“We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery because whilst
others might free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind.“
— Marcus Garvey
Welcome. Thank you for joining us for Valuing Black Lives: The First Annual Global Emotional Emancipation
SummitSM . This Summit is designed to launch a ground-breaking international conversation that will lead
to concerted action to overturn--once and for all--the lies of White superiority and Black inferiority: the root
causes of the devaluing of Black lives and the systematic underdevelopment of Black communities the
world over.
This is a working Summit. Our charge is to be action-oriented and solutions-focused.
Our aims are:
1) to leave this Summit with a framework for the Summit Communiqué, which will include an outline of
agreed-upon next steps, and which will be finalized and sent, on or before September 30, 2015, to Summit
participants; members of the Congressional Black Caucus; the United Nations; the African Union; the Pan
African Congress; national Black organizations in the United States, the Caribbean, Central and South
America, Canada, and Europe; all embassies of the African Diaspora; and other key associations; and
2) to continue working together to implement, evaluate, and refine the 2015 Valuing Black Lives Summit
agreed-upon action steps, and to plan for the 2016 Valuing Black Lives Summit through Working Groups--
using The Way Back Home, our online portal designed to facilitate ongoing international collaboration.
Our Summit Objectives are to: spark the creation
of energized working

Everyone has an important role to play to help us move
forward. In order to make the most of our time together,
panelists and participants are being invited to serve in one or
more of three equally essential roles:
Summit Framers
to set the thematic framework for the
small group deliberations to follow;
Summit Circle Facilitators/Rapporteurs
to shepherd the process of small group
deliberations to capture themes and
critical points, and to ensure that concrete
ideas and strategies emerge from each
deliberation; and
Summit Discussants
usually referred to as the attendees or
audience in a typical conference, but for
this Summit, members of the audience are
asked to work in Deliberative Circles and
play the critical role of reaching consensus
on key issues, and serving as co-creators
of strategies to help us free ourselves and
our children from the lies.

If you want to go far, go together.“
— African Proverb
We come together in the spirit of Ubuntu, as Ubuntu is the essence of being
expressed in the proverb – human. It reflects the idea that my
“Umuntu Ngumuntu Ngabantu – a person humanity is tied to and inextricably

Ubuntu, we recognize our shared
humanity, our commonalities, and we
show humility, compassion and
tolerance. A person with Ubuntu is
welcoming, hospitable, warm,
generous, and willing to share.
This is the standard to which we
aspire--to be Ubuntu people—people
who are open and available to others,
willing to be vulnerable, and affirming
of each other, knowing that we belong

Next steps
This Summit conversation is the first of many to come. Our goal is to continue the
conversation and planning for action through Working Groups to be convened on the
The Way Back Home, the online portal designed to facilitate ongoing international
collaboration.
1. If you wish to make a commitment to be part of one of the Working Groups to be
established, please fill out the Summit Commitment Sheet and return it to one of the Summit
volunteers.
2. Please also take a moment to sign our petition to Pope Francis and share it with your
family and friends.
The Pope is coming to the U.S. next week. When he visited Latin America in July, he
apologized to Native peoples for the sins of the Church. The Community Healing Network‘s
petition appeals to the Pope to issue a similar apology to the African peoples of the world.
Please visit CHN‘s website and click on the link for the petition.
3. Please mark your calendars now to celebrate Community Healing Days, observed annually
on the third weekend of October (October 16, 17, and 18, 2015). It is designed to put “time for
healing“ on the Black community‘s agenda.
We invite you to respond to the late Dr. Maya Angelou‘s Call to Wear Sky Blue during
Community Healing Days to show our collective determination to “move beyond the pain of
the blues to the sky blue of unlimited possibilities.“ Our theme for this year‘s celebration is
“Let‘s Listen to Our Elders.“ We invite everyone to turn off the screens that take up so much
of our energies and spend time with our elders giving them the respect they are due and
listening to their stories about family and community.
