It is said that the true mettle of a person is revealed when he or she is subjected to unfavorable circumstances. Each and every
Cadet and Staff of this school were pulled out of their comfort zone and were forced to weather unfavorable circumstances posed by
the unprecedented global Pandemic. Each and every Cadet and Staff have proved their worth by overcoming various obstacles that
were thrown in their paths. This display of grit epitomises the motto of our school – 'Can Do It', which means that we will achieve our
aim despite all adversities.
The School conducted various activities, both scholastic and co-scholastic to ensure that we continue all round training of
Cadets despite all odds. A large portion of the training had to be conducted in the online mode. This demonstrated the ability of both
Cadets and Trainers to adapt to the changing times. It also showcased the utilisation of technology in education and gave a glimpse
of what we can expect in future.
The endeavor of the school will be to provide all-round training so that the Cadets can not only join Armed Forces but also turn
out to be worthy citizens who are keen to contribute to nation building and are also cognizant of their duties and responsibilities to
the nation. We will continue our battle against the ongoing pandemic and will jointly emerge as winners.
I am happy to see the worthy contributions to this edition of 'The Amaravian' by cadets, staff and alumni. I would also like to
compliment the editorial team for bringing out a magazine of commendable standards.
Best Wishes Jain Hind !!

EDITORIAL
“Learn as if you were to live forever” said Mahatma Gandhi. Learning is a lifelong process.
It starts in the womb and ends in the tomb. Sainik School Amaravathinagar leaves no stone
unturned when it comes to training the young boys and girls, who aspire to serve the
motherland adorning the military uniform. Indeed! A noble ambition. The training activities
are planned impeccably to impart quality education . In spite of the pandemic hurdles and
short-comings the school has been imparting the scheduled training both qualitatively and
quantitatively. Patron

A DAY OF GLORY
Education is the passport to the future. “Tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today” said Malcom X, famous
Afro American human rights activist. In one way Malcom X's words have been the talisman of Sainik School
Amaravathinagar. SSA has been granting the passport to the future to the young boys since 1962. Today(16 July 20) the
school celebrates its 59th Founder's Day and has produced outstanding citizens in all walks of life.
“CAN DO IT” is the motto of the school and literally the alumni have been living up to it. . The school is spread over a
sprawling 200 acres and has several amazing facilities in air , water and land like swimming , kayaking , parasailing , horse
riding etc.. . to ensure an all round development of the cadets. The school conducts the inter house competitions to bring out
the competitive nature amongst the cadets.
Let me share my experience. It was in May 2014, at the age of 11, I joined Sainik School Amaravathinagar as a young boy
who had exactly no idea where life was carrying him , kept getting swayed by the blowing air, no idea of drill , sports, games,
uniform, turn out, mess etiquettes, no maturity and depending on someone for everything.
Today I find myself completely changed into a cadet who is much developed and conscious of the goal to be achieved and
capable of facing the odds of life. The military biased training imparted here has made me a mature, physically strong and
mentally alert human who can look after himself and others in the best possible manner. Much of the training is carried out by
outstanding teachers, who are there with us every time and everywhere . They groom us for seven long years. The strenuous
training activities are blessings in disguise. Rough seas make good sailors.

If the school's achievements are to be listed I need a complete day and today's assembly won't be enough to perform
that duty. But to mention a few , the school has been continuously ranked No.1 among the boys' residential schools in Tamil
Nadu, by the Education World magazine, which is a human resource development index. The school hockey team has
achieved tremendous success in the IPSC, U-17 hockey tournament and played Nehru Cup. Our school band has won the
second position at the IPSC band competition for three consecutive years and participates in the Republic Day parade held
at Marina Beach in Chennai every year.
The school has also produced several top ranking military officers in the rank of Lt Gen and equivalent. Lt Gen Noble
Thamburaj, Lt Gen Ahluwalia, Lt Gen Haris, Lt Gen Anbu, Air vice Marshal Madheshwaran, Air Vice Marshal Vardhaman, Vice
Admiral Muralidharan and Vice admiral Ashok Kumar are the highly decorated officers of the Amaravian fraternity. The school
has produced many gallantry award winners. The most distinguished among them is the Ashok Chakra awardee
Maj Sri Ram Kumar and the parade ground on the campus has been named after him. The school has taught us to take the bull
by its horn no matter how hard the situation or the challenge is and also finish the task at the drop of a hat and importantly
doing it by hitting the nail on its head.
It has transformed the couch potatos into dark horses and clever decision makers. Most importantly our seniors are there
to guide us in every walk of life. “ Coming together is beginning , Keeping together is a progress and working together is a
success”, said Henry Ford, American industrialist and founder of the Ford Motor Company. We have learnt this, in the inter
house competitions and other outside competitions representing our school. Character is the real foundation of all
worthwhile success and that is moulded by our prestigious institution under the hawk eyed officers and all time available
teachers. I thank my alma mater for moulding me into a gentleman by offering an ocean of opportunities which would
certainly transform me into a worthy citizen.

