SPS+ Architects has worked with Blue Ridge Unified School District for almost 20 years and during their recent bonding projects, we designed a renovation of the existing administration, media center, and special education classrooms. The project also includes converting two vacant classrooms into locker rooms. All classrooms within the building envelope received new paint and carpet. BLUE RIDGE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL RENOVATION
Client Blue Ridge Unified School District Size 60,579 SF Cost $1,960,990
San Carlos Unified School District wanted to rescue the historic tufa stone San Carlos Day School building, originally constructed in the 1890s, after years of neglect had led to rotten and failing wood floors and compromised trusses. SPS+ gutted, restored, and remodeled the original building and incorporated an addition to re-purpose the facility into a new district office. Throughout design and construction SPS+ stayed as true as possible to the look and feel of the original building, taking care to restore or recreate period details such as the traditional tin ceiling, hardwood floors, custom five-panel wood doors, stained wood window and door casings, baseboards, and chair rails. The district office also features Santa Fe-style textured walls inspired by the original plaster walls, “schoolhouse” globe lights similar to the original lights from the 1890s, and a high-end shingle roof to replicate the original slate roof. SAN CARLOS DISTRICT OFFICE REMODEL
Client San Carlos Unified School District Size 12,114 SF Cost $4,797,438
This replacement elementary and middle school addresses site concerns, expands STEAM opportunities and celebrates the diverse community. The new campus updates the outdated original facilities. SPS+ worked with the District directly to phase site improvements, demolition, and construction. The SPS+ team initiated frequent meetings and phones calls to develop a design for the elementary school based on Arizona’s ‘5C’ economy, which can most notably be seen through the stunning copper facade. A new media center and technologically equipped classroom helps to facilitate inquiry and collaborative learning while outside spaces promote social learning and play. PALOMA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL REPLACEMENT SCHOOL
Client Paloma Elementary School District Size 11,296 SF Cost $6,270,200
This project included demolition of the existing modular construciton classroom wing for a new Middle School building and renovation to upgrade interior and exterior ADA access throughout the campus. New finishes and wall graphics were designed and placed in the lobby, student gym, music classroom, hallways, student commons areas, and library to modernize the existing learning environment. Outdoor and indoor storm drainage were a crucial part of this new design due to the varying elevations. SPS+ became resourceful and rerouted drainage away from the buildings by going underneath them and designed a positive slope. MOUNT ELDEN MIDDLE SCHOOL RENOVATION AND ADDITION

PIÑON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT SPS+ completed several teacher housing projects for Piñon Unified School District, including modular homes with six bedrooms and another standard with two bedrooms. In addition, one single family, one duplex and triplex. TEACHER HOUSING MULTIPLE SCHOOL DISTRICTS KAYENTA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT The project consisted of five single-family residential housing units for teachers. The unit configurations are four bedroom, two baths, units with 1,713 SF each and one, three-bedroom, two bath, unit 1,484 SF. This project also consisted of complete site development to include building pad preparation, grading & drainage, extension of underground utilities, concrete driveways & sidewalks and structural concrete building slabs. WINDOW ROCK UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT The sixty unit housing project design incorporated two and three bedroom teacherages, duplexes and townhouses. The Window Rock Unified School District acted as the “developer” by constructing the housing pads, streets and utilities under one contract and then contracting separately for the actual housing units. The homes were of quality construction and included standing seam medal roofs, stucco walls and masonry wainscots. The District ultimately focused on the construction of 40 units, with the majority being two bedroom units. WHITERIVER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT This project consisted of three phases. Phase I included two to three bedroom duplexes, three three-bedroom mobile homes and one four-bedroom mobile home. Phase II consisted of two to three bedroom duplexes. Phase III consisted of two to three bedroom town homes. SAN CARLOS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT SPS+ was contracted to replace the existing eight units on the same site with a higher unit density including bringing all parking internal to the site in lieu of the existing head in street parking. The new housing consists of thirteen new, 965 SF, two bedroom units. The units were paired to create duplex units. Nineteen internal site parking spaces are provided with close adjacency to the units. The site orientation of the duplex units creates a site interior corridor to the entry of each unit.
