H
ow to keep your Christmas Lights safe this winter
No one wants Christmas ruined by dodgy old Christmas lights catching on fire. Experts reveal everything you need to know...
Christmas isn’t Christmas if the house and tree aren’t festooned with sparkling fairy lights, but Christmas tree lights can be dangerous, and a potential fire hazard.
Ashley Martin, public health project manager for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), says: “If you have old lights, seriously consider buying new ones which will meet much higher safety standards.
“Please remember - accidents need not happen, you can
protect yourself and your loved ones from injury by following RoSPA’s safety advice for a safe Christmas.”
RoSPA has the following advice for enjoying twinkly lights in safety:
What you should think about when buying your Christmas lights:
Look for safety marks e.g. BS Kitemark.
Buy from a reputable store.
Avoid buying second-hand unless you have
them professionally checked first.
New lights are transformed down to 24 volt for
added safety, or they may be double insulated. Always remember to:
NEVER insert or remove bulbs when switched on. Inspect cables and bulbs for damage.
Not use lights that are damaged, dispose of them safely.
What you should think about when using Christmas lights:
Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Use an RCD (residual current device) for added protection against shock.
Do not use the lights outdoors unless specifically made for such use.
Don’t run the cable under carpets or where it can be damaged.
Keep lights clear of decorations and other flammable materials.
Avoid cables becoming a tripping hazard. Use a stable support when hanging the lights. Don’t leave the lights on when the room is
empty. Remember to switch them off when you go to bed and when you leave the house. Don’t allow children to play with the lights.
How to store your Christmas lights:
Take care when dismantling and packing the lights not to damage them.
Keep them safely stored away out of reach of children.
Avoid damp or excessively hot conditions.

H
ow to protect your tender plants from winter frosts
Take measures now to protect your tender plants before the first frost gets them.
As the weather cools down, plants will need covering, bulbs will need lifting or mulching and extra winter protection given to tender specimens which will have to be brought indoors if they are to survive the coldest months.
So, what steps should you be taking?
Wrap them up
Use horticultural fleece, hessian or bubble wrap to wrap around permanent plants in pots. You need to stop the roots from freezing, which could ultimately kill the plant. If you have lots of pots, huddle them together near a house wall, where it will be slightly warmer. They will insulate
each other and you can use one large length of protective material to protect all the plants. Tie the cover round them securely so it doesn’t blow off in winter.
Next time you’re planting a tender permanent specimen in a frost-resistant container, line the inside wall of the pot with bubble wrap to save you having to do it in the autumn.
Plants in borders which can’t easily be moved, such as tree ferns, should be wrapped in horticultural fleece, from the base of the trunk upwards. The leaves of tree ferns and other tender plants such as cordylines should be tied upright, packed with straw and covered with horticultural fleece, plus a layer of mulch should be laid over the root area.
Make a frame
Small tender shrubs can be protected with makeshift frames made from chicken wire or a wigwam made from bamboo canes packed with straw and then covered in netting. In wet weather, you may need to temporarily cover them with clear polythene to stop them rotting in the wet.
If frost is forecast, keep a pair of old curtains to hand to cover borderline hardy plants overnight to prevent damage.
Move them indoors
Many tender plants, such as geraniums, begonias and half hardy fuchsias will need to be brought under cover before the first frosts. Put them in a frost-free greenhouse or garden shed to give them the best chance.
Lift plants
Dig up tubers and rhizomes of tender plants like cannas and dahlias once the foliage has been blackened by the first frost. Cut them down to within 5cm (2in) of the base and dig them up with a fork, taking care to avoid damaging the rhizomes, remove all
loose soil and dry them off, before storing them in boxes of dry sand or soil in a cool, frost-free place like a shed (for dahlias) or a greenhouse or conservatory (for cannas).
If you live in a mild area, you may get away with just a thick mulch such as straw or compost around the roots. If you can provide shelter for dahlias or cannas grown in containers, bring them under a porch or into an unheated greenhouse.

