Dear Pamela,

On 28th December, I arrived in Manchester. I know I told you I wanted to
go to London but I found that Manchester is better for me to study. On the 25th
December, My family organised a good-bye party with all family members and
friends. We had a great time. Pamela, I wish you were there!

Now that I am here in the UK for almost a month, I still find the weather
too cold. I finally understand why people say that you can actually feel sad
when it is really cold. On my first few days, I had a flu and bad fever. I had to
visit the doctor. Since I have not registered with the National Health Service
(NHS), it cost me RM250 for just one doctor visit! If this was in Malaysia, I might
only have to pay about RM50.

Back home we always get about 12 hours of sunlight right? During winter,
we only have about 8 hours of daylight here. By 5 o’clock in the evening, the
sky is all dark and black. The weather is so cold that I have to eat more food
and wear more clothes to feel warmer. However, I am worried that I will gain
weight because of how much food I eat. So I have joined a gym and go there
every two days to stay fit. Also, I have made some new friends who are kind to
give me tips on staying warm.

However, I really look forward to having my first snow experience. The first
snow is expected to fall any time now. I also look forward to going ice-skating
with some of my friends here during our one-week break.

I hope you are doing well there Pam. I will write to you again when I have
time.

Your friend,
Sheila

Ways to Prevent Dengue Fever

Dengue fever is still a serious problem in Malaysia. The number of victims
increases from year to year and it has taken away many Malaysian lives. We
must take important steps to prevent this disease.

There are many ways to prevent dengue fever. First, we must clean our
houses and surrounding areas at least once a week. Any water that is not moving
should be removed. We all need to check our flowerpots and pails around our
house. Turn them up side down so that they do not collect rainwater and become
the perfect place for dengue mosquitoes. For houses with fountain, having some
guppy fishes get rid of the mosquito eggs in the water.

The other way to prevent dengue fever is to use mosquito repellent. This is
important especially if we have outdoor activities early in the morning and late
evening. Dengue mosquitoes are active during sunrise and sunsets. Some people
like to go jungle trekking or hiking during these times. That makes them the easy
target for dengue mosquitoes. That is why we need to use mosquitoe repellent
spray before going out.

Another helpful way to prevent dengue fever is to sleep under mosquito
nets if necessary. Remember to get rid of the mosquitoes under the mosquito
nets before we sleep. We can also install mosquito nets in all our windows to
prevent the mosquitoes from entering our homes.

With all the steps done properly, there is sill a possibility that we may suffer
from dengue fever. If we have high fever, red spots on the hands, legs and body,
headache, and redness of the eyes, we must seek medical advice immediately.

Subject: Holiday!

I just came back from a holiday with my family last Friday. I thought my best
holiday was in Melaka but this was a lot more fun. My whole family took a flight to
George Town, Penang from Kuala Lumpur. We stayed at a hotel on Armenian Street,
next to Acheh road, from 13 to 16 August.

This trip was all about food. On our first day, we went to look for my brother’s
favourite food – Char Kuey Teow and Penang Laksa. Although I enjoyed the curry
noodle, I still think Penang Laksa was my top pick. It was delicious.

One food I did not enjoy much was the fried oyster with egg. I did not like the
taste of the oyster but my mother absolutely loved it. However, if there was one thing
that my whole family like, that would be cendol. When we got there, there was a long
line. We thought it would take us 30 minutes but it only took us 10 minutes to get our
order.

We also did not miss the opportunity to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We rented some bicycles and together we cycled around the town to look for every
street art. There were many cars on the street so we had to be extremely careful.

Jamil, you need to come visit 3D art museum because you love art so much and I
was surprised by how cool it was. I know you do not like key chains so I bought you an
art book. Give it to you when I see you!

National Service Programme and I

Taking part in the National Service Programme was one of my best decisions. I joined
the National Service Programme last month in Tawau for 3 months and I’ve learned so
much from it.

First of all, it helped me develop good habits such as waking up and sleeping
early. At home, I could always sleep late and wake up anytime I want. But in the camp,
we had to follow the rules set by the officers and shut the lights by 10 p.m. At first, I did
not like it but now I think it is a good habit for me. Now, I always try to sleep before 12
a.m. to make sure I get up early in the morning.

By joining the National Service Programme, we made new friends who come
from different races and states in Malaysia. I got to know some new friends from
Selangor and they shared their lives in west Malaysia with us. Hearing the stories, I
could see that there is so much difference among us even though we live in the same
country. Because of that, I learned to respect people with different cultures.

The programme taught me about responsibility. Under the National Service
Programme, every individual is the same. If we did something wrong, we would be
given a fair punishment. If we did something good, we would be given good words or
even prize. Therefore, we have to think carefully before taking any actions. I find it
useful to use in my daily life.

In additions, there are many exciting activities in the National Service
Programme such as jungle trekking and cooking in the jungle with very few utensils and
food provided. We learn to work in teams and help each other solve problems. We
learn to set up camp, group patrol at night and cleaning a dorm together. On top of
everything, I think what I like most is all the love I felt from everyone I met in the camp.

Questions 35 - 40

You are going to read an article about a school event.
Six sentences have been removed form the article. Choose from the sentences (A – H) to fit

For each question, mark the correct answer (A – H) on your answer sheet.

Last Monday, our school SMK Kemaman had organised a Sing and
Dance event. 35| In the morning, everyone gathered in our new school hall
and our headmaster, Mr. Vivek gave an exciting speech.

The first activity of the day was the singing contest. All individuals were
really talented. Izzah from my class was one of the singers. 36| To
support her, all of us voted for her.

However, Nelson from another class was Izzah’s biggest competition.
After counting all the votes, she lost to him by just five votes. 37|

Since this was a Sing and Dance event, we could not miss out the
dancing competition. This competition had a twist this year. 38| It was fun to
watch some of the dancers dancing hip-hop in traditional costumes.

However, I must say that some of the dancing teams were really
creative. Everyone cheered for their hard work and talent. After the results
were announced, the winner was a dancing team from 5 Unggu. They
received their trophy joyfully from the head of co-curriculum, Mrs. Lee.

39| Everyone seemed very happy with the event and had a lot of
good words for it. I hope it will be the same next year.

Event like this was useful to all students as we learnt how to work as a
team with our group members. People who had singing and dancing talents
also got a chance to show what they could. 40|

I think learning from experience is extremely important. It helps us grow
as a person. We will remember it for the rest of our lives.
