as a dancer in productions of new promising choreographers. Sarassanan was invited to perform in the “Chorea Gala 2019”, an international dance festival, in Bratislava, The Slovak Republic. As dance instructor, Sarassanan has experienced in teaching ballet since 2000; mainly Chiang Mai Ballet Academy and Bangkok City Ballet School, and many more schools and studios in Bangkok. Sarassanan provides teaching classical ballet for junior and adult students, RAD syllabus class, stretching class, repertoire variation, and coaching. She also had choreographed many routines for junior students, both classical and neo-classical. AssistanT Director Naporn Wattanakasaem Naporn Wattanakasaem was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand. She graduated with the BA in dance from University of North Carolina, Greensboro in 2013 and came back to join Bangkok City Ballet as a choreographer, dancer and instructor since then. Naporn performed both contemporary dance and ballet and choreographed and directed many works for the company including “Rather Be”(2014), “Fourth Dimension”(2015), “Initiation”(2016), “Norm”(2016), “Silent”(2017-2018) and Ruam-Atta-Rak (2021). She also did the dance films such as “Mystified”(2012) which was selected to present at the American College Dance Festival Association 2013 and the Salt Lake 2013 Screendance Festival. In 2018, Naporn received the best choreography award from the ATOD International Dance Competition and was selected as a short-listed candidate for the Women of the Future Award, Southeast Asia, in Art and Culture category. In 2019 Naporn completed MFA in choreography from Jacksonville University. She is interested in exploring the relationship between performing body and its environment as a metaphor for the interconnection between the self and the world we live in.


PRODUCTION TEAM Ballet Education Director TIROLARN KRITYAKIERNE Starting ballet at Tokyo Ballet Institute at the age of four; Tirolarn or Ting has continued her dance in Bangkok with Kanchana Jalavicharana, William Morgan and Thanpuying Varaporn Pramoj at Varaporn-Kanchana Ballet School and later with Pornpimol Kanthatham at Pornpimol-Sophatai Ballet School and Bangkok City Ballet School, under the direct guidance of Masako Hirata. She successfully completed RAD Advanced level in 1998 and completed BCBS curriculum in 2002, taking the role of "Princess Aurora" in the full-length Sleeping Beauty. She took many dance workshops held in Singapore, Japan and Malaysia. She was selected as an Outstanding Youth (Art Section) by Her Royal Highness Sirindhorn in 2003. Ting graduated from the faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University (Hons) and Chanapatana International Design Institute in 2007. She is also Certified in Ballet Teaching (CBTS) by RAD, Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) and continuing professional development in Vaganova methods annually with Pedro Carneiro. Teaching at BCBS as a full-time instructor since 2004, she also joined BCB as a company member and was BCB principal dancer during 2005-2012, taking many leading roles and solos in Bangkok City Ballet annual productions. She was invited as a guest dancer to various performances including “Spring Ballet Concert 2010" in Isesaki, Japan. Moreover, she was a guest lecturer for the faculty of Fine and Applied Arts at Chulalongkorn University (2004-2006) and the faculty of Fine and Applied Arts at Thammasart University (2008-2010). Presently, Tirolarn is Bangkok City Ballet School’s Ballet Education Director. Technical Director Viladda Vanadurongwan Viladda Vannadurongwan, A member of "Crescent Moon Theatre" founders, Viladda has many experiences in theatrical field both directing and acting. She is an assistant director (continuity) to "Bar 21" film, by Director Euthana Mukdasanit, modifier and director child's play, "Max und Meli", in the name of theatre group "Puen Dek" Besides her talent on directing, she also experienced in acting by starring in "The Exception & The Rule" by Director Bertold Brecht and "Chukchok" theatrical play, directed by Dr. Wolfram Mehring, Music Composed and Directed by Bruce Gaston. At present Viladda is a founder and board of director of Grass Root Micro Media Foundation and the theatre group "Makhampom" and "Theatre 28" also managing director of Karaked Entertainment Co., Ltd. Begin working with BCB since 2003.


PRODUCTION TEAM Scenery Designer Supatanit Thitachaiyasit Graduating from Bangkok University, Supatanit Thitachaiyasit or Rong has been a propsmaster for the performance and plays of the faculty of Communication Arts, he has many experiences on stage design, and proved himself to be the famous scenery designer. After graduated, he has worked with the professional theatre production house such as Dass Entertainment, Dream Box and also with Bangkok City Ballet where he started to make a scenery for ballet production. Rong started working with BCB in The Nutcracker 2003 for the first production and he continuously making marvelous scenes for BCB until now both Junior Ballet Concerts and The Bangkok City Ballet Performances. Lighting Designer Arunroj Thomma Arunroj Thomma is a lighting designer based in Bangkok,Thailand. After graduated from Dramatics Art, Faculty of Art, Chulalongkorn University. She started a career path as one of lighting team (Lighting Operator and Lighting Designer) in Khon Performance sine 2010-2022 was held at Main Hall, Thailand Cultural center. She has worked with professional production in many fields such as Khon performance, “Muskim” live in Bangkok in Bangkok dance and music theatre festival 2022, also worked with the Opera Siam in Jesus Christ Superstar, La Boheme Sama The faithful son, Anne frank, The Silent prince ,directed by Somtao Sucharitkul.