Have yourself a
Very Blingy Christmas in Zurich
Shunning tinsel and tack for a sophisticated Christmas market, Nick McAvaney heads to Swiss city Zurich.
Could there be anything more opulent than a Christmas tree covered in 7,000 glittering Swarovski crystal ornaments?
Anywhere else it might seem an ostentatious display, but it’s a rather fitting showpiece in Zurich’s Hauptbahnhof Christmas market, Christkindlimarkt, in Switzerland’s fashionable financial capital.
Divine boutiques on every corner sell cutting-edge fashion and designer homewares, while sharply dressed locals stroll through the markets, considering classic wooden toys, sumptuous chocolate or unique jewellery for Christmas gifts. There’s no tacky plastic rubbish here.
Starting my journey at the central station market, it reminds me of the traditional Christmas markets found across Germany, albeit with a Swiss twist.
Avenues of wooden huts surround the crystal Christmas tree, and spiced apple or orange punch is as popular as mulled wine (Gluhwein).
I’m instantly drawn to a stall selling chasmeischter, a hollowed out bread roll with molten cheese oozing from its centre.
It’s equal parts fromage heaven and lactose intolerance nightmare, and
there’s certainly no dignified way to eat it. Following it with punch and fruit preserved in delectable chocolate, I realise I need to walk it all off.
So I step outside to explore what is, in essence, a whole-town Christmas fest. There are 10 markets across Zurich and each almost flows into the next as stalls line the streets.
Across the other side of the city, Sechselautenplatz hosts the largest and is certainly a favourite with children.
They skip around me on their way to a skating path, a course running around a small house and along fir tree-lined alleys on the southern edge of the market. Adults clearly enjoy it too.
No Christmas kitsch here either, as the 100-odd stalls across the square have locally sourced designer and artisan goods on sale, alongside a surprisingly multicultural range of cuisine.
Aromas from curries, stir fries, burgers and pasta fill the air as I make a beeline for the fondue chalet, hoping to tuck into a raclette and beer. But I’m told that due to popular demand, tables need to be reserved days in advance.
I console myself with a hot chocolate as I leave to meander through Zurich’s old town. Narrow lanes invite exploration as they trickle down to the river off Niederdorfstrasse, where the oldest Christmas market in the city draws me in.
Chocolate, wine, boutique jewellery, clothes and souvenirs fill out this Christmas village, where I could easily spend an entire evening. However, there’s one more market I want to witness. One I’m told is firmly in the hearts of the locals.
Over the river at Werdmuhleplatz I make it just in time for a truly unique event, Zurich’s singing Christmas tree. A dozen choristers take to a vertical triangle-shaped podium to serenade their audience with festive hits. It’s an enchanting end to my evening.
Where to sleep
When it comes to location, it’s hard to beat the Marktgasse Hotel. Rising above Niederdorf market, the chic
accommodation is a new addition to Zurich’s old town. Rooms offer fine views of the streets below, while the two restaurants and bar maintain the understated elegance of the hotel’s interior design. Doubles from Chf234 (£178) with breakfast.
Visit marktgassehotel.ch/en
Where to eat
Head straight to the cheese chalet at Zurcher Wienachtsdorf to get your fondue fix. It’s popular amongst locals, so book
a table in advance. Raclette starts at Chf9.50 (£7), while a glass of beer is Chf6 (£4.50). Visit wienachtsdorf.ch
Once Zurich’s first movie theatre, Razzia is now a fine-dining restaurant with an interior that has been refurbished back to its 1920s heyday. Main courses range from Chf20- 50 (£15-38).
Visit razzia-zuerich.ch
Where to drink
Cabaret Voltaire on Niederdorfstrasse
is a popular cocktail spot. Part museum devoted to Dadaism, which was born there 100 years ago, and part cabaret, it gets a bit raucous at night. Drinks start at Chf15 (£11.50).