THE AMARAVIAN SPIRIT
I still remember, the tense atmosphere in the Senior Hostel during mid October in 2019. It was Inter House Football
Finals, and we Cherans had to win it. The responsibility of brining the trophy for the Cherans was on our Seniors' shoulders.
They knew if they didn't bring the trophy home they would have tough time in the house. As expected they had won it. We
celebrated the victory in a way no one would have imagined, tossing our players as high as we could in the air and made our
fellow teams feel jealous The other houses envied us and had hundred reasons to feel uneasy. The talk of our winning the
football trophy went on for a month in all hostels of our school. That is house spirit.
Then came the IPSC hockey tournament, now it was a matter of school's pride and we would not let other schools
belittle us. As a result, all houses jointly planned and executed the required strategies and we won the tournament with flying
colours. We were beaming with pride. It was a joint celebration of all houses. We Amaravians always rise to the occasion and
“CAN DO IT” is our motto. Every batch has a success story but all lead to one same objective: Glorifying SSA. Our bond gets
cemented further after we pass out of the grand portals of SSA. We believe, “THERE IS ALWAYS AN AMARAVIAN

MY LIFE AT SSA
We as novices came to SSA empty handed, with tears and fears. When we spent a few nights stranded here , we realised
that we had to let all our fears go. It was a new beginning in our lives, wherein we learnt a lot. From using fork and knife at the
dining table to tying a shoe lace. Those days our life wasn't that easy, as the punishments would make us feel dizzy. Those
push ups, pull ups and front rolls made us stronger souls as the days rolled on.
We were afraid of our seniors for sometime. But once we developed a rapport with them, we were proud of them. In the
school, we learned to study on our own, and spend minimal time speaking to our parents over phone. We played a lot and
enjoyed sports as never before. Though we played hours together we always sought more. The classroom was a place of fun,
and I say it here without a pun.
We used to chit chat, play and sleep, as we had no worries upon which we had to weep. Inter House Competitions always
carried the limelight, as all the houses wanted to prove their might, and never once failed to give a tough fight. Be it sports or
CCA, we never took things light. We were fascinated and amazed by our seniors, who occupy high positions in the Armed
Forces. Life at Sainik School is indeed something special, a priceless and worthy treasure. Those who are on the rolls never
realise it. Those who have passed out of the school never fail to preserve the good old memories of it.

RIGHT SCHOOL MATTERS
When I think of life at school, it is full of learning and living together. The first day when I joined the school I felt like a rat
in the trap. It looked so attractive and good from outside. In the beginning I didn't like anything there. But now the school is
everything for me. It has shaped me into a complete human being ready to face the challenges of life. It is because my school
concentrates on all-round development of its students, and this is what is required to become an officer in the Defence Forces.
Besides it inculcates the right kind of attitude in the students which is absolutely necessary to become a good officer. Since I
have fixed my aim to join Defence Forces, it is the institution which suits my aim and aspiration. Not only I am trained to appear
for UPSC examination but also I am trained in basic skills of life.
From day one, I have been learning to be in group. I have grown in team spirit and public speaking. Today I can express
myself anywhere. While playing games I have learnt the spirit of sportsmanship for sure. Many have a wrong notion that if you
are in Sainik School, you can't get good marks. It's not at all true. It's all depends on the individual, how he uses the available
time to prepare for academic growth. Cadets here tend to enjoy rather than working hard, I feel that is the reason some don't
score good marks. As a whole I feel that Sainik school Amaravathinagar is a home away from home and truly a gateway to
NDA.

