COLLAB

One of the biggest factors that contribute to the success of a business is whether employees can perform
together as a team. Collaboration in the workplace takes place when 2 or more individuals work together to
achieve a common objective by sharing their ideas, knowledge, and skills.
Let’s look at our own organization - consider Choithrams Retail. The success of retail can be defined in terms
of growing sales and increasing profits. If we define growing sales and increasing profits to be the objectives of
Choithrams Retail, would it be possible for Retail to achieve these objectives without all other departments
performing their role to meet this objective? If our supermarkets must grow – Retail operations, Procurement,
Supply Chain, Marketing, HR, IT and Finance should work collaboratively with this common objective in mind.
As a process, this means that we are required to:

 Define goals for the organization
Translate these goals into department objectives
Define each manager’s goals and key performance indicators (KPI's) linked to department objectives
Create a performance incentive scheme that is linked to the achievement of these targets

As these targets are linked to the goals of the organization, the achievement of these targets ensures the
achievement of the organizational goals.
There are several benefits of team collaboration:
• Improved flexibility in the organization – when collaboration improves, so does our ability to handle sudden
change. Teamwork makes it easier for us to adapt when the customer preferences change or disruptive
technologies enter the scene. This is relevant for our business where the buyer behavior in both retail and
wholesale is moving towards digital. How well our teams in retail, commerce, e-commerce, procurement and
supply chain teams collaborate can determine the success of our future.
• Engaged employees – Employee engagement is a crucial factor in the company’s success. One of the best
ways for us to engage as employees is to improve teamwork, which builds the spirit of camaraderie in our
teams. As we collaborate widely, we become more engaged and as engaged employees, we are eager to take
on new projects because we see it not as a burden but as a challenge that will take us to the next level.
• Healthier employees – when we create a culture of collaboration in the workplace, we treat employees as
people and ensure that we as managers focus on positive interaction. This reduces the levels of stress in an
organization and improves health all around.
• More productive meetings – efficient collaboration leads to more effective meetings. With collaborative

IN THE WORKPLACE

collaborative teamwork, we need fewer meetings as there are more proactive information sharing,
more engagement and more support for each other’s efforts.
• Faster to market – with a collaborative culture, we gain the ability to bring products or services to
the market faster. Teamwork and communication speed up the entire process and makes it easier to
implement innovative ideas.
• Higher Loyalty and Retention Rates – Happier, more engaged employees would not leave the
company since they are more engaged and hence find their work more fulfilling. If we are all
generous team players, why should people leave? Collaboration creates a more open culture within
the workplace and that keeps employees loyal and committed to the organization.
• Innovative Ideas – Collaboration brings in a diversity of thought and perspective which might
otherwise be lost. This generates dynamic, innovative ideas which are essential for an organization’s
growth.
• Better alignment with stakeholders – it’s not just collaboration between employees. When we
focus on external collaboration with customers, partners, and suppliers, there is better alignment
between the customer’s needs and what we offer.
• Enhanced individual productivity – when we use tools or processes that make teamwork and
team communication more efficient, individual goals are met faster and with better results.
How do we ensure collaboration? Some interesting points for encouraging collaboration in the
workplace -
• Communicate – communicate by sharing ideas with your coworkers, managers and anyone who
will listen
• Visualize – use visuals to communicate your ideas and clarify your ideas at the most simplistic level
• Acknowledge – acknowledge the work that your team is doing. Give credit when a team member
has contributed a good idea, hard work or even constructive criticism. Collaborative relationships
work best when team members feel valued.
As we prepare ourselves for a competitive environment and a changing landscape, we must work to
become truly collaborative in our work which in turn will contribute to our continuing success.

Teamwork in organizations is best characterized by members working relentlessly to achieve a common
goal. The Choithrams Group is an ideal personification of what teamwork is. In recent months, the team
was able to conquer amazing feats because of the employee's dedication and the managements
unwavering guidance. Here are some of the accomplishment of Choithrams Team at work.

WrapStars Wrapstar is a one of a kind opportunity for talented individuals to
showcase their skills with wrapping. This year’s Wrapstar was
conducted last 26th February 2018 – 28th February 2018. We had
a tough decision to take, as we were allowed only three
participants to represent us at the Wrapstar competition. From a
number of talented employees, we held an elimination round to
identify the three staff to represent the company.

Jennalyn (Market place), Cherry Ann & (Um sequeim) and
Bernard (Safa Park) were declared as the representative who
eventually represented TCS at the Wrapstar Event. It was indeed
a proud moment to see our employees perform at par with
Wrapstar veterans like Harvey Nichols or Dubai Duty free.