Visit cabaretvoltaire.ch
Hidden away on the back streets of the Old Town is the Old Crow, serving some of the best cocktails in the city. Rare and forgotten mixtures are the order of the night, from the more than 1,500 spirits on offer. Drinks start at Chf15 (£11.50).
Visit oldcrow.ch
How to get there
SWISS (swiss.com or call 0345 601
0956) offers up to 125 weekly flights from London City, Heathrow, Gatwick (seasonal), Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Dublin to Zurich. Fares start from £78 one- way.

Christmas Lifestyle 2017 11
The best 2017/18 European ski holidays you’ll want to snap up right now
Whether you are looking for a short break, family getaway or gourmet treat on the slopes, Sarah Marshall offers her tips on where to go.
It’s not long before the ski season kicks into action - and if you really want to grab the best offers available, it might be an idea to book early.
Exciting new hotels and facilities are opening across the slopes, and many operators are dropping prices for those eager to lock down dates now.
We’ve picked out a few of the most interesting deals.
Best for a luxury family stay
La Plagne, France
Open for the ski season from December 16, this popular resort has a host of new activities, restaurants and hotels.
Last winter, a family ski run opened as the longest in France - and now there are plans for an extension with bridges, tunnels and jumps. The resort also has an exciting new piece of kit for beginner skiers. Originally designed for those
with disabilities, the Go to Ski device reproduces the eight movements made by a skier’s feet, making it easier to remain steady while you learn the ropes.
Families planning a holiday might want to consider the newly renovated four-star Araucaria Hotel & Spa, opening in time for Christmas. Children’s facilities include a Treasure Island-style pool, arcade games and a play area with an igloo.
A seven-night stay costs from E1,390 (£1,229) room only, based on a family room of two adults and two children sharing.
Best for a short break
St Anton, Austria
Although close to the fashionable party strip, Hotel Montjola is far enough removed to allow for peace and quiet. It’s been recently renovated, with the addition of flat screen TVs and hot tubs, and some family rooms feature a separate living room and kitchenette.
VIP Ski offers four-day stays, ideal for those who want a quick taste of the slopes without having to spend too much time or money. Book by October 31 to save up to £100pp. A four-night stay at Hotel Montjola, arriving January 3, costs from £649pp (was £836 - saving £187) based on two people sharing. Includes flights from the UK to Friedrichshafen, coach transfers, accommodation, four-day half-board catering and ski and snowboard hosting. More information visit vip-chalets.com or call 0208 875 1957.
Best for a Christmas break
Dolomites, Italy
If you’re planning to spend the festive period abroad in a suitably snowy location, Inghams is offering a seven- night stay in northern Italy’s famous UNESCO-listed Dolomites. The scenery
is fairy-tale-like, with frosted swathes of forest and jagged, white-streaked peaks.
Hotel Antares in Selva is ideally located for access to the Sella Ronda, a ski route that loops around the massif of the
Sella mountain range. Four main points are linked by lifts, with a total distance
of 40km, ideally suited to medium/ advanced skiers. But there are also plenty of other pistes perfect for all abilities.
Departing December 23, a half- board holiday for four costs £1,359pp
(saving £220pp), including flights from Manchester or London to Innsbruck and transfers. Visit inghams.co.uk/ski-holidays or call 01483 791 114.
Best for a gourmet adventure
Alta Badia, Italy
With more Michelin stars than any other slope in the Alps, this ski resort in the South Tyrol is ideally suited to fans of fine food and wine.
This year, 13 Italian Michelin-starred chefs (including Giorgio Locatelli), have been paired with a different mountain hut and tasked with creating a recipe inspired by their childhoods. The dishes will be available from December 10 and served throughout the season for E15 (£13), including a matched glass of wine.
