“True connoiseurs do not drink wine,
they taste secrets”

ABOUT US

TERRA is ideally located on the north shore of Consecon Lake which
provides cool lake breezes that blow over our vineyards during the
hot, dry summer days and moderating lake effects which help
insulate from the cold wintery nights.
The vineyard is a wine lover’s paradise situated on a rolling landscape
rising northwards from the picturesque lake in the heart of Prince
Edward County, Ontario’s newest wine region and youngest appella-
tion in Ontario’s VQA wine scene.
Prince Edward County is an easy drive from Toronto or Ottawa. This
small, yet vibrant, corner of rural Ontario has been passed by voya-
geurs, settled by Empire Loyalists, favoured by rum-runners, home to
canneries and orchards, and is now acclaimed for its wineries,
gastronomy, artists and thriving artisan community. Well renowned
Sandbanks Provincial Park boasts three sandy beaches and stretches
12 kms across windswept Lake Ontario. It is the largest fresh water
mount sand bar and dune system in the world attracting close to
750,000 visitors each year to its sandy beaches. A steady stream of
top Toronto sommeliers and chefs has also moved to “The County”
including Michael Potters and Jamie Kennedy. A short drive from
TERRA lies the beating heart of The County: the Town of Picton.
Here you’ll find picturesque B & B’s, fine local restaurants, bistros, ice
cream parlours, studios and galleries, many of which are situated
along the main street.
The diversity of the landscapes within The County mirrors the diversity
of TERRA’s wines—from fruity, aromatic Native American varieties, to
classic European varietals, to the French-American wines blending
the best of both worlds.

TERRA, BACK TO ITS ROOTS

TERRA’s co-founders, soon after World War II at a very young age, were
engaged in vineyard and viticulture practices taught by their forefathers
through their respective family farming activities.
These traditions continued and allowed them to farm the land for
personal consumption in order to survive the most challenging post war
economic times as well as to derive small extra income.
Our co-founders’ farming mentality helps a lot. It’s impossible to be a
successful farmer without the same qualities required by sustainability:
thriftiness, efficiency and a respect for the “Terra.”
We have grown up in a world where energy and materials were assu-
med to be unlimited. Changing wasteful behaviour requires conscious effort.
These activities consisted of manually planting, growing and grafting
their own vines culminating in modest in-house development and
production of vinefera vines of extreme grade and quality.
Another anchor for us is to emulate our grandparents, “Nonni,” who
grew up during two World Wars in Europe. Their behaviour had to do
with saving money, reusing items and not throwing stuff away.
Sounds like sustainability, doesn’t it? Remember the constant nagging to
“turn off the lights?” It all makes more sense now! TERRA’s roots are truly
authentic and are cast in the rich history of its Friulani viticulture pioneers.

TERRA’S FRIULIAN CO-FOUNDERS

Although relatively young - less than a decade old - TERRA is steeped
in history. The co-founders, Ottavio Marchi and Bruno Tam (born in
Friuli, Italy) ventured into planting TERRA’s first vines in 2007 in its
transformation of a vacant 100 acre farm. Friuli is an area of north-
eastern Italy with its own particular cultural and historical identity. For
centuries viticulture has always been an important part of the food
culture within the Fruili Region which has been a leader in Italy and
throughout the world for incorporating modern winemaking tech-
niques while not losing sight of the past. In many ways these Friulian
wines, especially the whites, have achieved remarkable world class
quality and recognition alongside their winemakers who continue to
be trendsetters in the rebirth of Italian wines and vintages. From their
respective small Friulian origins, (Towns of Domanins, Province of
Pordenone and Goricizza, Province of Udine) our two 85 plus year old
hard working Friuliani “pioneers,” in true classical immigrant style, led
TERRA’s humble beginnings. With sheer grit, farmer know-how and a
slight touch of madness as well, Marchi and Tam laboriously pre-
pared the fields. They cleared them of a myriad of rocks (at times
modestly known as boulders) reflecting where the landscape was
once bulldozed by glaciers, or perhaps where glacial runoff trickled
and pooled long ago.

