REFIT & CONVERSION, DESIGN & CONSULTANCY
Ship conversions are an efficient and cost-effective means of getting more from an existing vessel, but they must be carried
out properly. KNUD E. HANSEN has extensive experience, having completed over 300 conversion projects, as well as
feasibility studies for many more. Amongst these are dimension/capacity changes, life extensions, re-purposing, change of
regulations, accommodation refurbishment and energy saving projects.
We are active in every stage of the conversion process, from initial feasibility studies to sending engineers to a yard to ensure
a smooth process at execution.
As a part of this, we are able to offer support during the yard tendering phase and follow the project throughout with onsite
supervision.
We understand that preparation is key - better to modify a project on paper than in steel later - and so work closely with vessel
owners throughout the process to define requirements.
KNUD E. HANSEN is a leading consultancy providing a comprehensive range of design, engineering and project
management services to shipyards and ship owners around the world.
Our innovative, customised solutions cover areas as varied as the building and conversion of all types of maritime
vessel and offshore structure, transport and logistical studies, land-sea interfaces and energy optimisation.
Throughout our history more than 700 vessels have been built to our designs, 450 hull lines developed and model
tested, 300 conversions carried out to our designs and specifications and more than 1,000 surveys, feasibility and
R&D studies, and other projects undertaken.

Before After
KNUD E. HANSEN redesigned a bulbous bow, as seen here, reducing fuel consumption for slow steaming.
Thanks to our long history of advisory work at the IMO and through conducting of industry research projects, we have
developed strong relationships with major Classification Societies and Flag States.
This positions us perfectly to deal with the intricacies of regulatory requirements, no matter how complex. We advocate Class
and Flag participation in the process as early as possible, in order to ensure Approval in Principle, for the fastest possible
project execution.

“ We began to work with KNUD E.HANSEN, when we needed an HVAC specialist for the Queen Elizabeth Class. They performed very well for us and we’ve gone
on to work with them on other projects as a result. In particular, KNUD E. HANSEN showed themselves to be incredibly flexible, willing to mobilise as many people
as we needed, wherever we needed them to be. I attribute this adaptability to the close-knit, trusting relationships between personnel. The culture at KNUD E.
HANSEN ensures total efficiency.”