A UNIQUE TRAINING GROUND
My dream was to become a Defence Officer. I could see light at the end of the tunnel when I cleared My All India Sainik
School Entrance Examination. A boundless joy embraced me when I entered the school as a class VI cadet. Now I would like to
pen why I chose SSA ? The purpose of this school is to send young boys to Defence. Hence you can find in the school, all types
of activities for an all-round personality development . With CBSE syllabus, the education is excellent and there are many co-
curricular activities which develop the academic learning. Equal emphasis is laid on sports and games. Games improve
confidence and team spirit. I had a chance to become a member of my House Volley Ball team . Though we could not win yet the
entire experience taught me many lessons of life.
Besides, academic and sports, the extra-curricular activities play a major role in bringing out the latent talent. The on-
stage activities like elocution, dance and drama help us develop our public speaking skills and aesthetics. As a result we get rid
of our stage fear in no time. The cross country races tune our sinews and fortify our bones. NCC is compulsory for all cadets. By
the time you pass out you would have attended at least four annual camps. You would get NCC 'B' Certificate which is possible
only in Sainik Schools. Adventure activities like horse riding, swimming, kayaking and rock-climbing ignite the dare-devilry
amongst us. Our love and passion for music is taken care of by our scintillating music and band club. To add to our motivation
we are taken on an educational tour to NDA when we are in class XI. This exposure inspires every one of us and hastens our
journey towards our goal. SSA, A unique school indeed !.

CAN DO IT
It is essential to know what the Services Selection Board is looking for in a candidate in order to select him. In a broad
sense there are 15 Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) which the assessors in the SSB try to discover in a candidate by exposing
them to various tasks / tests. These tasks are classified into three categories i.e., Group Tasks, Psychological Tests and Personal
Interview. When I joined Sainik School Amaravathinagar as a young lad, I was a weak, submissive, unenthusiastic introvert who
had no knowledge about the Defence Forces and the Defence way of life. I had very little socializing skills and just cared for
myself in the initial days. I never knew that the next seven years would bring in drastic changes in me that would shape my
future in the best way.
Right from my class VI, I found gradual changes in me in a positive way. Mingling with boys from various parts of the
country and with diverse culture made me improve my socializing skills and transformed me into an extrovert. The
punishments and the tough routine of the school made me wither off my weak nature and made me tougher both mentally
and physically. The strenuous physical workouts in the morning and the tiresome sporting sessions in the evening combined
with endless sessions of training made me improve my stamina and ability to face any difficulty. The various Inter House
Competitions starting from the novices games made me learn to be in a group and work for the success of the group /team. It
helped me imbibe team spirit and made me adaptable to any situation.
The motivation given by my seniors through Josh talk sessions and also by way of seeing them perform exceptionally well
on the stage as well as on the sports field left in me a sense of determination to be an achiever in all fields and helped me give
my best in each opportunity that I could grab. Participating in various CCA competitions helped me gain experience which in
turn boosted up my confidence. My participation in competitions such as prepared talk, extempore speech, debate and
declamation helped me evolve as a public speaker with a good fluency and power of expression. Each time I participated, I
could discover a few short comings in me which I improved upon and overcame the next time.

NCC served as a hub for developing qualities like punctuality, discipline, integrity and patriotism. I was privileged
enough to be one among those cadets who could join NCC at a very young age. I learned a lot as a young NCC cadet. NCC
gave us a wider spectrum about the Armed Forces and also the general awareness which each citizen of our country needs to
possess.
Once I became the Class Captain in class VIII, I experienced the life of a leader for the first time. It was a new experience
to me wherein I learned the art of convincing and leading a group. I understood that a leader must set an example for the
men he leads and must guide them and motivate them to overcome tough times. Subsequently I became the Junior House
Captain in class XI. Being a house captain and leading the whole house was a matter of pride for me. I learned how to treat
my subordinates and teach them all that I learned through my experience and guide them to the path of success.

