Client Stories

Made possible through your generosity

Meet Kimberly

Kimberly is eight years old. Her sister is 12. They often come to the Runs with their mother who takes
enough fresh and sustainable lunches to last the week. This winter on one of the Runs, Kimberly was given
a warm wool hat, but this was not an ordinary hat: it had a “princess” crown on it that she proudly wore,
making everyone on the Run smile.

Meet Louie

We’ve known Louie for some time now. We see him on our New York Run. Despite his many serious
health issues, he has a ready smile. Louie suffers from epilepsy and has frequent seizures. His brother and
sister were his caretakers, but they are no longer able to care for him. He sleeps in a doorway and hardly
moves. Our volunteers bring him brown bag meals and soup every week. One of our core volunteers, Joan,
crocheted a quilt for him out of plastic bags that provide a soft and moisture resistant pad for him. We
worry about Louie.

Meet Clarissa

Clarissa has a hard time interacting with others. As a child, Clarissa lived with her mother, but had a
turbulent childhood. She suffers from paralyzing anxiety and other mental health illness that keep her
from holding a job. Ultimately, she became homeless. While homeless she lost her son and daughter
to state custody. She was homeless for at least two years before finding Bridges Project Connect. Case
managers at Project Connect got her back on her feet. They secured an ID for Clarissa, a mental health
assessment and ongoing treatment (she is currently in a day program) and shelter stays that led to
permanent housing with supportive services and furniture. Now, case managers are working with
Clarissa to find her employment and help her regain custody of her children. She says, “Bridges was the
only good thing that happened to me while I was homeless.”
