19th century. Hugo’s novel, though focused on a small and
unsuccessful rebellion in the midst of a century of major
revolutions, is the defining work about the era of French
revolution because it revealed the plight of those who
suffered most during the years of unrest: les misérables, the
miserable ones, the wretched, the victims. Les Misérables is
indeed the people’s song. In the redemption of Jean Valjean,
the people of France saw their own redemption reflected
back at them. Soon after, these same people would end the
century of upheaval and establish a government that at last
realized the ideals of the French revolutionary spirit: liberty,
equality, and fraternity.

The Historical

The huge task of costuming a show has fallen to many since our
beginnings in 1963—too numerous to list here. Before LCT hired a
professional costumer, volunteer designers, tailors, and seamstresses
created all the costumes, stitching in their homes where fittings were
done, too. Volunteers also opened their homes to costume storage in
the early years.