THE ROAD TO SUCCESS
July 17, 2017 was the most precious day of my life and that is the day I joined Sainik School Amaravathinagar which has
given me whatever I have now. My school has been inculcating various OLQS in each and every cadet which convert them
from a cadet to a gentleman cadet. Various competitions have been conducted which play a major role in developing the
public speaking skills which helped me a lot in SSB. And not just mental stamina which I gained by participating in these
Inter House Competitions, but also the physical stamina which I developed by participating in various sports competitions
like South zone which provided a platform to interact with cadets of other Sainik Schools that improved my outlook.
Apart from these things, my school provided me opportunity to be with different types of students from different parts of
the country which made me a socially adaptable person and understand and respect their views. The quality which I respect
the most and always feel happy to develop is the sense of responsibility which I developed by taking initiatives at the right
time by controlling and guiding the Juniors in the right path. And not just this, all training which we receive teach us : Never
Give Up.
Seniors play a significant role in developing and inculcating the OLQS in us to a greater extent. They make us sincere
and disciplined. They are the ones who teach us everything from polishing shoes to mastering the military drill which make
us independent. The schedule of my school is the one which I love the most which always keep me busy by eliminating all the
negative thoughts and makes me face the difficulties of life. This busy schedule has helped me learn stress management
through good planning.

SPEAK WITH EASE
Oratory is the masculine gender of music. One must know what he is talking about to his listeners. A good speech must
have the accuracy of logic, the wisdom of the philosophers, the language of poetry, the memory of lawyers, the voice of
statesmen and the gesture of the best actors. The power of eloquence has been proved by the statesmen generals and master
philosophers since time immemorial. In a very early time, it blossomed splendidly and reached the apex through public
discourses.
Modern day orations have become an instrument to sway the masses especially for politicians. Most of the world political
leaders survive today for they have the ability to speak easily and confidently in a way that makes people listen to them and
believe them. In the eighteenth century the skills of rhetoric gained an upward trend due to creation of parliaments and the
issues of liberty, equality and fraternity burned brightly in debates.
Debates not only influence masses but also lead to wise decisions. Arguments make us broad minded and enrich our
command over the language. People must be encouraged to participate in debates. Good debates with powerful expression
make a great nation. The progress of a nation can be considered to be directly proportional to the discussions and debates.
Sainik School Amaravathinagar has given me a wonderful opportunity to involve myself in debates and speeches that tuned
me to have good command over English language. I cherish every moment I spent at the podium both on my school campus
as well as elsewhere. Collecting points, preparing the script, getting it edited/ improved by my teachers/seniors and round the
clock rehearsals make one a seasoned speaker. My alma mater breeds the “GIFT OF THE GAB”. Long Live SSA!

WHY MIDLIFE?
Middle age is that time of life when we hear two voices :
“Why not?” and “Why bother?” – Sydney J Harris
The dictionary defines “midlife crisis” as a period of emotional turmoil in middle age (around 40 to 60 yrs.) characterized
especially by a strong desire to change. Many individuals reach a high point in life when they feel that time might have caught
them up with and they might no longer be in their prime. This can lead to changes in their attitude towards life. Being one of
the most popular concepts, describing middle adulthood need not be experienced by everyone. A midlife crisis can be
triggered by significant life events that often remind us of our age and tells us that we are 'past our best'. The jolt of major event
can force us to reflect on what we have achieved in our lives and more importantly – what we haven't. This can fill us with
regrets and prompt us to change our lives dramatically to try to recapture our youth or gain a sense of fulfilment.
Midlife crisis can be changed into midlife transformation
• By evaluating the present and making changes
• By setting new goals for future
• By brainstorming current life
• Be a little patient with self
• By letting go of concerns about others' judgements. This will help
oneself think out of box and be more authentic.
Midlife transformation can result in positive changes as the personality becomes more steady and self-accepting. The
challenge has to come out of middle age with life satisfaction restored. At the end of day, there are no limits for making
transitions to have a satisfied and enriched life. It's completely “OKAY” to feel stuck or lost at a point because it is simply
another normal transition to another stage of life. It's never too late to start anything. As the saying goes, “when grace joins
wrinkles, it is adorable”.

