My Life As A
Tundra Swan
Veronica Brown
My Baby Days
I was born on a breed over the lake in Alaska and
my mom taught me how to pick my own food and
also taught me how to position my beak in the
water the right way to get it. My family and I eat
all different types of aquatic plants, roots, and
tubers and sometimes if we’re lucky we eat really
good shellfish on special occasions, which are my
favorite.
The journey begins
Every September, me and my family usually start
our migration journey, we all gather together
along the Brackish shorelines of the rivers delta
before moving down south. We stop for the fall
at the wetlands in boreal forests and continue
our journey again.
Wintertime/ My new home!!
In the winter we usually gather on estuaries,
lakes, bays, ponds, and rivers and continue our
migration and finally after migrating for 3725
miles me and my family finally end up in either
the Atlantic or Pacific coasts of the united states
and settle there for the winter until the next year.
Mating season
during mating season which happens once a year it is a
pretty big year for my kind of species because my mom
and all of the rest of my aunts and sisters lay about up to
4 eggs and incubate them for 32 days while males guard
the nest and when that happens it is a huge thing for me
because I get a bigger family and we can migrate
together and have a good time!
Challenges we had to face long the way
The only issue with that is we also gotta know how to
protect ourselves against prey and other animals
that look at us as a meal, like foxes and jaegers and
we don’t like that, f we feel threatened we will attack
by biting down on our prey and/or we flap our
wings which hits whomever were attacking really
hardly.
Human Impacts on us
Our biggest threat that we have to face in our journey
while were migrating to where we need to go for the
winter time is the amount of air pollution we inhale while
we are migrating and when we finally arrive we have to
protect ourselves and kind of stay on the lookout for
hunters because they can kill one of us individually at a
time. I hate this because I loss a lot of family members in
the years of 1962-1984
