Director’s Note

Guys on Ice For Marvin and Lloyd, the ice shanty represents a
pseudo-holy place—more than a clubhouse, but
March 14–March 23, 2014 less than a church. When times get tough, they
LCT’s 50th season – 338th production escape to the ice; it’s quiet, isolated, and safe.
There they are free to explore their fears, hopes,
and dreams. The seclusion and silence lends clarity
to their thoughts. Ice fishing is part entertainment,
part meditation, and a way of life for them.

It isn’t really my thing, but it could be. I might
give it a try. But I’d better be wearing a very
warm snowmobile suit.

Enjoy the show!

ITaking time to chill out Greg Parmeter, Director
’m not much of a fisherman, and I’m not
particularly fond of ice. Though my dad and
my father-in-law are avid fisherman, I’ve never
understood the appeal of sitting out on a frozen
block for hours at a time hoping my bobber
quivers, signaling that something I won’t eat
might be nibbling on the near-invisible line I’ve
dipped into the unforgiving polar waters that
threaten to swallow me whole at any moment. I
do enjoy beer and jerky, however, so I have that
much in common with the guys of Guys on Ice.

I do understand the sense of peace and focus that
ice fishing can provide. We all need something
to relieve the pressures of the job, bills, and
hundreds of other daily annoyances that keep
a person up at night. My dad and father-in-law
fish; I can sit in front of a campfire for hours,
doing nothing but watching the flames, or spend
an entire day at a baseball game, just taking in
the sights and sounds. These pastimes lend the
time to think, reflect, or turn off completely.