Although we didn’t bring home the prize, we brought home an
amazing story and discovered three bright “stars” of our own.
They were even warmly welcomed and personally congratulated
the Choithrams’ CEO, Mr. Rajiv Warrier.

Global Goals We at the Choithrams Group have always endeavored to do our
World Cup part in the society by giving back. This time we sought to do it by
Tournament  joining a football match, comprising of our first all women
football team. The team was part of the Global World Cup
Football Tournament, which was held at Sustainable City in
Dubai. This Charity event took place on January 19th 2018, where
our Women’s team supported the Zero Hunger Campaign.

The competition was fierce but the spectacular women of
Choithrams showed us that they were forced to be reckoned
with both off & on the field. Our team of 7 incredible women in
a display of true grit led us successfully into the quarterfinals.
Here are the names of the amazing women of the team; Rehana
Raj    - Retail Operations, Jovielyn Castor – Retail, Palm Azure
Store
Rodelyn Eway – Retail, Al Ghazal Store, Thelsa Montano – Retail,
DEC Marina, Marivic Calaunan – IT, Marketing Tech & Analytics,
Karen Diocales – HR, Shared Services, Geethashree Jayakanth-

The center stage is a public speaking forum regularly organized
and created by the L&D team to develop the public speaking
skills of the Human Resource Team. HR Professionals are required
to be adept in their communication skills as such they use Center
Stage as a platform to hone their abilities.

Members of the team are encouraged to develop and deliver
speeches to an audience comprising of their peers who offer
constructive criticism. Furthermore, the platform also fosters
confidence building and discipline.

The sessions happen once a month. The team has been
successful in running the sessions for more half a year. It has
helped the team improve significantly manifested by a change in
the quality of interactions amongst the team and the other
employees.

In order to establish a collaborative environment within Retail EEmmppllooyyeeee ooff
Operations Department, the team introduced the "Employee of tthhee MMoonntthh
the Month" to recognize the significant contributions of retail
staff in the supermarket. The Rewards & Recognition campaign DDuubbaaiiCCaarreess
was launched last May 2017 across all the Choithrams Super CChhaarriittyyEEvveenntt
Market.

Rehana Raj, Retail Operations Manager, believes that this
initiative will push better collaboration among retail staff. "
Since we started this R&R we have noticed a big change in our
retail staff. They are more productive and more involve in retail
processes", she added.

The Rewards and Recognition initiative of the Retail Operations
Department, have significantly changed the perspectives of
retail staff about teamwork and collaboration. They are more
involve and are more imaginative in how they deal with their
workloads. A true sign that collaboration and growth works
hand in hand.

With its commitment to help the needy and ameliorate the lives of
less fortunate, Choithrams was able to raise AED365,200 through its
Dubai Cares- Ramadan Goodness Campaign during the holy month
of Ramadan.

Supermarket staff took part in the campaign seeking donations from
customers across all Chotihrams supermarkets in Dubai. The staff
who made the greatest contribution in the entire duration of the
campaign were awarded cash prizes and certificates.

An awarding ceremony was staged to culminate the charity
campaign. Representatives from Dubai Cares together with
Choithrams Management headed by the CEO, MR. Rajiv Warrier
graced the said event.  The awarding was held last August 2017 at
Choithrams Al Ghazal.

Choithrams Group have been supporting fundraising drives for
decades and every year we have seen a notable improvement in the
participation of our staff in such activities.

Pursuit of Excellence:

TCS Awards & Recognition

Many organizations aspire to be the best. Whether it be in the sales of products and services, systems and
processes or employee engagement, companies think of ways and means to better their organization in the hope
of setting standards in the market or simply achieving their vision.

The pursuit of excellence in any organization steers collaboration among its members. Employees feel empowered
when they see that the company embodies excellence. They see more value in what they and other individuals
contribute to the organization. More so, they feel validated when the company receives recognition from external
entities.

Because of Choithrams drive to maintain excellence, the collaboration of different departments allowed us to
receive noteworthy awards in 2017. The butchers of Choithrams Al Falah V1 were adjudged as the Best Meat
Butchery in Abu Dhabi last December 13, 2017. The award was presented by the Abu Dhabi Government through
ADFCA.

Choithrams - HORECA's dynamic team also nabbed the Aster- Best Vendor of the Year for 2017. Mukesh Totlani,
Unit Supervisor, said that it was a dream come true for the division, all thanks to the hard work and dedication of
his entire team.

One of the greatest awards received by Choithrams Group this year is the recognition given to the company for
having the best awareness campaign. Dubai Municipality declared Choithrams Supermarket as the Overall Winner
of Best Awareness Hypermarket/Supermarket  Award 2017. QHSE team received the award on behalf of the
company.