WHOM DO I QUOTE?
I am penning my heartfelt message to my student community and to the elite teaching community, who sculpt young
lives and mould them into precious glittering diamonds. Every successful teacher, imparts multifarious skills to her/his
beloved students in the form of “knowledge and wisdom” by preparing them ready to face any situation in any walk of life. I
happened to be a student of Kendriya Vidyalaya and the English that I speak and write today is what my beloved teachers
gifted me. Besides, my late father, an AOC Colonel of Simon Commission, instilled in me a lot of tips on “Good English'. I love
creating my own quotations and enjoy sharing them in my classes frequently.
To emphasize the need for toiling during the school days I quote“Seven years of Hard Work, lifelong Enjoyment: Seven
years of Enjoyment lifelong Hard work” and to highlight the need for good actions I say “Your deeds are the seeds of your
future”. Cadets are fascinated when I say, “No fear, no tear, life runs in top gear”. I add the following to the list.
“First learn to listen, and then the listening will make you face many lessons in life”
“Positive thoughts can crack negative thunderbolts”
“Art is the ladder of civilization”
“Every teacher has a unique brand, and every student has a unique feature”
“A teacher seeks happiness in the happiness of his students”
“A business man earns wealth and name, where as a teacher earns lifelong happiness and fame”
When I entered Sainik School Amaravthinagar in 1987, I came empty handed but today when I retire; I proudly carry tons
and tons of wisdom and everlasting non-saturated happiness. I was fortunate enough to design Sainik Schools Society flag
and its insignia. I am a proud Amaravian too. Hats off to SSA!

MY MENTOR
I took up teaching in 2014 and after serving a couple of schools elsewhere I landed on Sainik School Amaravathinagar in
2019. Today I proudly admit that SSA is my mentor. I wonder at the work culture, tradition and the training pattern and how all
these features lead to the all-round personality development of young cadets. It is not just a school , it is a great source of
inspiration for me to enrich and enhance my professional skills. I am happy that I am constantly growing under the aegis of my
administrators and my colleagues.
What have I learnt at SSA? I have not seen such atmosphere in the schools elsewhere. It provides me a well organised
campus life where I get pollution free environment and sound social life. The constant guidance and counselling offered by
the officers and the senior teachers make me feel at home. One thing that thrilled me the most was my first encounter with
the Map Pointing Competition which is the rarest of the rare type of competition to be conducted in schools. As a teacher of
Geography it amused me a lot and it is one of the great ways of exposing students to the world of maps.
SSA provides opportunity for the subject teachers to conduct UPSC coaching classes which are really challenging. I am
quite fine with the textbooks that I have to teach to the students of secondary classes but teaching UPSC syllabus in
Geography amounts to running extra miles. The way the cadets respond to my teaching gives me the utmost satisfaction and I
love to teach them more and more. A separate lab for Geography in a school? Amazing! My school boasts one. The academic
labs play a vital role in preparing the cadets for NDA. As a teacher I have to play the role of a mentor to hundreds of cadets
every year but I look up to my school as my mentor. Hail SSA!

VISION 2021
I used to occupy the first bench at school. When I was in class VIII my science teacher Mrs Krishnaveni Venkatachalam sent me to the
last bench as a punishment for a certain prank I played in the class. I could not read the blackboard. What a blessed day! She discovered that I
was suffering from myopia. I am ever grateful to her. A teacher, guide and well-wisher indeed !.
The message reached my father and I was taken to a renowned ophthalmologist in Salem and I got to wear high power goggles. As I
grew the power of my outer eyes too grew obediently. After forty my vision started diminishing due to cataract formation. I was managing it
for about fifteen years. The condition worsened by the dawn of 2020 and I badly needed surgical correction. But Corona held me indoors.
Knowing my handicap, one of my retired colleagues referred me to Dr Sathyan who is an experienced ophthalmic surgeon. Interestingly he is
an Amaravian (1994 batch) too. I am awestruck at the medical advancement. Hats off to the laser and the digital technology! The cataract
removal and the intraocular lens implementation procedure have gone beyond one's imagination. It is done today with total ease and
precision. I underwent the same in the first and the second weeks of December 2020. Each surgery took roughly 15-20 minutes and the total
hospitalisation period was hardly two hours. I got my clear vision without goggles in no time. No anaesthesia, no stitching, no bandage and
no dark glasses. Only I had to wear a plain transparent fibre glass for a couple of weeks for protection. The very day I flew to Chennai.
Post surgery care is required for two months with regular application of eye drops. My "mission for vision" got accomplished successfully.
Hospitality is an art. A dedicated host can never be reciprocated. When I happened to stay alone after surgery, Mr LP ensured my daily meals
(home made) for about two weeks. A friend in need! Getting hygienic and tasty food is a blessing. I will cherish his palatable menu for ever.
Now I Google without goggle-s. I move around comfortably without those cumbersome convex lenses. What else can be a worthy gift of a
new year to a myopic who depended on a pair of spectacles for about 42 years! Eventually," Man, earth and seas and heavens open out to my
sight" (Apologies to H F Gould). Thus VISION 2021!
Now I deftly proclaim, "Beauty lies in the non-myopic beholder's eyes".

