Introduction to Community
What is a community? A community is a group of people
who take care of each other and their surroundings. A
community can also be a group of people who share a
general area or space.
Seguin is a community because most of us help out
each other, but we are also a community because we care
about our city and the people in it. When a building burned
down in my grandparent’s neighborhood, people gave the
owners gifts. It was a huge crowd. This city has its ups and
downs, but in the end, we are like one big family.
AJB is a community because we look out for each other
and our school. We are all different, but we help each other
out. If someone gets hurt, her friends are by her side. We
care about each other, and that is one of the things that
makes us a community.
In order to learn about our community, we had to do
two things: conduct a survey and research. I hope you will
learn more about your community by looking at our
information.
Stewardship
What might our world look like if no one cared our environment? Litter would be
everywhere. Greenhouse gases from our transportation would pollute our atmosphere. If
we never really took time to clean the earth, our home would die. Our earth would be a
wasteland. Small groups try to save our planet, but they, alone, are not successful.
Without a more significant effort, our water and air will be polluted beyond recovery.
Our survey showed that AJB students are trying to make a positive impact on
both our social and physical environments.

Volunteering
At AJB, we have many ways of taking care of our environment. As
many as 57% of AJB 6th grade students improve our social environment by
having a positive attitude and showing respect to others. 17% of students
try to conserve resources. For instance, we don’t leave the water running
while brushing our teeth. 12% of us grow some of our own food by
gardening or farming. 7% recycle paper or aluminum, and 6% actively
volunteer their time to worthy causes in our community.
Movement
Over the last 100-200 years, transportation and movement of goods and
services has changed drastically with different inventions. Inventions ranged from
riding horses to driving cars, walking door-to-door, to riding bicycles, to ordering
goods and services from catalogs to ordering from online websites, such as
Amazon, and talking to each other on the phone.
Creative minds like Karl Benz and the Wright brothers are great examples
of transportation. They created the main inventions of our lives today; Karl Benz
created the first car and the Wright Brothers created the first airplane.
Transportation is one of the major inventions that have improved our daily lives
and will continue to evolve for a long time.

The majority of our 6th graders didn’t have far to travel when they
moved into this area. Fifty nine percent of the AJB sixth graders were born
right here in Seguin, while 24% were from somewhere else in Texas. 11%
were born outside of Texas but within the United States. 7% of students
were born in Mexico or Central or South America. 2% of our students were
born somewhere else in the world.
Languages
Seguin has many different languages. Most
people speak English and some people speak Spanish.
Some people are bilingual. At AJB, students speak
different languages. Most students speak only
English. Some speak both English and Spanish, and
very few students speak only Spanish.
I have never learned any other language besides
English. Language helps people communicate with
others. If people know more than one language, they
can speak to and translate for others. If a tourist
who speaks a different language asks for directions
or something, you know what they are saying and can
help them with directions. Knowing and speaking
different languages can help us communicate with
almost everyone in our community.

Seventy percent of the sixth graders at AJB speak only English.
Twenty six percent of the sixth graders are bilingual and speak both English
and Spanish. Three percent of our sixth graders speak English and another
language, while two percent of students speak only Spanish and are just
learning English for the first time.
Traditions
A tradition is an event that most people use to celebrate life, recreation, or
religion. These can vary from family-spread to worldwide events. These bond our
cultures further together. Personally, my favorite traditions are large sporting events like
the Super Bowl or the NBA Finals. These are extremely large events that are celebrated
by many people. During a major sporting event, most families watch the games on T.V.,
and chicken wings are popular among fans’ spectrum of taste.
5% of the 6th graders at AJB enjoy watching large sporting events. I am in a
major minority.
Overall, traditions are important to our lifestyle because of the fact that they
express the way we think and how our cultures mesh in the world. No matter what
people’s favorite traditions are, these celebrations show how everyone can connect in
something, yet others may find insignificant.

About the Authors
Live your life to the fullest and never give up.
This motto relates to my life because I never limit myself. If
people think I can't do something, I dedicate myself to
proving them wrong. I push myself to my limits. I believe no
one should put limits on themselves and, personally, I will
never limit myself.
Macey Berryhill
Don’t stop trying.
This motto really fits my lifestyle. If I fail, I will just get back
up and try again.
Logan Busskohl
Don’t fear mistakes, there are none.
I learned about this motto in 4th grade and I thought, this is
actually true. Nobody should fear mistakes because there are
none. In life, you should not fear trying new things. You learn
from every mistake you make, so it’s okay to make some, as
long as you learn and grow from them.
Julian Bermea
Just keep walking and do not look back.
This motto applies to my life because, from what I have
experienced, being a girl means lots of drama! So much
drama just makes you want to walk away from all of it,
so I do, and I never go back to it. Always walk away
from drama and do not get involved.
Savanah Cardenas
Do not let anyone say you worked too hard,
because, in fact, they worked too little.
This motto applies to my life because I have never taken the
easy way around something. I have always strived to my full
potential because I don’t see any limit. I see a project that could
be done in a half hour as never ending, and I will always work
towards reaching for the best I can give. I have heard many
people in my life say that I worked too hard on something that I
could’ve done in 20 minutes. I don’t see it that way, because I
strive to stand out of the crowd and be the best. I don’t like to be
a follower; instead, I am a leader.