Through their never ending challenge of weeding and hand hoeing,
TERRA’s co-founders ventured upon hundreds and hundreds of trac-
tor-bucket loads of rock. The broken shale was cleared to better prepare,
cultivate and nurture the land for vine planting. The Latin word for earth is
“Terra” which has many meanings: “land” or “earth,” in the sense of “soil”
or “place” or “country.” Our vineyard, TERRA, embodies the true sense of
our co-founders’ migration of becoming “strongly tied to the earth” by
celebrating their passionate earthly quest to produce quality wine whose
origin is identified with its signature label. Their instinctive knowledge and
keen eye for good vine growing sites has allowed TERRA to distinguish
itself naturally. Strangely, they even sought extreme marginal areas within
the vineyard because they know that vines produce more intensely
flavoured grapes when up against a challenge. Farming is never perfect,
just eternally hopeful, and TERRA’s natural elements are firmly established
in our co-founders Friuliani roots.

TERRA’S VINEYARD

TERRA continues to be connected to sustainable farming practices.
Our wine products come from our estate vineyard.
A 100 acre farm consisting of 25 plus acres of planted vineyard
maximizing each zone’s potential and demonstrating the uniqueness
of each block’s territory.
We are a boutique producer; our wines are made in relatively small
quantities. Compared with other Ontario greats, we are small but this
allows us to concentrate on quality not quantity.
Quality wines begin in the “Terra” and our vineyard is a constant
source of pride and inspiration. We farm 10 varieties on over 25 acres.
Our vineyard team keeps us up to date on the latest viticulture
techniques and work hard to make sure our grapes thrive year after
year so we can deliver wines of quality and distinction.
It’s an exciting time for TERRA! No expense is spared in our custom
made vineyard and winery.
Grapes are harvested by hand, not machine. Wines of high caliber
are quickly gaining recognition and a loyal following.
We labouriously bury our vines in the “Terra” to keep buds safe from
winter freezes, and dig them out in the spring.
Local farming provides the mainstay of the area but this boutique
winery is determined to craft fine new quality wines.

VINEYARD INSIGHTS Without quality vines there simply cannot be quality wines. TERRA’s vineyard team follows the
latest viticulture techniques, is dedicated and works extremely hard in ensuring our grapes
SPRING DE HILLING thrive year after year overcoming challenging \weather conditions throughout the seasons.

Depending on weather (to avoid late frost risks) the soil covering the buried BLOOM
canes are manually pulled up and manoeuvred in place and tied to the trellis.
The buds become the new year’s canes and flowers. Each flower cluster
BUD BREAK will become a bunch of grapes.

Tiny buds on the vine start to swell and eventually shoots begin to grow from the HEDGING
buds. Buds are the small part of the vine that rest between the vine’s stem and
the leaf stem. In the County, bud break usually occurs in late April or early May. Hedging is like a green pruning. Once the canopy of the vines grows past
the top wire we give them a “hair cut”, and just like a hair cut allows
FRUIT SET healthier hair growth, hedg.

The flower begins to develop a seed and grape berry to protect the seed.
This stage occurs in late April and is very critical for wine production since it
determines the potential crop yield.

PRUNING

Pruning means to cut last year’s canes to leave a predetermined number of
fruiting buds on the vine. Prune too aggressively and we don’t get enough fruit.
Prune too little and we get too much fruit which may not ripen properly.
Balance is essential! Pruning usually takes place between March and April.

VINEYARD INSIGHTS HARVEST

LEAF PULLING One of the most crucial steps of the wine making process, it is determined primarily by
the ripeness of the grape. Our winemaker decides the exact timing. In The County
We perform our leaf pulling manually. We do this to allow air, light and disease harvest usually occurs between August and October.
control products to penetrate the canopy and reach the clusters. We de-leaf
the red varietals on the “morning side” of the rows to add more polyphenols to WINTER WINES BURIAL
the grapes, which helps the colour and structure of the wine.
Although difficult and manually very intensive, all of TERRA’s vinifera vines are
VERAISON covered and buried in late fall to protect them from the extreme temperature and
wind chill variances during the winter season.
40 to 50 days after the fruit has set, this stage signals the beginning of the
ripening process, with the colors of the grape changing from green to
red/black or yellow/ green depending on the grape varieties. Within 6 days the
berries begin to grow dramatically and their weight makes them hang vertically.
Look for this stage of growth in June.

DORMANCY

After harvest, the vine enters a period of dormancy in late November.
Reacting to the cold weather, the vine changes colour and it drops its leaves.
At the end of this phase, the vine is pruned and trained so that it can yield a
better crop the following season.

MATURITY

The completion of the ripening process of the grapes on the vine. What
constitutes the exact ripeness varies depending on the style of wine being
produced and what the winemaker considers optimal flavours. Depending on
variety, the grapes reach their maturity from August to October.