AN ABODE OF PERFECT LEARNING
A perfect school should have a good infrastructure with good space to make it a good place for the children to study. A good
infrastructure makes it interesting and gets the children motivated to go to school and this in turn improves the interest of students in
learning. Thus, it's important for schools to have good infrastructure to improve the performance of the students. A good infrastructure is
important, but at the same time, it should also have emphasis on a student friendly ambience and value based learning.
Having said about the importance of infrastructure in teaching and learning, I cannot stop myself from talking about Sainik School
Amaravathinagar, which has a conducive set up with natural ambience spread over 200 acres. It will not be an exaggeration to write that over
the past ten years the infrastructure and the facilities of the school have been improving tremendously. In 2010 the new academic block and
a spacious sports complex were added to this list. The school building is spacious, well planned with good architectural features. The new
academic block is well ventilated with facilities like fans, lights, benches, chairs, blackboard, etc. There are also facilities such as laboratories,
art and crafts workshops, multimedia centres, school office, theatre and many more.
Last year the school constructed a new library to felicitate learning as it plays an important role in the learning process of the school
which is an integral part of the infrastructure. The new library is located close to the academic block with a soothing ambience for the
students to concentrate better. The contribution of our old boys cannot be forgotten in the infrastructural development of the school. They
have felt the need and contributed immensely by constructing a spacious Balamurugan Natarajan Hall – a tea-break hut and a big shelter in
front of the cadets' mess. Renovations of swimming pool, cinema theatre, gallery in parade ground are a few notable additions that we cannot
forget. Thus Sainik School Amaravathinagar is a perfect campus for teaching and learning.

READ FOR PLEASURE
No matter how many friends and modern technology are available around us, yet books are our best friends and they play an important
role in our lives. These days when all the information is just a click away, reading books is losing its charm. Good books enrich our minds with
good thoughts and knowledge like good friends. Children should start reading at very young age because it is essential for brain development.
Thus said, once literacy is achieved, the reading should not stop. Reading is one of those wonderful activities that anyone can take part,
regardless of age, economic status or interest. That's why, knowing how reading interfaces and affects your day to day living is so essential.
Like any muscle, the brain needs to be exercised to remain healthy and strong. Reading is a yogic exercise for the brain. In fact, frequent
brain training decreases mental decline among the elderly by 32%. Reading stimulates the brain functioning. Regular readers can experience
memory improvement and gain stronger analytical skills. To understand a book, readers are forced to remember complex characters, setting
and plot structures, as well as the development of the central idea. Reading can reduce stress; spiritual texts have demonstrated lowering
blood pressure, while self help books can assist those with mood disorders. Overall, reading is a calming mechanism and spreads a feeling of
relaxation. By reading a vast collection of books or about topics outside your typical field of interest, you can gain a huge amount of
knowledge about various subjects which is not directly learnt in your curriculum.
At school level, reading books helps expand your vocabulary because as you read, you scrutinize the meaning of unknown words through
context clues. It also improves your writing skills because more you read, the more your writing skills will improve. Reading is essentially an act
of observing flexibility, writing styles and well written sentence structures.

Books mirror the imagination, emotion and knowledge of the author. Through the book, the author spreads the light of knowledge. The
authors who write books leave the world, but the books live forever. A book immortalizes the name and the work of its author.
Most importantly reading is a fun. Rather than gluing your eyes to the smart phone or to the television screen, read the lines on the page
of a new book. Avoid constantly damaging your brain cells with Facebook, Instagram or Whatsapp. Instead repair some of those cells by
reading good books.
