1.2 Vision of the faculty

Faculty of Medicine aspires to be an excellent institution in
producing high quality health professionals, research, and
community services.

1.3 Objectives of the program

Is to produce nurses who are capable of mastering and
able to apply practical knowledge and skills in the nursing
field and thus able to compete for the domestic and
foreign markets.

1.4 History of Nursing in UniSZA

For 25 years Diploma in Nursing Science program was offered at UniSZA, which was in the era of Kolej Agama Sultan
Zainal Abidin (KUSZA) in 1996. The nursing profession in Malaysia is now equivalent to developed countries in providing
holistic health services to the community. The School of Nursing Sciences is located at Gong Badak campus in Block C.

The UniSZA Diploma in Nursing Science program provides a curriculum that meets the
guidelines of the Malaysian Nursing Board (LJM) which emphasizes excellence in academic
achievement, critical thinking efficiency, the application of human skills, the mastery of information
technology as well as being competitive in the nursing profession.

Nursing science program at UniSZA have fulfilled the MQA’s requirements, comply with the guidelines of the Malaysian
Nursing Board and certified throughout Malaysia and internationally. In line with the advancement of the nursing field,
UniSZA will offer a Bachelor of Nursing Science (Honours) programme in the admission session 2021/2022.

Anatomy for Health Professional

Synopsis:
This course enables students to gain knowledge of structures of the human body system in
their respective professions. The lectures will provide a framework of basic concepts in the
structures of the human body in cardiovascular and blood, respiratory system, central nervous
system, endocrine system, musculoskeletal, genitourinary mechanism, and reproductive
system. Throughout the course, students will be exposed to interactive lectures, practical,
small group discussions, and laboratory reports to complete the course. The students will be
expected to understand and appreciate the anatomy of the human body as well as display
clinical procedures related to the system.

This course emphasizes the fundamental knowledge of biochemistry and haematology in
healthcare practices. It explains the principles and basic concepts of common haematology as

haematology data efficiently as related to health care as the students are expected to display
good digital skills. Throughout the course, students will be exposed to interactive lectures,

Microbiology, Parasitology & Immunology for Health Professional

Synopsis:
This course emphasizes on the classification of various biological agents of disease (bacteria,
viruses, fungi, parasites) and their cell structures and related function, microbial nutrition,
reproduction and growth, as well as microbial genetics. Brief mechanisms of microbial
pathogenesis will also be dealt with. Significant microbial infections and infection control will
also be covered in this course. This course will enable students to apply this knowledge to their
respective professions, through an integrated approach. The lecture will provide a framework
of basic concepts in microbiology, parasitology and immunology. Throughout the course,
students will be exposed to interactive lectures, small group discussions and assignments to
complete the course. The students will also be expected to demonstrate certain interpersonal
skills as stated in the learning outcomes.

Synopsis:
This course provides students with apply knowledge and caring attitude in giving care for
patient with renal failure and to understand the evolution of haemodialysis, peritoneal
dialysis and transplantation. Throughout the course, students will be exposed to interactive
lectures, blended learning, tutorial, practical and assignment to complete the course. Upon
completion, students should be able to demonstrate their understanding in managing the
patient with problems related renal system and perform an appropriate nursing care in
clinical practice.

Clinical Practice: Gerontology: Community Engagement

Synopsis:
The course consists of specialized nursing management among older adults and generally
associated with aging. Many such conditions lead to functional decline requiring therapeutic
interventions to restore or maintain an optimal level of function, or when appropriate,
palliative care. Such chronic or debilitating conditions are often complex and can occur in
older adults. The aim of this course is the student able to practice the nursing skill in
gerontology. This course also able to practice gerontology care in acute and sub-acute
hospitals, community clinics and home services. At the of this course, student will be to
hands-on experience in caring elderly patient, which is they able to develop the skills and
attitude in caring for the patients using the nursing process and to maximum achievement
in the performing skills.

Synopsis:
This clinical practice will help to monitor student’s activities during their clinical posting. The
student’s will be supervised and assessed by tutors, local preceptor, and specialists during
their clinical posting. This course will be able to carry out the skill of caring of nephrology
patient in hospital. At the end of this course, student able to perform the nursing skill related
to nephrology care.

