WELCOME
The past year at BAFTX, my first twelve months as Executive Director,
have been very exciting. In summer 2016, we drafted a strategic plan
with the objectives of growth and assisting even more students in
achieving their academic goals. A successful capital campaign followed
and a lively, bigger than ever Wine Women and Song event in January
2017. Spring 2017 saw BAFTX and its benefactors present awards to 75
young people. Summer followed with gala preparation as we look
forward to the British American Business Council of Houston's Starry
Knight Gala, a biannual flagship fundraiser. We have also launched a
newsletter, increased our social media presence, appeared on local TV
and in the press and welcomed 3 new members to our Board.
Central to BAFTX of course are its students and their incredible
ambition, many of whom simply would not be in education were it not
for your sponsorship. One of our 2017 scholars came to the USA alone
aged 18, a winner in the US government's green card lottery. He has
funded his studies in Petroleum Engineering through scholarships
including two from BAFTX. All of our scholars have come overcome
incredible hardship and often hard luck with grit, determination, and
intelligence to undertake studies at the highest level, improving their
future and that of their families to become global leaders of tomorrow.
BAFTX was founded as a 501(c)(3) in 2006 by Tim Horner, then Vice
President and subsequently President of the British American Business
Council of Houston, Susan Howard and Julie Harris and awarded its first
scholarships to gifted students from low income families in Texas the
following year. Since then, BAFTX has gone from strength to strength.
Susan Howard led the non profit as President for 9 years, shaping the
organization we know today with passion and dedication.
Thanks to our generous benefactors and volunteers, we are able to
continue to assist gifted students from Texas and the UK to access
education and fulfill their potential. We are looking forward to another
exciting twelve months!
Kay Thomson, Executive Director
MISSION
The Foundation was established by the British American Business
Council (BABC) as a beacon going forward into the future, to light an
awareness of the opportunities available culturally and to affirm a
commitment to the academically gifted, yet financially
disadvantaged youth of today, encouraging them to become our
global leaders of tomorrow.
The scholarships will be awarded at various increments and
programs to finance aspiring middle school, high school,
undergraduate and postgraduate students. We will also be focusing
on funding young adults who may require re-education, post
traumatic recovery or provide aid to continue education during long
term illness.
BAFTX will provide opportunities to excel here in Texas, or to attain
global education, with exchanges between the UK and USA
educational institutions of excellence. For many, travel broadens
their minds and horizons and solidifies the existence of a world that
is waiting for them beyond the realms of the school bus perimeter.
The primary focus will be in the field of Science and Technology and
International Business. With the generous support of people like
you and the BABC, BAFTX will strive to finance these bright,
hard-working students that are hindered in reaching their potential
through lack of funding, supporting them in their endeavors and
attaining their goals without the added worry of financial
constraints.