Following a successful first season, Sommelier on the Slopes will also
be back with seven dates between December and March. The sessions, costing E28 (£25)pp, include guided skiing accompanied by a professional sommelier, stopping off at three different mountain refuges to taste South Tyrolean wines. Buy tickets from altabadia.org.
Travel with Powder Byrne (powderbyrne. com) over the weekend of the Gourmet Ski Safari from December 8-11 (3 nights) from £1,099pp. Includes a double room at the Ciasa Salares Hotel on a half- board basis, flights and transfers.

Craving a New Winter Coat? these are the 5 trends you should be shopping this season
From ravishing red to fluffy fabrics, these are the coats to covet now.
While there are many depressing things about winter (the cold,
the darkness, the self-diagnosed Seasonal Affective Disorder) there’s plenty to get excited about too, namely Christmas, comfort food, and the fashion equivalent of the Pumpkin Spice Latte: Coats.
And it just so happens that this season’s outerwear trends are without exception the cosiest and most SAD-busting we’ve seen in years. We’re talking bright colours, loads of fluff and snuggly fabrics that will keep you toasty-warm all winter long.
But you’ll have to be quick if you want to get your arms into one
of the trendiest coats, as they’re liable to sell out long before the mercury drops and you actually have to put one on.
So, we’ve rounded up the top five autumn/winter coat trends to shop now and wear later.
1. Red coats
Red is the undisputed colour of AW17, and it lends itself amazingly to outerwear, because what’s more mood-enhancing than a lipstick red wool coat?
This season, the silhouette borrows from the boys - whether single or double-breasted, it should be oversized, in a rounded tulip shape (rather than belted), and in a weighty wool fabric. Wear yours open and with the collar up for extra attitude.
Dorothy Perkins Red Double Breasted Coat, £65; Red Slash Neck Jumper, £24; Black Coated Skinny Jeans, £18.20 (currently reduced from £26); Black Velvet Heels, £25 (in store in October)
Hobbs Tilda Coat, £299
2. Heritage fabric coats
After Balenciaga, Vetements, Stella McCartney and many other designers showed heritage checks on their AW17 catwalks, the high street followed suit (literally) and Pinterest saw a 75% rise in pins for check coats in September.
With blazers and trenches this cool, it’s not hard to see why. Traditional tartans and tweeds have been given a mannish spin this season - layer with other checks and fuzzy knits for cosy- cool vibes.
East Wool Check Coat, £299; Merino Striped Dress, £139 (in store September 29; tights and boots, stylists own)
River Island RI Studio Check Piercing Trim Coat, £160; White Slingback Heels, £50
3. Puffer jackets
Once the preserve of skiers and Alpine hikers, the puffer jacket has had a high-fashion makeover in recent years, and we couldn’t
be more happy, because these duvet-esque coats are insanely warm AND they look super stylish.
But be warned, this trend is not for shrinking violets - your sleeping bag jacket should be as big, bright and shiny as possible.
PrettyLittleThing Yellow Ring Pull Longline Puffer Jacket, £55
Ivy Park Pewter Bonded Puffer Jacket, £120, Topshop
4. Shearling coats
Shearling is another trend that takes a traditional textile and gives it a digital-age update.
A faux shearling biker or flight jacket strikes the right balance - look for edgy leather and metal detailing, or plump for an
usual colour choice, like pink or purple.
White Stuff Nene Jacket, £120; Lasso Tie Front Jumper £55, Smart City Trousers £49.95 (available October 9)
New Look Cream Borg Buckle Trim Flight Jacket, £59.99
5. Fuzzy coats
Your unlikely style icon for AW17? That’ll be
the Cookie Monster, because fluffy coats
in technicolour hues are where it’s at.
A short faux fur jacket
is ideal for throwing on
(or ‘shoulder robing’) for a
night out, and outerwear this extravagant needs little by way of accessories. For double the trend points? It’s got to be a red fuzzy coat.
Daredevils Run Jacket, £278.94, Revolve
Cath Kidston Faux Fur Coat, £160