3.0 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS / CONDITIONS

Admission requirements are STPM/ Matriculation/ Foundation/ Diploma or equivalent approved by the Sultan Zainal
Abidin University Senate. The minimum qualifications according to the General University Requirements and the
onditions of the Special Program Requirements are as follows:

University Requirement:
Pass the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) / equivalent qualification with honours in Bahasa Melayu/ Bahasa Malaysia or
honours in Bahasa Melayu/ Bahasa Malaysia July Paper.

Special Program Requirements:

A. STPM

1. Pass the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) with a minimum of CGPA 2.50.

2. Obtain a minimum of Grade C+ at of the following subjects at STPM Level:
• Biology (T)
• Additional Mathematic (T) / Mathematic Modern (M)
• ONE of any other subjects

AND

3. Obtain a minimum of Grade C of the following subjects at SPM Level:
• Biology /Science
• Mathematics
• English
• Pendidikan Islam/Pendidikan Moral OR ONE of any other subjects.

AND

4. A minimum score of Band 3 in MUET.

AND

5. Verified by a certified Medical Officer, the candidate must be physically fit, no limb
disability, speech, blind, deaf, dumb, and short-sighted.

AND

6. Pass interview.

4.0 EXAMINATION

Examinations of the course are held each semester. The method of assessment of a course depends on the learning
outcomes of the course.

The evaluation method consists of two methods
1. Continuous summative assessment throughout the period of lectures and clinical training represents 40% in

student assessment in theory and clinical practice.

2. Summative assessment at the end of the semester represents 60% of students’ assessment in theory and clinical
practice.

Assessment for theory courses
1. Continuous summative assessment is 40%.

The method of continuous assessment is based on the courses offered in line with the learning outcomes.
Commonly applied assessment methods are in the form of assignments, presentations, tests, case studies, role
plays, quizzes and others.

1. The end-of-semester summative assessment is 60%.
Final examinations are conducted at the end of each semester and the method of assessment depends on the
course offered and is in line with the learning outcomes. The evaluation methods are as follows:

• Part A: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)
• Part B: Multiple Essay Questions (MEQ)

Assessment for clinical practical courses
1. Continuous summative assessment is 40%.

The method of continuous assessment is based on the courses offered in line with the learning outcomes.
Commonly applied assessment methods are in the form of case studies, portfolios, running assessment,
clinical competence, academic supervisor assessment.

1. End-of-semester summative assessment is 60%.
The final Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is conducted at the end of each semester and the
assessment method depends on the course offered and is in line with the learning outcomes.

Each student is required to achieve 100% in a procedure that requires competency to qualify for the Malaysia Nursing
Board examination. Students who meet the above criteria are eligible to sit for Malaysian Board of Nurses Examination
based on the Admission Requirements in the General Section of the Register in the final year of study.

For the first semester and onwards:
• Students who obtain a CGPA of 2.00 and above are considered to have passed and are allowed to continue their

studies to the next semester.
• Students who obtain a CGPA of 1.70 - 1.99 are considered to pass conditionally and are placed under a period of

academic observation. The students may be permitted to proceed and must obtain a CGPA of 2.00 and above. If it
fails, they will be dismissed.
• Students with a CGPA of 1.70 - 1.99 in two consecutive normal semesters are considered failed and will be dismissed.

A student must meet all the following requirements to be awarded the diploma:
• Achieve an Average Grade Point Average of at least 2.00.
• Achieves the sum of all 80% theory credit hours set by the program.
• Full attendance at clinical placements to gain experience.
• Sick leave / certificate does not exceed 9 days in a year.
• Completing clinical placement satisfactorily by obtaining 85% of the procedures in the experience list and 100% of

the procedures from the skills list in nursing.
• Apart from the university committee, another committee that determines the achievement to meet national/

international performance standards is the Malaysian Nursing Board. Students will be eligible to obtain a
Certificate in Nursing Practice by sitting for the Malaysian Nursing Board examination.
